Estuary Model MatLab Compiler Runtime for PCs 1. Start by downloading the 2 required files to the Desktop: a. Mat Lab Compiler Runtime installer b. Estuary Program 2. Click the actual MatLab Compiler Runtime installer and follow the on-screen instructions. 3. After the installer is finished, you can delete the MatLab Installer disk from the Desktop. 4. Click on the estuary program (estuary_dec_1.exe). A terminal will pop out and the graphical user interface will appear. 1
How to use the estuary model GUI for both Mac and PCs 1. Download all three input files (*.inp) to your desktop. 2. Click on Choose fresh water amount and a selection box will pop up. Navigate to your desktop or where the.inp files are located; select the one of the three files. They represent different amount of freshwater input to the river. (Note: if you cannot see them at first, try to choose file format type to be all files) 3. Enter a release day between in the first text box, hit return. (The return is important to assign the variable) 4. Enter a release location, a distance between 0 to -100 km, hit return. (the distance between starting and ending location can be any number >= 0 km i.e. you can release particle between -20 and -21 km from the mount of the estuary). 2
5. Click run, the cursor will turn into a cross hair, click on two locations to select the mooring location (vertical salinity profiles will be shown for these two locations) 6. The calculation will automatically start and can be paused by hitting pause. To restart, hit resume. 7. To change the variable at the end of each run, assuming you are not changing the amount of freshwater, just repeat step 3 5 and hit run. Or else repeat step 2-5. (Note you can hide the both or one of the bottom two graphs by selecting the 3 bottoms on the lower right hand corner. They show the vertically integrated number of particles and the vertical salinity profiles). 3
Estuary Model MatLab Compiler Runtime for Mac 1. Start by downloading the 3 required files to the Desktop: a. Mat Lab Compiler Runtime installer b. Estuary Program c. Estuary start-up script 2. Open the MatLab Compiler Runtime installer. 4
3. Click the actual MatLab Compiler Runtime installer and follow the on-screen instructions. 4. After the installer is finished, you can eject the MatLab Installer disk from the Desktop. Or simply drag it to the trash. 5. Open the Mac Terminal application from your computers Utilities folder. (Tip: Click a blank space on the desktop and press Shift + + U to open Utilities) 5
6. The following picture has multiple commands explained below: **DO NOT INCLUDE QUOTATION MARKS IN COMMANDS a. Command 1 change directories by typing cd ~/Desktop b. Command 2 type chmod 777 *Est*, this makes the Estuary files executable or else the program will not work. c. Command 2 type ls al, this just lists the files on the Desktop. Ensure that the first column in the lines that contain Estuary_complie_oct14_mac and run_estuary_compile_oct14_mac.sh begins with rwxrwxrwx d. Command 3 type sh run_estuary_compile_oct14_mac /Applications/MATLAB/MATLAB_Complier_Runtime/v710, this runs the Estuary application and sets the correct environmental variables required to run. 7. The X11 application should be started automatically. 6
8. The Estuary application will run in a X11 window. 9. When you are finished, simply close the X11 window and you will be returned to the Terminal. Type, exit if you are finished or press the Up arrow to run it again. Closing Terminal while you are using the Estuary application will crash the program. 7
