1 Making a Sackville Coastal Flood Map Demo covers: Accessing and previewing map templates Modifying map elements such as titles, data frames, legends & scale bars Drawing a graphic on a map Adding text to a map Adding an inset map Preparing a map for printing Log in and Look Inside the Folder Marked M: You ll see a number of files in this folder, one called SackvilleGISDay.gdb and another called viewer.mxd. Double click on the file called viewer.mxd and wait for the program ArcGIS load the basemap we ll use to begin. Explore the Basemap What you re looking at is a satellite image of Sackville and the Tantramar area in south east New Brunswick. This image was gathered by the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of the Sentinel-2 project. At the small scale you re looking at to start, you ll see the

2 Add a Map Layer Click the add layer symbol in the main menu and navigate into the SackvilleGISDay.gdb geodatabase if you aren t already situated inside this geodatabase. Look for a layer called SK_Buildings, highlight the name of this layer, and choose Add. You may have to zoom in to see the shapes of the building footprints as they re quite small at the scale of the entire satellite image you can do this by turning the mousewheel or selecting a different map scale from the pulldown on the main menu. You can also control the way the building symbols are represented. For instance, if you right click on the name of the SK_Buildings in the table of contents window pane to the left, you can click on the colored symbol and change the color of the buildings to orange, as we have done (see below).

3 Place a marker and label on the map Right click on toolbar, check the Draw toolbar from the list. On the Draw toolbar click the dropdown arrow beside the rectangle and select the Marker draw tool Click on the map the location you want to place your marker. To change the style of the marker right click on it and select properties. Your map at this point might look something like this

4 Add the 9.0m and 9.9m Coastal Flood Layers Click the add layer symbol in the main menu and navigate into the SackvilleGISDay.gdb geodatabase if you aren t already situated inside this geodatabase. Look for a layer called T_floodextent_90, highlight the name of this layer, and choose Add. If you want, you can make this a blue color by clicking on the color symbol associated with the flood extent layer in the table of contents window to the left. Repeat this process and add the other layer called T_floodextent_99. You may have to zoom in to see the shapes of the building footprints as they re quite small at the scale of the entire satellite image you can do this by turning the mousewheel or selecting a different map scale from the pulldown on the main menu. Also: at any point, you can click on the pan tool (looks like a hand) which will allow you to drag the map and view different portions of the Sackville/Tantramar area.

5 Create the map layout In the lower left hand corner of the map view toggle the button from Data View to Layout View On the layout toolbar select the change layout button to select from a list of predefined templates. In the Select Template window select the Traditional Layouts tab and select the LandscapeClassic.mxd The layout toolbar can be used to zoom in/out and pan the page. This toolbar should not be confused with the Tools toolbar used to zoom in/out and pan the data. Double click on the title bar to create your own title. Other text boxes can either be modified or deleted. The position and style of the north arrow and the scale bar can be adjusted. Add a label to the marker we created by selecting the Text button on the Draw toolbar Add an Scale Bar From the menu bar select Insert -> Scale Bar. Choose a scale bar format that you feel works best for your map and click OK to add it to your map. NOTE: you can reposition and resize your scale bar at any point.

6 From here you can add other elements, such as legends, using the Insert menu. If you have spatial data you would like to add to the map you can do that at any point using the Add Data button.
