2 Recommended Hardware and Software The Communication 2000 CD Study Guide supports both Windows and Macintosh formats. The minimum system requirements are below: Windows 166 MHz Pentium or compatible processor (Pentium II recommended) Windows 95, 98, or NT MB RAM SVGA video card 800 x 600 resolution; 16-bit color CD-ROM drive Internet access for online options Microsoft Word 6.0 or higher Adobe Acrobat Reader (available on the CD Study Guide or from Macintosh PowerPC processor, 80 MHz System 8 (or a more recent version) 32 MB RAM with virtual memory turned on Color monitor; 800 x 600 resolution; Thousands of colors CD-ROM drive Internet access for online options Microsoft Word 6.0 or higher Adobe Acrobat Reader (available on the CD Study Guide or from Videos You must have a media player to view the video files. - Windows: Use Windows Media Player in Internet Explorer or download Windows Media Player free from - Use Quicktime Player 4.0 or later. 3 Internet Access and Internet Browser You must have Internet access and an Internet browser (Netscape Navigator 4.0 or higher or Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher) to be able to use the CD Study Guide s online features. You can install a browser from this CD: 1. Open the Internet Browsers folder on the CD-ROM. 2. Select the browser you want to install: a. To install Netscape Navigator, open the folder Netscape Navigator Setup and double-click cc32e472.exe. b. To install Internet Explorer, open the folder Internet Explorer Setup and double-click ie5setup.exe. Install the CD Study Guide Follow these instructions to install the CD Study Guide on a non-networked computer. The instructions for installing the CD Study Guide on a network are in the Communication 2000 Network Administrator Guide (on the network/site license version of the CD Study Guide). You have three installation choices: - Install the entire program (Typical install; 175 MB). The default folder is C:\Program Files\C2000\Communication and Ethics. - Install the minimum files necessary to run the program from the CD-ROM (Compact install; 7 MB) - Select which files to install (Custom install): - Activities (Microsoft Word activity worksheets for each workshop) - Review (review questions for each workshop) - Video Clips (excerpts from the video segments) - HTML files (links to related Web sites) - Field Study (the Field Study Project at the end of the learner guide) - Applications (Third-party applications Microsoft Word Viewer 97 and Adobe Acrobat Reader are provided on the CD-ROM to help you view and launch the files. Macintosh users must have Microsoft Word 6.0 or higher installed.) Windows The first time you insert the CD Study Guide, the installation routine runs automatically. If the program does not start automatically, select Run from the Start menu. Type E:\c2000.exe and click OK (replace E with the letter of your CD-ROM drive). The install routine creates a shortcut icon for the CD Study Guide on your desktop. You can also run the program from the Start menu. Select Programs/Communication and Ethics. User Guide 3

4 Macintosh 1. Insert the CD Study Guide. The C2000 icon displays on the desktop. 2. Double-click the C2000 icon to display the files on the CD-ROM. 3. Double-click the Install C2000 icon. Uninstall the CD Study Guide Follow these instructions to remove the CD Study Guide from your computer. Windows On the Start menu, select Programs/Communication and Ethics/Remove Communication and Ethics. Macintosh Drag the Communication and Ethics folder into the trash. Log into the CD Study Guide You must log into the CD Study Guide with your first name, last name, and password. The fields are not case-sensitive; LeShaun, leshaun, and LESHAUN are treated as the same word. User Guide 4

5 Use the Main Menu After you log in, the program displays the main menu: Click Workshops to select the activities for a specific workshop. Click Video Case Studies to view the video excerpts for the module and answer multiplechoice questions about the videos. You can also view individual videos from the appropriate workshop menus. Click Web Links to view all the web links for the module. You can also view the web links for each workshop from the workshop menu. Click Field Study Project to view the field study for the module. Click Applications if you need to install Microsoft Word Viewer 97 or Adobe Acrobat Reader (Macintosh: Adobe Acrobat Reader only). Click Help to view this user guide. Click About for details about the CD Study Guide. Click Exit to close the CD Study Guide. User Guide 5

6 Use the Workshop Menus Each workshop has a menu of activities and resources that support the workshop content. Hold the mouse over a workshop number to see the title of the workshop. Click the workshop number to display its menu. The screen below shows the menu for Workshop 3, with the Activity Worksheets displayed. Workshops 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, and 9 have a Video Case Study that supplements the video segment for the workshop. Each case study contains a short video clip and five questions. The instructions for using the Video Case Studies start on the next page. Every workshop has Review Questions, a Word worksheet with the workshop review questions from the learner guide plus some additional questions. Every workshop has a Web Links page, a list of links related to the workshop content. The Web Links page opens in your browser so you can explore the sites that interest you. Most workshops also have Activity Worksheets. Most of these Word worksheets correspond to selected Practice and Project activities in the workshop. A CD-ROM icon in the learner guide indicates the activities that are on the CD Study Guide. Not all the activities are on the CD Study Guide, so there may be gaps in the menu. The menu above, for example, does not list worksheets for practice activities or the second project activity in Workshop 3. Several workshops also have extra activities for additional practice. 7 Use the Video Case Studies Each video case study includes an excerpt from the workshop video segment and a set of multiple-choice questions about the video. You can use the case studies from the main menu and from the appropriate workshop menus. (If you want to watch all the videos at the same time, or if you don t know which video you want to watch, select Video Case Studies on the main menu.) The program displays this screen when you select Video Case Studies on the main menu: Use these buttons to control the video. See below. Use this selector bar to select the video to view. Use the Back button to return to the main menu. Use this selector bar to answer the multiple-choice questions about the video. The first question displays automatically when the video ends. You can start answering the questions at any time by going to the end of the video. Restart Fast forward Rewind Play Pause Go to end User Guide 7

8 When you select a video from a workshop menu, the program displays the screen below. This screen does not have the video selector bar; you can only answer questions about the current video. Troubleshooting the Videos (Windows) If the videos do not display, check your monitor display properties. Right-click the desktop and select the Settings tab from the Display Properties dialog box. Color quality should be set to 16-bit or higher. User Guide 8

9 Answer the Video Questions When the video ends, the program displays the first video question automatically. (You can also skip the video and go directly to the first question by clicking the Go to End button.) Read the question and click on the answer (A, B, or C). The program evaluates your answer and displays feedback: The program records your answers to the questions. You can view the videos and your answers as many times as you want, but you cannot change your answers. If you want to answer the questions again, log in to the CD Study Guide with a different user name. User Guide 9
