Objectives Adobe is a media content manager integrated with many Adobe products for quick access to project files. is very easy to use as a bridge between your library of assets and the project files you are developing in programs such as Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Fireworks, Flash, Illustrator, and InDesign. In, you can open and preview any file format that Adobe recognizes such as JPGs, SWFs, PNGs, PDFs, MP3s, and MP4s. Although the most common use of is to organize and view media, it has many powerful features that you will find useful, such as adding metadata and keywords to files. Metadata is file information you add to a file with tags (words) that are used to identify and describe the file. Keywords are words you add to a file to identify, group, and sort files. You work for a marketing firm that designs and maintains websites for several business clients. They include a beach resort, a nursery, a travel agency, a canoe outfitter, and a catering business. You will use to manage all of the media files that will be used to create the sites, so you begin by looking at the organizational functions has to offer. 2 UNIT Dreamweaver CS6 steps TROUBLE If a dialog box opens asking if you want to activate a Flash add in, check with your instructor. Once is running, you can add it to the Dock permanently by [control]- clicking the icon, clicking Options, then clicking Keep in Dock. Starting Adobe CS6 Adobe is packaged with the Adobe Creative Suite. There are several ways to access the program: by opening it directly from your Applications or Program Files folder on your computer s hard drive, or within Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or InDesign either with the button on the Menu bar (in Windows, it s next to Help), or by choosing File on the Menu bar, then Browse in within the program. In Flash, the button is on the Document toolbar. A streamlined version of called Mini is also available in Photoshop and InDesign; it appears as a panel that opens directly within the Photoshop and InDesign programs. You use as your primary tool for viewing, copying, and moving media files similar to the way you use Windows Explorer or Macintosh Finder. You can also configure to start automatically each time you log in or start your computer or device by choosing Start At Login on the Advanced tab in the Adobe Preferences dialog box. To access the Preferences dialog box, click Edit on the Menu bar, then choose Preferences. You begin your work by starting and locating your media files. Win 1. Click the Start button on the taskbar 2. Point to All Programs (if necessary), click Adobe CS6, then proceed to Step 3 Mac 1. Click Finder in the Dock, then click Applications 2. Click the Adobe CS6 folder, double-click the Adobe CS6 application, then proceed to Step 3 From an Adobe Creative Suite 6 component that is integrated with 1. Click File, click Browse in, then proceed to Step 3 Or 1. Click the Adobe button on the Standard toolbar (Dreamweaver), then proceed to Step 3 Or 1. Press [Ctrl][Alt][O], then proceed to Step 3 All users 3. Verify that you are in the Essentials workspace (the default workspace), as shown in Figure BR-1 Your panels probably show a darker background than the panels in Figure BR-1. To increase the readability, the interface was lightened for the figures. See Editing Preferences on page Use the breadcrumb trail across the top of the window on the Path bar or use the Folders panel to navigate to and select the _data folder from the drive and folder where you store your data files, as shown in Figure BR-1 Thumbnails of each file in the Data Files folder appear in the Content panel. These are the same media data files you will use to complete each of the lessons in Dreamweaver. 2 Using Adobe to Manage Assets Unit C indd 2
3 Figure BR-1: Starting Path bar Folders panel Essentials workspace selected Breadcrumb trail Files appear in Content panel Editing Preferences The panels in the CS6 interface have dark gray backgrounds that help you focus better on the images displayed in the Content panel. You can lighten the interface if you prefer by choosing a different color theme. To do this, click Edit on the Menu bar (Win) or click CS6 on the Menu bar (Mac), choose Preferences, then view the General tab in the Preferences dialog box. Four color boxes ranging from a dark gray to a light gray appear next to Color Theme. Click one of these boxes to select a different color theme or use the User Interface Brightness slider to create your own color theme. You can also enable (or disable) a script that enables other applications to communicate with when you start by checking the Adobe CS6 check box on the Startup Scripts tab in the Preferences dialog box. 4 UNIT Dreamweaver CS6 details You can resize panels by dragging the horizontal divider bar between panels or the vertical divider bar on either side of the Content panel. Exploring the Workspace When you start, you see the Essentials workspace, the default workspace that includes all of the menus, panels, buttons, bars, and panes that you use to organize your media files. Other workspace choices are the Filmstrip, Metadata, Output, Keywords, Preview, Light Table, and Folders workspaces. You can change workspaces by using the Window menu or by clicking one of the Workspace buttons on the Application bar. You can also arrange the panes and panels to create a custom workspace and then assign it a unique name using the Window > Workspace > New Workspace command. You can work in Compact mode, which is a mode with a smaller, simplified workspace window, as shown in Figure BR-2. Press [Ctrl][Enter] (Win) or [command][return] (Mac) to switch back and forth between your workspace and Compact mode. You spend some time exploring the workspace. Use Figure BR-3 to locate the workspace components listed below. The Essentials workspace is divided into three panes, which are arranged in columns and further divided into panels. Each panel can be expanded or collapsed by double-clicking the panel title bar. You can also hide panels using the Windows > (panel name). The left pane includes the Favorites, Folders, Filter, Collections, and Export panels. You can use the Favorites panel to quickly access folders that you designate as folders you use frequently. The Folders panel is used to navigate through your folders to select a folder to view the folder contents. The Filter panel is used for filtering files to view in the Content panel. The Collections panel is used to group assets into collections. The Export panel is used to optimize images by saving them as JPEGs for use on the web. The center pane is the Content panel, where thumbnails of the files from the selected drive and folder in the Folders panel appear. You can change the size of the thumbnails by using the Thumbnail slider at the bottom of the workspace. The right pane includes the Preview, Metadata, and Keywords panels. The Preview panel is where a preview of a selected file appears. The Metadata panel lists the metadata for a selected file. You use the Metadata panel to assign new metadata to a file. The Keywords panel lists the keywords assigned to a file. You use the Keywords panel to add new keywords to a file. The Menu bar with the program commands is at the top of the workspace. Below the Menu bar is the Application bar that contains navigation buttons, the Workspace buttons, and the Search text box. Under the Application bar is the Path bar, where you see the path for the selected folder in the Folders panel that you are currently viewing. The Path bar makes it easy to navigate quickly from folder to folder. 4 Using Adobe to Manage Assets Unit C indd 4

6 UNIT Dreamweaver CS6 steps You cannot add metadata to.gif files. Your other keywords will vary as keywords are deleted or added as you use or as files are selected with additional keywords associated with them. If the files are not listed in alphabetical order, click View > Sort > By Filename. Using Metadata The Metadata panel is a rich source of information about a file, including the camera settings used (descriptive information that you cannot change) and copyright information (additive data that you can change). You can view and edit the copyright information in the IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) Core section of the Metadata panel. Image resolution, author name, and keywords are also examples of metadata you can view in the Metadata panel. Metadata is saved using the Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) standard. XMP metadata is used by Adobe products, such as Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, and Photoshop, and is usually stored with the file name. If a file contains metadata, XMP allows the metadata to stay with the file when the file is converted to a different file type or placed in a project. You can add metadata using the File > File Info command. You use the Keywords panel to view and add keywords to a file to help group, organize, and sort files. There are two types of keywords: parent keywords and child keywords. Child keywords are also referred to as sub keywords. Child keywords are subcategories of parent keywords. For instance, you could have a parent keyword food and a child keyword desserts. After you have added keywords to files, you can use the Filter panel to sort files by their keywords. You have added keywords to each of the media files you will use in your websites. You view each group separately to quickly verify that you added the correct keywords to each file. 1. Click the Metadata panel tab to open the Metadata panel, click the first file listed in the Content panel, blooms_banner.jpg, then click File Properties (if necessary) to expand the panel to view the file size, dimensions, and resolution of the selected file, as shown in Figure BR-4 2. Click the Keywords panel tab, double-click the parent keyword Unit to expand it if necessary, then view the keywords for the selected file, as shown in Figure BR-5 Keywords let you search for and quickly locate files with common characteristics. Each file is assigned one or more chapter numbers that correspond to the unit or units the file is used in. The blooms_banner.jpg file is used in Units A, B, E, and F. Each file also includes a keyword that corresponds to the website the file is associated with. 3. Double-click the Filter panel tab to expand the panel if necessary, click Keywords, if necessary to expand it, then click to select striped_umbrella under the Keywords criteria Fourteen files appear in the Content panel, as shown in Figure BR Click to select blooms under the Keywords criteria, then click to deselect striped_umbrella The Content panel now shows seventeen files listed for the Blooms & Bulbs website. 5. Click to deselect blooms under the Keywords criteria All sixty-one files appear in the Content panel. Using Metadata to label and rate files You use the Keywords panel to view and add keywords to a file to help group, organize, and sort files. There are two types of keywords: parent keywords and child keywords. Child keywords are also referred to as sub keywords. Child keywords are subcategories of parent keywords. For instance, you could have a parent keyword animal and a child keyword dog. After you have added keywords to files, you can use the Filter panel to sort files by their keywords. You can also identify groups of files by using labels. Labels allow you to assign a file a color or a star rating from zero to five stars. The stars will appear under the thumbnail and above the filename in the Content panel and Preview panel. This is an easy way to mark the files you want to keep and others you may want to delete. You can also add labels such as Approved to indicate art that has been approved for a project. After you have entered labels for files, you can filter them with their labels in the Filter panel. To remove a label, use the Label > No Label command. 6 Using Adobe to Manage Assets Unit C indd 6
