1 Project 1 and Java Intro Sharma Chakravarthy Information Technology Laboratory (IT Lab) Computer Science and Engineering Department The University of Texas at Arlington, Arlington, TX sharma@cse.uta.edu Course Url: URL: Project 1 To familiarize with Editing, compiling, and executing a Java program To understand the structure of a Java program And how it is different from C or C++ Understand the creation of objects/instances Create classes and add a few methods Understand Java control structures Understand basic i/o in Java Use control structures in Java that are common to all programming languages 2 Project 1 (2) You have 2 weeks for this project (Due: 1/30/2014) No late submissions Submit on blackboard (see project description) Learn how to do UML diagram from this project Pay attention to correctness and robustness Make sure your output is clear and easy to check Understand given class/methods and follow them For project 2 also, we will give some code. Study the code given to you, understand, and use it as a model Java Control Structures As they are same or very similar to C and C++, we will not cover them Read chapters 4 and 5 from the book I will point out some differences, extensions that are specific to Java as we go along 3 4 1

2 Project 1 You are given two classes: Date and Time Date class represents and manipulates date Time class represents and manipulates time Using these two classes, you need to write a new class DateTime to handle both date and time as explained below. Project 1 (2) Using the date class, you can create any valid date or today s date It will handle leap years, correct days in a month etc. No negative dates You can print/output a date You can compare two dates You can check whether a date is before or after a date You can add days, months, years to a date 5 6 Project 1 (3) Project 1 (4) You can add or subtract two dates The same is true for the Time class implementation which handles up to a hundredth of a second What you need to implement: DateTime class , 12:30:00:00 is a DateTime I want to be able to add days, months, years, hours, mins, and seconds to it Use a 24 hour time format Be able to compare two DateTimes Print/output DateTime meaningfully Optionally, Add and subtract two DateTimes 7 8 2

3 Show some code Project 1 (5) Going from C to Java What data structures would you use if you have to do this in C? Can you use an array? Do you have to resort to malloc etc.? Let us figure out the corresponding data structures in Java? Java provides arrays that can expand/contract! Include libraries in the same way as C (name is different) NO object oriented feature is used! No variables, only a main method

5 Declaring the main Method public static void main( String[] args ) Starting point of every Java application. Parentheses after the identifier main indicate that it s a program building block called a method. Java class declarations normally contain one or more methods. main must be defined as shown; otherwise, the JVM will not execute the application. Methods perform tasks and can return information when they complete their tasks. Keyword void indicates that this method will not return any information. System.out object // System is the class //out is a static attribute Standard output object. Allows Java applications to display strings in the command window from which the Java application executes. System.out.println is a method Displays (or prints) a line of text in the command window. The string in the parentheses is the argument to the method. Positions the output cursor at the beginning of the next line in the command window. Most statements end with a semicolon. Comments // Fig. 2.1: Welcome1.java // indicates that the line is a comment. Used to document programs and improve their readability. Compiler ignores comments. A comment that begins with // is an end-of-line comment it terminates at the end of the line on which it appears. Traditional comment, can be spread over several lines as in /* This is a traditional comment. It can be split over multiple lines */ This type of comment begins with /* and ends with */. All text between the delimiters is ignored by the compiler. 5

6 Javadoc comments Delimited by /** and */. Note the difference All text between the Javadoc comment delimiters is ignored by the compiler. Enable you to embed program documentation directly in your programs. The javadoc utility program (Appendix M) reads Javadoc comments and uses them to prepare your program s documentation in HTML format. Class names By convention, begin with a capital letter and capitalize the first letter of each word they include (e.g., SampleClassName). A class name is an identifier a series of characters consisting of letters, digits, underscores (_) and dollar signs ($) that does not begin with a digit and does not contain spaces. Java is case sensitive uppercase and lowercase letters are distinct so a1 and A1 are different (but both valid) identifiers. 6

7 You may create more than one class in a file, but you may have only one public class per file When a java file has a public class, the name of the public class must be the same as the name of the file (without the.java extension) Compiling and Executing Your First Java Application Open a command window and change to the directory where the program is stored. Many operating systems use the command cd to change directories. To compile the program, type javac Welcome1.java If the program contains no syntax errors, preceding command creates a.class file (known as the class file) containing the platformindependent Java bytecodes that represent the application. When we use the java command to execute the application on a given platform, these bytecodes will be translated by the JVM into instructions that are understood by the underlying operating system. To execute the program, type java Welcome1. Launches the JVM, which loads the.class file for class Welcome1. Note that the.class file-name extension is omitted from the preceding command; otherwise, the JVM will not execute the program. The JVM calls method main to execute the program. 7

8 Class Welcome2, shown in Fig. 2.3, uses two statements to produce the same output as that shown in Fig New and key features in each code listing are highlighted. System.out s method print displays a string. Unlike println, print does not position the output cursor at the beginning of the next line in the command window. The next character the program displays will appear immediately after the last character that print displays. 8

9 System.out.printf method f means formatted displays formatted data Multiple method arguments are placed in a comma-separated list. Java allows large statements to be split over many lines. Cannot split a statement in the middle of an identifier or string. Method printf s first argument is a format string May consist of fixed text and format specifiers. Fixed text is output as it would be by print or println. Each format specifier is a placeholder for a value and specifies the type of data to output. Format specifiers begin with a percent sign (%) and are followed by a character that represents the data type. Format specifier %s is a placeholder for a string. 9

10 Javadoc As I indicated, it is a useful mechanism to produce documentation automatically by the system Very widely used in java Otherwise, reusability will be very difficult Show the date class to discuss what information need to be added to the.java file Also, show some java library example on the web tion/index html Object.html#constructor_summary UML diagrams Unified modeling language Is used for design of software consisting of objects/classes, methods, interfaces etc. Inheritance, composition, and aggregation can be represented Use cases can be defined We want you to start using UML (see the tutorial and url link on the course web page) For project 1, it is fairly straightforward as it has only two classes and an interface However, you will find it useful for subsequent projects What and how to submit 1. For all projects, you will submit the following files using the naming convention suggested given in the project description: 2. Each java file will contain one or more classes with appropriate name 3. A text file listing 3 logical errors encountered and the process used to debug and fix each of them. The file should be named as proj1_errors_firstname_lastname_section.txt 4. Include the total number of hours spent on the project as well in the above file 5. All the javadoc html files generated by javadoc in the same folder where the.java files are What and how to submit (2) 6. The UML diagram named as proj1_uml_firstname_lastname_section.ddd (Use appropriate extension in place of ddd depending on the tool used; only doc, ppt, and pdf are accepted) 7. A script file generated on Omega as described in the script file generator document 8. All of the above files should be placed in a single zipped folder named as: proj1_firstname_lastname_section_final 9. Your section is 2 (section to which you belong)

11 Useful suggestions If you get an error for javac command, java path information is not correct. Fix it Thank You! Similarly, for java command When you get a bunch of errors, fix the first error and compile again. Typically, a variable used without declaration will give an error for each occurrence of the variable. Choose an editor that you are comfortable with. You don t need to struggle with an editor Initially, sprinkle print statements meaningfully to help you debug. Don t put the same statement everywhere! 42 11
