1 KeyCreator Lesson KC9203 BOM Creation with Part References In this exercise, we ll create a Bill of Material (BOM) and balloons for the simple assembly illustrated to the right. This is an assembly using Part References. We ll start with a new file in View 1. (The Top View.) STEP ONE: If you have never used the BOM function before on a particular computer, you will have to create a system variable (KCBOM10) to act as a guide to find the files on your system. Highlight the MY COMPUTER Icon on your computer and Right Mouse Click on it. Then, click on the PROPERTIES Option in the menu that appears. A Dialog Box appears. Click on the ADVANCED Tab. A new Dialog appears. Click on the NEW Button. Enter KCBOM10 for the Variable Name. For the value, enter the full path name to your CKD/BOM directory. Click on OK s working outward until you return to your main screen. KUBOTEK Freedom and Precision 1

2 STEP TWO: Creating the Assembly Let s quickly create an assembly using some standard parts. (The parts we ll use are described in lesson KC9201. If you haven t done that lesson yet, now is a good time to do that.) Click on the CREATE REFERENCE Icon. A Dialog Box appears. Select the 0Base File and then click on the OPEN Button. The 0Base part will be our ground part, so you should have no checks on the three Associative Options at the top of the Dialog Box. Check the Use Current Cplane Option, Animate Placement Option, and the Key In Rotation Option. The Rotation Angle should be 0. Hit the ENTER Key. Click on the KeyIn Option and hit the ENTER Key three times to position the reference at the origin. Then, switch to the Isometric View. (View 7.) KUBOTEK Freedom and Precision 2

3 Click on the CREATE REFERENCE Icon again. This time, select the 0Bracket file and click on the OPEN Button. This time, place checks on the Associative Insertion Plane and Associative Position Options. Then, hit the ENTER Key. Click on the EndEnt Option on the Conversation Bar. As you move the cursor over the screen, notice that the Bracket is oriented flat to the screen. Click on the CONSTRUCTION PLAN Icon and select the top face of the base part. Notice that the bracket reorients properly. Click on the top, left, front corner of the base part. Your screen should now look like this: Take a moment to save it as 0BracketAssy1. Continue populating the assembly, adding two 0Screw references, one 0Shaft reference, and one 0Wheel reference. When you are done you should have an assembly like this: KUBOTEK Freedom and Precision 3

4 STEP THREE: Now, let s populate the BOM. Click on the TOOLS Pulldown Menu, then on BOM and TABLE, and finally on CREATE A BOM. A large Dialog Box appears. Click on the ADD Button at the bottom, left corner of the box. Then, click on the ellipsis to the right of the Template field. Navigate to the BOM Folder that is located within your CKD Folder in KeyCreator. Then, select the BOM Template Sample NA Filename Option and click on the OPEN Button. Then, click on the OK Button. 5 Click on the + sign in front of the BOM Entry in the Dialog Box. Then, click on the Data Entry. Click on the Add/Remove Entity Button. You are returned to the viewport. Click on the ALL DSP Option an then the ALL Option. Hit the ENTER Key. You are returned to the Dialog Box. Notice that the BOM Fields are now populated with all of the part references. STEP FOUR: Let s configure our Balloon Notes. Click on the Balloon Configuration Option on the left side of the Dialog Box. They say variety is the spice of life! so let s select a hexagonal style balloon! KUBOTEK Freedom and Precision 5

6 STEP FIVE: To Place Balloons, click on the Data Entry on the left side of the Dialog Box. Then, highlight all of the rows in the BOM Field. Click on the Add Balloon Button. You are returned to the Viewport. Notice that Wheel is highlighted. Click on the wheel to set the arrow tip location then move the cursor out and click to set the balloon. Your first balloon is placed. Now click on the SKIP Button on the Conversation Bar. Notice that the Shaft Highlights. Place a balloon on the shaft and click on the SKIP Button. The two screws highlight next. Place a balloon on each screw and THEN click on the SKIP Button. KUBOTEK Freedom and Precision 6

7 Next, place a balloon on the bracket, click on the SKIP Button, and place a balloon on the block. Then, click on the ACCEPT Button. Your screen should look like this: STEP SIX: Placing the table. Click on the OUTPUT Option on the left side of the Dialog Box. Then, click on the POSITION TABLE Button. You are returned to the Viewport. Move the cursor and a ghost table follows. Click to place the BOM Table. Your screen should look like this: (Note, we placed the table and balloons in model space. We could just as easily have placed these details in an associated layout.)
