Customizing FlipCharts Promethean Module 2 (ActivInspire) Section 1: Browsers The browsers (located on the left side of the flipchart) are menus for various functions. To view the browsers, click Main Menu > View > Browsers. The right side of the Title Bar contains the docking buttons. The first button, on the right, indicates on what portion of the screen the browser will open. The push-pin button allows the option of pinning the browser in place or hiding the browser when working on the flipchart itself. (To bring the browser window back, scroll the mouse to the far left side of the screen). Docking Close Page The Menu bar underneath the Title Bar opens the different browser windows. The pictures toward the bottom of the browser are thumbnails of pages, objects, or actions. To select, click and drag the desired choice over to the flipchart screen. The size of the thumbnails can be adjusted to show more (and smaller) thumbnails or larger (and fewer) thumbnails. Click and drag the slider bar at the bottom right of the browser window to adjust the thumbnail sizes. Section 2: Page Browser The Page Browser allows the user to move, organize, edit, and open pages in the flipchart. Right-clicking on any thumbnail page will open the Page Edit menu. This menu allows the user to cut, copy, duplicate, paste, or delete any page; insert a new page anywhere in the flipchart; insert and edit backgrounds and gridlines; export the page as its own document, or copy it to the Resource Library; or add and edit questions using ActivExpressions (module 6). To change the order of a page, click and drag its thumbnail to the desired location (remember to use the thumbnail slider bar if the desired location is not visible). Tulsa Public Schools: Promethean Module 2 Page 1 of 8 1/28/2010

Section 3: Notes Browser When using a flipchart made by another teacher, it is helpful to have notes on how the lesson is taught. Notes are attached to individual pages, and their presence is indicated by a note icon in the upper right hand portion of the screen (see example at right). Click on the icon and the Note Browser opens, revealing the flipchart creator's instructions. Section 4: Resource Browser The Resource Browser allows the user to open, utilize, and edit the Resource Library. My Resources Shared Resources Other Resources Enter Search terms Path to where your resources are Select a different folder for Search the Web for resources Resource Categories From the Shared area Search Options Begin Search Rubberstamp These are templates from the Brick Category Resource Library Settings Tulsa Public Schools: Promethean Module 2 Page 2 of 8 1/28/2010

There are two categories for resources. Shared Resources are stored on the computer but are available to all users of the computer. My Resources are only available to the user currently logged in. Since the My Resources section begins empty, users have found it helpful to copy frequently used items here (less items to look through; module 4) To find an item, (annotation, object, grid, or background) conduct a search or navigate through the folder menu. Choose to search through My Resources, Shared Resources, Other Resources (different locations on the computer, such as the desktop), or the Web (goes to Promethean Planet), and begin the search. To insert the item into the flipchart, click and drag it onto the flipchart page. The item can be edited on the page. The Rubberstamp allows the user to make multiple copies easily. Click the rubberstamp button, click the selected item and then click anywhere on the page multiple times. Each click will insert a new object onto the page. The Resource Library Settings button contains options for viewing the library objects. View Mode shows the objects as either pictures (thumbnails) or words (list). Thumbnail Size adjusts the size of the thumbnails. Image Transparency controls whether the white background around the object is invisible or not (the default is for invisibility, and is usually preferred). Section 5: Manipulate Objects and Annotations To manipulate an object or annotation, click the select tool and click once on the item. The Object Edit Box will appear. Translucency: Shape above can be made to show shape beneath the picture. Group: Shapes can be grouped together to stop them breaking apart when moved. Bring object forward or Send backward One shape can be above or below another in the common layer. See notes on layers Properties Duplicate: Copy Move Access Points Allows you to deform the shape Rotate Make object bigger or smaller Resize Resize Resize both horizontal and vertical Tulsa Will Public distort Schools: if not careful Promethean Module 2 Page 3 of 8 1/28/2010 Resize maintains aspect ratio Gets smaller or larger without distortion

To move the object (or annotation; it works for both), click and drag on the four-way arrow. If the Object Edit Toolbar is not opened first, it is possible to click and drag directly on the object. The four directional arrows indicates that the Select Tool is in Move mode. To resize the object, click and drag on one of the silver circles, or click on the green star buttons located on the toolbar. Keeping the object in its original perspective and ratio can only be guaranteed by using the "green star" buttons or the silver circle located on the bottom right corner of the object. The Grouping button is useful for moving several objects at once and keeping them it the same relative positions. To group objects, click and drag a box around the desired items then click the "Grouping" button. Objects may also be ungrouped by clicking on any one of the items and clicking the "Grouping" button The Properties command opens a new menu with more options. Commands include cut, copy, paste, duplicate, and delete; transform (size, mirror, flip, and alignment); reorder or assign to another layer; lock it in place, hide it, or drag a copy; attach a link or action; edit the properties; or manipulate the points of the shape. To enable "Drag a copy," click "Properties > Drag A Copy." Now, when the mouse is scrolled over the object, a plus sign appears next to the cursor. Click and drag to another part of the page and a copy of the object appears. This can be done continuously (excellent for exercises using money). To disable, click "Properties > Drag A Copy" again. Section 6: Objects, Annotations, Backgrounds, and Grids Items on the flipchart can cover or be covered by other items. The default setting is more recent additions on top; older items appear at the bottom (called order. ) However, they are also organized by what kind of items they are, referred to as Layers. The layer of items influences not only the order in which they appear, but also the way they can be edited. Top Middle Bottom Background The top layer contains annotations (generally anything done with the pen, eraser, or magic Ink). Annotations generally appear on top of everything else, and only annotations can be erased. Annotations can be moved and manipulated. The middle layer contains objects (pictures, clipart, shapes, and typed text). Objects appear underneath annotations but above gridlines and backgrounds. Objects can be moved and manipulated. The bottom layer does not contain anything unless you put it there. Objects in the bottom layer can still be manipulated and moved. Tulsa Public Schools: Promethean Module 2 Page 4 of 8 1/28/2010

Underneath it all is the background. The background layer contains Backgrounds and Grids. This layer cannot be moved, although it can be edited (right-click on the screen and select Set Background or Grid Designer. This will be covered more in module 5. To remove the background, click the clear button on the Main Toolbox and select Clear Background or Clear Grid. Section 7: The Clear Tool To clear all lines, words, and shapes drawn on the page with the pen, click the spray bottle button on the Main Toolbar click Clear Annotations. Clear Objects will remove pictures, clipart, and text from the page. Clear Grids will remove grid lines, Clear Background will remove the background, and Clear Page will remove everything from the page. Section 8: Tools ActivInspire has many tools that don't appear on the Main Toolbar. To access extra tools, click the Tools button on the Main Toolbar or click Main Menu > Tools. The menu includes a More Tools button at the bottom. It includes the Ticker-tape, the Clock, Dice, Rulers, Protractors, and the Camera. Many of the tools will be reviewed in module 4, but not all. (There are too many!) The Revealer Tool allows users to hide parts of the screen and reveal them later. Click Tools > Revealer and the screen goes black (with a light white x. ) Move the mouse to any edge of the screen and a handle appears. Click and drag the handle towards the center to reveal the screen. Once the handle is pulled in one direction, it will only move in that direction (the white x will disappear), until the screen is covered again and the white x reappears. To close the Revealer, click Tools > Revealer again. The Spotlight tool is similar to the Revealer. It blacks out the screen except for a spotlight, which can be moved, resized, and reshaped. Activate by clicking Tools > Spotlight and choosing a shape. Click and drag anywhere just outside the circle to move it around the screen. Click and drag on the circle outline to alter or resize it. Click on the small white square to choose a different shape or to take a snapshot of the circle. To close the Spotlight, click Tools > Spotlight again. Tulsa Public Schools: Promethean Module 2 Page 5 of 8 1/28/2010

Section 9: Profiles Profiles are preset customized views and toolbars. With one click you can bring up all your favorite tools or only show the ones you want your students to use. You can create your own profile or use the pre-made profiles. The At the Board profile will not display the Browser windows or the Windows task bar at the bottom of the screen but will display the Main Toolbox. The Authoring profile displays the standard tools and browser windows. The Language Arts and Mathematics profiles include extra tools on the Main Toolbox, such as Handwriting-to-Text Recognition (Language Arts) or rulers and protractors (Mathematics). The Media profile includes tools such as the Sound Recorder and the Camera. The profiles can be edited by clicking Main Menu > Edit > Profiles > Commands. Select a profile to edit, and then add commands from the list on the left to the toolbar on the right. To save the changes, click the Save button at the top right (circled). To create a personal profile, click Save As. Clicking the red x will delete the profile, while clicking the red circle will reset the profile to its last saved setting. changes) The Layout Tab allows the user to customize the look of the Main Toolbar. Options include the size of the icons, the number of colors in the color palette, the docking locations and properties of toolbars and windows, and full screen and trashcan options. (Remember to choose the profile for set of Tulsa Public Schools: Promethean Module 2 Page 6 of 8 1/28/2010

Section 10: Promethean Planet Lessons Promethean Planet has thousands of pre-made flipchart lessons. They are accessed through the internet at Only members can access the lessons, but membership is free. Once logged in and the home page is reached, click Resources > Lesson Plans on the sites top toolbar. In the same location a search toolbar will appear. Enter a keyword, subject and grade level. Choose Lessons and click the Search button. Tulsa Public Schools: Promethean Module 2 Page 7 of 8 1/28/2010

A list of flipchart lessons will appear. Scroll the mouse over the icons to read more details, such as grade-levels and number of times downloaded. Many times there will be several pages of lessons. Click on an icon to preview the lesson. The preview will slowly display all the pages of the flipchart, although they cannot be manipulated. To download the lesson, click the Download text to the bottom left. Choose a location and save it to the computer. Tulsa Public Schools: Promethean Module 2 Page 8 of 8 1/28/2010
