1 Pipeline Pilot Web Port Support Guide April 2011 Contents Requirements 2 Requirements 2 Server 2 Client 2 Web Port Access 3 Authentication 5 Introduction Pipeline Pilot Web Port is a web-based application for running Pipeline Pilot protocols in Internet Explorer and Mozilla-based browsers, such as Firefox. Web Port users can view and execute protocols, inspect recent and running jobs, and retrieve results from completed jobs. This is especially useful when users need to run protocols from remote locations and cannot access a Pipeline Pilot client. Web Port users do not need to install any Pipeline Pilot software to perform these tasks from their web browsers Who Should Read this Guide This guide provides instructions for installing and administering Web Port. It provides details about software requirements and help for resolving server-related issues. It is intended to help system administrators who need to provide support for technical issues. Some tasks require system administrator privileges on the server. 2 Requirements Requirements Server The Web Port package is a separately installed package that needs to be installed on the server. Client Browser Internet Explorer 6, 7, or 8, or Mozilla Firefox 3.5 or 3.6. Chemistry Sketcher component Java Runtime Environment or later with One or more of the following molecule editors: Accelrys Draw, Symyx Draw, MDL Draw, or ISIS/Draw 2.4 or later ChemDraw 7.0 or later JDraw Sketcher component Java Runtime Environment or later with Discovery Studio Visualizer component Discovery Studio Visualizer Active X plugin, version 1.7 or later. ChemDraw Molecule (Deprecated) component ChemDraw plug-in (version 7, 8, or 9) ISIS/Draw Molecule (Deprecated) component Java Runtime Environment or later with Notes: ISIS/Draw 2.4 or later (to edit molecules) ChemDraw Molecule (Deprecated) and Discovery Studio Visualizer rely on Internet Explorer add-on functionality and are not supported in Firefox. When Web Port users visit a form that includes the Chemistry Sketcher applet, it prompts them to download Java, if it is not already installed. The applet points to the latest version of Java available at java.sun.com (the default). If you defined a local installer in the Administration Portal, users are prompted to download Java from the specified location on your server. To start Web Port: 1. Go to your Server Home Page or to the following URL: http://<servername>:<port>/webport/default/main.

The other command buttons in the upper-right corner allow you to access an open protocol s parameters and results (Protocol), view a list of protocol jobs run during previous Web Port sessions (Jobs), and view help for using Web Port (Help). For protocols that contain sensitive information (such as user names and passwords), Web Port can be accessed using SSL, ensuring that all data sent to and received from the server is encrypted. You can start a secure Web Port session by accessing Web Port using the secure port with the HTTPS protocol. For example: Authentication When authentication is enabled, users are prompted to enter a user name and password when they first sign into Web Port. Because it uses SSL, which encrypts passwords before sending them to the server, it is safe for users to enter their passwords. The browser caches a user s identity at login time and it is not necessary for users to log in a second time after closing their browsers. The cached credentials are valid for a length of time as configured in the Administration Portal s Server > Setup page (unless the user deletes cookies or logs out of Web Port). If authentication is disabled, users are prompted to enter a user name and password, but only their user names are required to access Web Port.
