Sounds of the Delta Kontakt instrument. INDEX 1...How to Install/Load presets. 2...Overview of instrument. 3...Sequencer 4...Effects section and controls. 5...Credits.
Thank you for buying our latest Kontakt instrument. Sounds of the Delta is based on the Korg Delta analogue synthesiser, and will enable you to create many of the analogue tones of the Delta. To install is easy. Simply unzip the zip file called Sounds of the Delta to an area on your computers hard drive. If you have a specific drive which you use to store audio, then it is usually best practice to use that drive. Please note: It is really important that none of the files contained within the folder Sounds of the Delta are moved around to other locations; they have to stay where I have placed them. If the files are moved around it could cause a file not found dialogue when loading Sounds of the Delta. Loading a preset. To load a preset, click the Browse folder icon on the top row of Kontakt - This will open up the Browser window to the left left of the main Kontakt screen. You will see the various tabs called Files, Libraries, Database, Monitor, Modules and Auto. Select the Files tab and then navigate to the Presets folder inside the Sounds of the Delta folder which is now on your computers hard drive. Click into one of the folders (in the image below I have clicked Abstract drones) and you will now see the list of presets displayed in the bottom file browser window.
Now all you have to do is double click one of the presets and this will load the preset into Kontakt. Once you have a preset loaded you can load the next preset by simply clicking the left and right arrow head pointers in the Kontakt window. (See image below) To select another preset from another folder such as strings, you would click on the strings folder and this will display the selection of presets in that folder. Again, just double click a preset and it will load into Kontakt. Overview of Instrument. Sounds of the Delta consists of 3 seperate synth parts, a sequencer and a effects/control section. 1...The Presets section 2...The Raw oscillator section. 3...The Strings section. The Presets section contains a sample library of sounds made with a real Korg Delta. To select a new waveform simply click into the preset waveform box and scroll to the sample you wish to use, or use the grey up/down arrows
Each synth section of this instrument has 3 sets of ADSR envelopes for amp, filter and pitch. These operate in much the same way as conventional ADSR envelopes. We added extra envelopes for Pitch and Filter which are not found on the real Delta - This allows for sounds to be made that could not be made on a real, Delta. Filter ADSR and pitch ADSR have the ability to be negative or positive using the amount dial to set this. You will also notice each synth section has 3 LFO's - Primary LFO which can be set to modulate Amp, Pitch and Filter. The primary LFO can either be free flowing or retriggered everytime you press a key. To set the lfo to retrigger simply click the RETRIG button to illuminate it. The Secondary LFO is connected to filter cutoff and resonance and each have their own seperate controls for setting speed and depth. The bypass button is used to switch off the synth section. Preset, Raw and Strings each have their own bypass button. When this button is illuminated (yellow) the section is switched off. This is important, because it allows the sections that are not in use for a particular preset, to be switched off and this saves voice count - which reduces cpu. If a section is not in use, do not just turn the volume down, because this will keep the voices activated - It is more efficient to press bypass when the section is not in use.
Raw Osc Page. This is similar in operation to the Preset page, except the oscillators are activated by pushing the 16', 8', 4', 2', and white noise dials upwards. These are the raw oscillators from a real Delta synth. If the dials are set to the downmost position, they will switch off the voice for that OSC. Why is this important? Imagine you have a ADSR setting with a long release time, and you have all 4 osc's activated and white noise. This setup alone, would produce 5 voices if a single note was pressed. Now imagine you play a simple triad chord - this would now be 3 sets of 5 voices equaling 15 voices for one triad. Now if you play a second triad, there would now be 30 voices playing - 15 new voices and 15 old voices fading away with a long release. Play some more chords and you can easily see the number of voices increasing, to high amounts. Combine this with voices running from the preset section and the strings section and you can easilly cause a lot of cpu usage. I have included all the synth sections together in one instrument, but care should be taken when creating patches because if all voices are running in combination with lots of LFO's etc, you can devour cpu, in Kontakt. Use the signal generators at various volumes to create various oscillator tones, and then use the filters to further modify the sound. Pulling the slider to its bottom position will switch that voice off.
The Strings section. This section recreates the analogue string sounds of the Delta synthesiser. Note the inclusion of the blend dial - This sets the balance of 16' and 8 ' strings. Use the EQ section to set the tones.
The Sequencer. The sequencer can sequence note, filter cutoff and resonance on each of the 16 steps. The sequencer can run in two modes - manual mode (not synced to master DAW) and host sync mode which will clock to your master sequencer such as Cubase, Logic etc. To activate the sequencer in manual mode simply press the sequencer button so the button lights. The sequencer will now sweep from left to right(check sequencer lenghth is more than 1) To change notes simply click on the notes and select the required note from the menu.
It is also possible to alter filter cutoff and resonance for each step of the sequence. To activate the sequencing of filter cutoff and resonance, simply press the filter button to on. The yellow bars indicate the positions of the cutoff and resonance controls. To adjust them click on one of them and hold the mouse button whilst scrolling up and down. Also, note the random buttons - These create random patterns which can often be a good source of inspiration. The Green keys are used to alter the start position of the sequencer, as the sequencer is playing. There are 16 green keys (1 for each of the 16 steps). For example: If you press green key 5, the sequencer will jolt to step 5 and restart from step 5. Note it is best to have sequencer length set to 16, to allow the full range of start positions to be used. It is possible, if your timing is not on the beat of a bar, to make the sequencer lose sync with your DAW, so care should be taken with your timing, when jolting the restart of the sequencer. Having said that, it is possible to use this, to create new feels and grooves with existing patterns. The next three controls are RATE, SPEED and LENGTH. Rate is used only if the sequencer is not in manual mode and is being synced to your master sequencer such as Cubase. A setting of 1/16, 1/8 or 1/4 will step the sequencer in 16th, 8th or quarter, respectively. Length is used to set the length of the sequence. I find a length of 04 or 08 good for high energy bass lines and sequences.(think Donna Summer- I feel love ) :) Sequencer Speed is used only when running the sequencer in standalone mode(not synced from host).
Storing patterns. Ok, so you have created a killer pattern and want to be able to save it for recall and to allow you to move on to making a new pattern to go with your new hit. To store a pattern is really simple - Just press one of the seven buttons under WRITE TO MEMORY and the button will light (yellow) and then return to off - Thats it! Pattern saved :) So, if you store your pattern in 1 and now you want to recall your pattern just press PLAY FROM MEMORY button 1. You may ask, what happens if I want to automate the selection of patterns to select the patterns in various stages of my track that is running in Cubase etc? To do this you create a midi track connected to the instance of Kontakt that is running Sounds of the Delta, you can then place notes from E7 to A#7. This will then select patterns from 1 to 7 ( E7 triggering pattern 1 and A#7 triggering pattern 7). Keys on the Kontakt keyboard are coloured RED to show which keys select patterns. So, by placing notes E7 to A#7 in various stages of your track in your DAW (Cubase etc) you will be able to change patterns at specific points in your musical arrangement in your master sequencer such as Cubase. Running sequencer in Sync mode. To sync the sequencer to your master sequencer is easy. 1) Press host sync so it illuminates (Yellow) 2) Press sequencer to on. Sequencer is now prepped and is waiting for you to start your master sequencer. Please note the red keys from -C2 (minus C2) to -C1 (very bottom octave). These notes will allow for you to transpose any sequence that is running to a new key. For example. If you have a sequence in the key of C and you press -F2(minus F2), the sequence will transpose to F. This will allow you to place midi notes at various positions in your master track running in Cubase/Logic etc to make the sequencer follow any key changes your song may have. Important Note. Only sequences in the range of C1 to C5 can be transposed. Why? This is because the samples range from C1 to C6. If you have a sequence that uses samples in the 5th octave (D5 for example) and then you transpose up 12 notes, the sequencer will try to play note D6 which obviously does not exist (this instrument has a key range from C1 to C6). It is also possible to save your patterns to a file. These patterns can then be loaded into any of the 7 memory locations. Once the pattern is loaded in you can then use the pattern write to store the pattern in memory.
Effects and Controls. To activate any of the effects, click on the effects on button for the specific effect you wish to activate. The reverb is a convolution type and you can load in new reverbs from the list in the drop down reverb menu.
Controls. Use these controls to set various amounts of modulation from Aftertouch, Mod Wheel and velocity. You can also set the panning for each of the raw OSC's, Preset library and strings. To set aftertouch to control the amount of PRIMARY LFO modulation to pitch you will first switch the Primary LFO PITCH to on. You can adjust the amount of effect aftertouch has on the primary pitch lfo by adjusting the aftertouch dials. For example: If you want the strings section to have it's pitch modulated by LFO and controlled by aftertouch you would go to the strings page, click the pitch button to on and then adjust the speed and depth of the LFO to your liking. You could then adjust the strings aftertouch to primary lfo and apply aftertouch from your master keyboard. If the depth of the primary lfo is set to 0 then lfo modulation will be applied only when you apply aftertouch from your master keyboard. If you have the the depth dial on the primary LFO set to apply modulation then any aftertouch applied will be added to the existing modulation. You can use this to intesify the existing modulation with aftertouch. Aftertouch to filter. These dials set the amount of aftertouch to filter cutoff. If filter cutoff is set to max in the synth sections you may hear very little effect. Best effects are achieved when filter cutoff is set below max postion and then controlled by aftertouch to modulate the filter cutoff. Mod wheel to filter. These dials set the amount of Modwheel to filter cutoff. If filter cutoff is set to max in the synth sections you may hear very little effect.
Pitch bend and velocity dial. The pitch bend dial sets the amount of pitch bend applied when using the pitch bend on your master keyboard. Velocity sets the amount of effect velocity has on volume. If set to full volume, velocity from your keyboad has no effect on volume. Mono Mode and Glide Please see the new dials in the effects/control page. Mono Mode button will place the Delta in a Mono mode when button is switched on. Note priority determines the priority of any new note when an old note is still active. Portamento. Off/On/Auto. On position activates the portamento and notes will glide from one note position to another note position regardless of playing style. Auto will only engage glide between notes when playing a new note with the old note held. Relative Glide will not apply full glide time to every note, instead the amount of glide will be relative to the distance of each new note being played.
