4 1 Introduction This document provides a summary of all new features, product enhancements, and bug fixes made in the Sherlock version 6.1 release. Any known issues found prior to release will be listed in this document. This document is located in the top-level installation directory of Sherlock and is accessible from the Help -> Release Notes menu in the Sherlock software. 1.1 Version 6 Release History Version 6.0 released July 24, Version released August 30, Version released September 18, Version 6.1 released December 27, Known Issues 2.1 ANSYS Workbench Integration When importing a step file from Sherlock into ANSYS Workbench version 19.1 and later, the imported geometry does not name parts correctly when going directly from Workbench to Mechanical. After importing a geometry into Workbench, first go into ANSYS DesignModeler and generate the geometry before going into Mechanical. 2.2 High-DPI Displays When running Sherlock on PC's with high-dpi devices, the appearance of certain graphical user interface elements may not appear correct, such as font sizes. In order to correct the appearance on these displays, the Java application properties need to be adjusted. See the section on Common Installation and Startup Problems for more information.

5 3 New Features 3.1 Meshed Parts Meshed parts may now be used with sub-assemblies in Sherlock to create and analyze multi-card chassis models. In such models, a custom meshed mechanical part can be defined in any 3D design tool, such as SolidWorks, to represent the chassis to be analyzed. The chassis mesh model can then be imported into Sherlock and bonded to one or more boards as needed. Please see the FEA-15 - Meshed Parts user guide section for more information. 3.2 Locked Project Models Sherlock now provides the ability to export a project as a Locked Project Model. This type of Sherlock export removes details related to circuit card design including the design files, stackup, and parts list from being viewable in the project. When a Locked Project Model is imported into Sherlock only analysis may be run and life cycle changes made. Results generated from running analysis will not include 3D models or results. Please refer to the Project Management user guide section for more information. 3.3 Thermal Mechanical BGA Update Thermal Mechanical analysis has been updated to provide a life prediction for BGA components when ball modeling is enabled. This is supported for SAC305 and 63SN37PB ball materials only. For all other components and BGA's without ball modeling enabled, the prior scoring is used and does not include a life prediction. The Thermal Mechanical analysis process has been updated to perform a heat transfer analysis following by a static analysis from the reference temperature to the minimum and maximum temperatures defined by the thermal cycle in temperature increments specified when running the analysis. Thermal Mechanical analysis is only supported with the Calculix FEA engine. When running this analysis, Sherlock will automatically use this engine regardless of the FEA analysis settings. Please refer to the Thermal Mech Analysis user guide section for more information.

6 4 General Enhancements 4.1 Abaqus Support Updated Sherlock to automatically support Abaqus 2016 and later when performing harmonic or random vibration analysis from within Sherlock. The manual work-around documented in version for these versions of Abaqus is no longer needed. 4.2 ANSYS Workbench Integration Updated the ANSYS Workbench integration so that when the exported Workbench journal scripts are unable to find the associated STEP geometry file, the script will display a file open dialog to allow the user to select the correct STEP geometry file. The script has also been updated so that even if the STEP geometry file cannot be found, the material property import will still proceed. The Sherlock ANSYS Workbench Plugin has been removed. ANSYS Workbench Integration is now performed with the ANSYS Workbench Integration process. See the FEA-20 ANSYS Workbench Integration user guide section for more information. 4.3 Component Failure Mechanism Analysis The Component Failure Mode Analysis module has been renamed to Component Failure Mechanism Analysis. Updated the Component Failure Mechanism Analysis module to support ceramic capacitors. Parts with the part type CAPACITOR CERAMIC will have ceramic capacitor wearout performed. The required inputs for this analysis are listed in the Component Failure Analysis user guide. 4.4 FEA Model Export When exporting a FEA model which contains material definitions with undefined thermal conductivity values, a warning will be displayed on the console, similar to what is already in place when running FEA analysis. Exported FEA models, FEA models used for analysis, and generated 3D models now include comments in the file which show all the model settings used to generate a given model as a reference. 4.5 File Import When importing ODB++ archives, Sherlock now uses the ".copper_weight" and ".layer_dielectric" values to set the layer thickness values instead of assigning default thickness to the Stackup. Users may disable this assignment and revert to the Sherlock computed values by setting the Assign Stackup Thickness property to NO when importing the archive. Add support for a file type Outline (CSV, Excel). The format of this file is two columns with header rows for the X location and Y location of the points that denote a valid board outline. The points are processed in order in which they are defined. If the last point is not the same as the first point, Sherlock will close the polygon automatically back to the starting point.

7 4.6 Heat Sinks The heat sink editor now displays the estimated weight of the selected heat sink when editing heat sink properties. 4.7 ICT Analysis The ICT analysis module has been updated to provide life predictions based on strain rate. The ICT results now include a fatigue-based score in addition to the already existing overstress score. The overstress score algorithm has been updated in version Laminate Glass Style Added more than six hundred additional laminate glass styles which may be used in the Stackup editor for laminate layers. Most of the previously existing glass style construction names have been modified. The old names are still backward compatible however the new names appear in the Stackup. Added a new column to the Stackup table which displays the laminate construction values for laminate layers. For laminate construction, the default naming is changed from DEFAULT to DEFAULT (2116). 4.9 Layer Viewer The Layer Viewer tree has been modified so a single left mouse click will expand or collapse a selected folder instead of requiring a double-click. Expanding or collapsing a folder no longer automatically selects and deselects the layers for that folder. The state of the selected items will be preserved. A right-click menu has been added to each of the folders in the tree which allow for all items to be selected or deselected, along with options to expand or collapse the selected folder Mechanical Parts The mechanical part editor now displays the estimated weight of the selected mechanical part when editing extruded mechanical parts Mechanical Shock Analysis In the Shock Profile editor, the HalfSine shock pulse shape has been corrected and the curve that was called HalfSine has been renamed to Haversine Mount Points and Fixtures Mount point strain for mount points and ICT fixtures defined as mount pads or standoffs is now included when running FEA analysis. The strain for each mount point or fixture will appear in a separate result table named Mount Points for each analysis type. Allow mount points to be copied as ICT fixtures in fixture editor. When one or more mount points are selected in fixture editor, users may use the right-click menu and select Copy as ICT Fixture to copy the selected mount points data and create new fixtures.

8 Mount points and ICT fixtures may now be individually disabled from the layer viewer. Disabled mount points and fixtures are ignored during FEA analysis and 3D model generation. Mount points and fixtures may be enabled or disabled from with the editor or with the Suppress or Unsuppress menu options on the objects in the layer viewer. The mount point editor now displays the estimated weight of the selected mount point when editing mount point properties Parts List The part weight property in the parts list is now a read-only field which is automatically computed based on the part dimensions and material density. Any previously entered part weights which are 0 are automatically removed and replaced with the guessed part weight. Updated the Part Editor so that when a new package is chosen by a user the "PackageDB" source property remains as Sherlock originally chose. The package properties chosen by the user are still set as "User" source. This change allows so if the "User" source values are cleared, the original Sherlock choice is reset. Updated the Part Editor and Part Viewer dialogs so that only a single instance of the dialog may be open at a time for a given part Semiconductor Wearout The equations to compute the failure mechanisms for the NBTI and HCI acceleration factors have been updated to make use of test and applied duty cycle. The Test Duty Cycle property is specified on the Test tab of the Part editor and the Applied Duty Cycle property is specified on the Electrical tab of the Part editor Solder Joint Fatigue Updated the LCCC solder model to use CC model for LCCC packages during Solder Joint Fatigue analysis. Added SENJU M794 solder to the Sherlock Solder library Thermal Event Analysis Properties The Solder Joint Fatigue, Component Failure Mechanism, Semiconductor Wearout, and Thermal Derating analysis properties have been updated to include an option which allows for the part temperature rise value from being applied to the minimum event temperature. By default, the part temperature rise value is applied to both the minimum and maximum event temperatures User Interface Did you know that Sherlock can generate a three-dimensional PDF from the 3D viewer which when opened in a PDF reader will function similar to Sherlock's own 3D viewer? Give it a try and click the camera icon in the 3D viewer and save a file with a ".pdf" extension. Added a search feature which allows for text search when viewing the raw contents of CCA text files in Sherlock. Additionally, the text search feature is available for analysis log and error files. If the search box is not displayed when viewing a file, press CTRL-F, CTRL-S, F3, or selecting from the right-click pop-up menu to display the search field.

9 A Help menu item has been added to the right-click menu for analysis modules. It allows for access to the User Guide for the selected analysis module. A Help button has also been added to the analysis properties dialog when running an analysis task or exporting a FEA model or generating a 3D model. Added to the Sherlock Client Project menu a Recent Projects entry when running Sherlock in single-project mode which allows previously opened projects to be opened quickly. A "Sherlock Single Project" link is now created in the Start menu item for Sherlock and optionally added as a Desktop shortcut during the installation. Updated the Sherlock Life Cycle profile editors to support copy and paste operations in the profile tables.

10 5 Bug Fixes Fixed a bug that prevented the part library from being updated when using the Parts -> Update Part Library from Parts List menu option. Using the "Update Part DB From Selected" was not affected. Fixed a bug parsing IPC-2581 files with a "layerref" value less than three characters in length. Fixed a bug that prevented the vibration lead and wire bond result tables from appearing when there was more than one life cycle event with the same name. Fixed a bug that didn't clear ICT analysis results when changes were made to ICT fixtures or test points. Corrected the sorting of the part weight field when included in the Parts List. It was previously being sorted alpha-numerically which was a problem since these values are in exponential format. Fixed a bug with the BGA model Solder Joint Fatigue analysis when the Ball Units were specified other than millimeters. Fixed a bug when importing vibration profiles which contained empty rows. Fixed a bug on the Part Editor "Package" tab which allowed invalid numeric values to be entered for some properties. Corrected the problem of the Solder Thickness property in the Part Editor from automatically changing to ½ it's value for non-qfn packages when adding a part.

11 6 Supported Platforms Sherlock requires the following minimum hardware and software requirements. 6.1 Hardware Requirements Processor Multi-core x64 Intel or AMD processor Memory 4 GB minimum, 8 GB preferred Hard Disk Space 200 MB for installation and 4 GB project space. 6.2 Software Requirements 64-bit versions of Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10 Java 8 64-bit Runtime Environment (see note below for Java versions 9 and later) Windows.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Adobe Reader 8.x or higher or compatible PDF viewer Microsoft Visual C Redistributable Package (for use with FlexNet licensing only) 6.3 Optional Software Requirements The following may also be used with additional Sherlock license features enabled: Abaqus ANSYS Mechanical Classic ANSYS Workbench NX Nastran 6.4 Supported FlexNet License Servers 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows bit versions of Linux on the x86 platform that are Linux LSB certified, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux and CentOS (not including SUSE Linux). 6.5 Global Part Library and Software Update saas.dfrsolutions.com, TCP port 443 or 80 update.dfrsolutions.com, TCP port Java Version 9 and Later DfR does not support Java 9 or 10 with Sherlock. Java 8 is still the recommended supported Java architecture. Java 11, which is the next long-term support version of Java, is minimally supported by Sherlock version 6.1 and later. When using Java 11, warning messages in the Sherlock console related to "Illegal reflective access" will be displayed. These are currently only warning messages from Java and do not affect the operation of Sherlock.

12 7 Common Installation and Startup Problems 7.1 Installation Problems The installation wizard fails with an "Application Error" dialog indicate "Error in action DeleteFile", this can be caused by multiple issues: Sherlock or one of Sherlock's programs such as the 3D viewer are still running while the installation is happening. Close all open Sherlock programs and start the installation again. The installer executable is located in the same directory as the Sherlock installation. Move the installer executable to another folder and start the installation again. A third-party application has a file open in the Sherlock installation directory such as Windows Explorer. Close any applications which are accessing a file or directory from the Sherlock installation directory and start the installation again. If none of these issues resolve the problem, reboot your PC in case there is a hidden process that may have one of these files open. Renaming the prior installation folder then deleting it from Windows Explorer may also work. It is always safe to completely remove a version of Sherlock without affecting any user projects, libraries, and settings. 7.2 Startup Problems Sherlock fails to start with a "System Error" dialog that indicates not enough memory could be reserved. This can be caused by: There isn't a 64-bit version of Java installed on your PC. Java requires a 64-bit version of the Java Runtime Environment installed in order to successfully operate. There is more than one version of Java installed and the default location is a 32-bit version of Java. Use the Launcher Settings to select an installed 64-bit version of Java and restart Sherlock. Sherlock fails to start with a "SherlockClient has stopped working" Windows error. If the details provided in the dialog indicate a "Problem Event Name: CLR20r3", this will indicate that the Microsoft.NET 3.5 Framework is not installed or activated. Please review the section "Windows.NET Framework 3.5 SP1" in the Lesson 01- Getting Started tutorial. 7.3 High-DPI Displays When running Sherlock on PC's with high-dpi devices, the appearance of certain graphical user interface elements may not appear correct, such as font sizes. In order to correct the appearance on these displays, the Java application properties need to be adjusted. 1. Identify the location of the java.exe being used by Sherlock. To do this, start Sherlock and navigate to Settings -> Launcher Settings, then enable "Show Debug Output" and restart Sherlock. When Sherlock restarts, the full path to java.exe will be included in the console output. 2. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the location of java.exe, then right-click on java.exe. 3. Select Properties -> Compatibility tab 4. Depending on the version of Windows, look for "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" and select it, or look for "Override high DPI scaling behavior, scaling performed by: Application" and change it from "Application" to "System". 5. Save the change to java.exe properties. 6. Restart Sherlock and the display should be correct.
