1 Table of Contents [TOC]: Introduction Getting Started Installation Overview Using the Softphone System Requirements Introduction: Valley City State University is deploying Cisco s AnyConnect Virtual Private Network (VPN) client to permit authorized university users of Cisco s Unified Personal Communicator (CUPC) software or Softphone remote access to the campus telephony system. When the VPN client is successfully installed on your computer and actively connected to the internet, your Softphone can attach to the VCSU campus phone system from an off-campus location. The speed of your computers internet connection will affect the Softphone s response and determine which features will be most useful (e.g. placing a video call on a slow connection may be difficult). [TOC] Getting Started: The AnyConnect VPN client is available to VCSU Windows and Macintosh computer users. For specific operating system and hardware requirements see the System Requirements section below. You cannot properly install the VPN client while your computer is attached, on campus, to the VCSU Secure or Guest campus networks. The ITC Help Desk in room 119 of the Rhoades Science Center building is providing a few ports for wired connectivity to a network that permits the installation of the client and can assist you with the installation during normal Help Desk work hours. As with most software download installations, your experience will vary depending on the speed of your network connection, your operating system, choice of internet browser, virus protection software, Java version, and firewall settings, as well as the possible presence of malware and other applications that may interfere. We suggest you close all running programs other than the internet browser you will use. [TOC] Installation Overview: In general, the installation process is similar on a PC or a Mac. It is essential that you have access to administrator privileges on the computer. All authorized users of laptops provided by VCSU were assigned administrator rights to their computer. Insure that you computer is connected to the internet. Depending on the configuration of your computer, the VPN installer may prompt you to accept/trust Security Certificates, give permission to install ActiveX and/or Sun Java components, or prompt you to allow the next phase of the installation process. Using your internet browser, go to this secure site: Login using your VCSU account credentials (Blackboard Portal/VCSU username and password). 2 When you have successfully navigated through the installation process on a Windows computer, the browser should look like this. Note: The connection can be controlled from the tray icon If you double-click the tray icon, the connection management dialog box will appear. If you right-click the tray icon, a pop-up menu will appear with the options to Open AnyConnect, Connect/Disconnect, or Quit. Depending on the state of the connection the dialog box will look similar to one of these. [TOC] Version 1/19/2010 P a g e 2

3 When you have successfully navigated through the installation process on an Intel Mac OS X computer, the browser should look like this. Note: The connection can be controlled from the lock icon in your menu bar If you click on the menu bar lock icon, the drop down menu give you options to Bring AnyConnect to the Front, Connect/Disconnect, or Quit. 4 Using the Softphone: To successfully use the VCSU Cisco Softphone from an off-campus location: Insure your computer is connected to the internet. Insure the Cisco Softphone application is closed. Go to the File pull down menu and select Exit, if necessary. Launch the AnyConnect VPN application. Tip: You should always be able to find the AnyConnect VPN client program in a folder labeled Cisco in the All Programs or Programs menu on a Windows computer and the Applications menu in Finder on an OS X Mac. Using the AnyConnect VPN client, Connect to ra.vcsu.edu by logging in to the VCSU group using your VCSU username and password. Tip: When successfully connected the lock icon the menu bar on an OS X Mac. will appear in the system tray on a Windows machine or Launch the Cisco Softphone application. Insure the Login Server name is presence.vcsu.edu, and then login. 5 System Requirements: Microsoft Windows For WebLaunch, use Internet Explorer 6.0+ or Firefox 2.0+, and enable ActiveX or install Sun JRE Windows Versions Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) AnyConnect requires a clean install if you upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. If you upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7, manually uninstall AnyConnect first, then after the upgrade, reinstall it manually or by establishing a web-based connection to a security appliance configured to install it. Uninstalling before the upgrade and reinstalling AnyConnect afterwards is necessary because the upgrade does not preserve the Cisco AnyConnect Virtual Adapter. Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) SP2 or Vista Service Pack 1 with KB AnyConnect requires a clean install if you upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista. Windows XP SP2 and SP3. Windows Requirements Pentium class processor or greater. x64 or x86 processors. 5 MB hard disk space. RAM: 256 MB for Windows XP. 512 MB for Windows Vista. 512 MB for Windows 7. Microsoft Installer, version 3.1. Mac OS AnyConnect 2.4 supports the following versions of Mac OS: Mac OS X 10.5 Mac OS X 10.6 and (both 32-bit and 64-bit). AnyConnect requires 50MB of hard disk space. AnyConnect does not support virtualization software such as VMWare for any platform or Parallels Desktop for Mac OS. AnyConnect 2.4 running over VMware or Microsoft Virtual PC on Windows 7 is not 100% reliable, but initial testing suggests the results are usually favorable. AnyConnect does not support sessions with a security appliance running on the same subnet as the endpoint. [TOC] Version 1/19/2010 P a g e 5
