This document also includes a brief description of the new features and faults fixed with the release. This document does not cover the full use of the product. NetVault for the Mac OS X (and later) operating system incorporates a native Mac OS X user interface to give current Mac users an application with a familiar look and feel. This section documents features new with this release: This is intended as a maintenance release. No new functionality was introduced. Processor Support This release of NetVault:Backup offers support for Mac OS X operating systems running on both PowerPC and Intel-based processors. Upgrading NetVault If upgrading a Client installation of NetVault:Backup version 7.1.x or 7.3.x, that is running version 10.3.x Mac OS X ( Panther ), the following instructions must be followed: 1. Launch a terminal session and issue the following command: sudo rm -r /Library/Receipts/netvault_client.pkg 2. A prompt will be revealed requesting input of a password for the administrator-level account that is currently in use. Input this value and press Return. 3. Continue with the upgrade procedure, as illustrated in the section, Upgrading NetVault of Chapter 2: Installation of the NetVault:Backup Administrator s Guide for Mac OS X. Other Notes Regarding Upgrades The NetVault Server Must Be Upgraded Before Any NetVault Clients in the NetVault Domain - The NetVault Server can not support a NetVault Client running a newer version of NetVault:Backup (i.e., if your NetVault Server is currently running version 7.4.2, all NetVault Clients in the domain must also be running version or earlier). Accessing Additional NetVault Functionality NetVault for Mac OS X New Features General Notes With this release of the Mac OS X GUI for NetVault, not all optional functionality is available. This includes: Advanced Reporting (i.e., creation of custom report jobs and new report components) Policy Management Global Notification However, this functionality can still be accessed if desired. This requires that you launch this installation of the NetVault GUI in an X11 application window (i.e., using an application such as XFree86 -- similar to previous versions of NetVault for Mac OS X). From the machine established as the NetVault Server, perform the following steps to launch this version of the GUI: End User Release Notes - NetVault:Backup for Mac OS X Page 2 of 6

3 1. Initiate an X11 terminal session (for details on this procedure, please refer to any documentation offered on Apple s web site for X11-based products, such as XFree86). 2. In the xterm window that appears, input the following command at the prompt: sudo nvgui 3. A prompt will appear requesting the current user s login password be input. Input this value and press Enter. The X11 NetVault GUI will be loaded into a separate xterm window. Important: 1. NetVault s Access Control functionality is not available in the native Mac OS X version of the NetVault Administrator GUI. If this functionality is enabled in the X11 NetVault GUI, it will not be possible to access the NetVault Administrator GUI (i.e., without Access Control functionality, it is not possible to login into the NetVault Administrator GUI). Therefore, it is recommended that this functionality be left disabled. 2. It is recommended that the X11 NetVault GUI only be loaded to access the optional functionality outlined in the previous points. For complete details on the use of this functionality in the X11 NetVault GUI, please refer to the standard version of the NetVault Administrator s Guide (for version 7.4.x). Accessing the X11 Version of the NetVault:Backup GUI As briefly noted in the previous point, the X11 based UI interface must be run as sudo user. The following point below illustrate examples on how to access the X11 UI interfaces: X11 NetVault:Backup GUI: sudo nvgui X11 NetVault:Backup Configurator: sudo nvconfigurator Using the Encryption Plugin NetVault s Encryption Plugin is an optional piece of software that allows you to encrypt your backups for added security. Each build of this plugin is specific to a build of the NetVault Core software. Prior to attempting an installation, ensure that the version of the Encryption Plugin obtained is the exact build created for the build of the Core software that is currently installed. Backing Up and Restoring an Xsan with NetVault It is only possible to backup and restore to an Xsan that is being administered by a machine running a qualifying version of Mac OS X, where NetVault version is installed (i.e., it is not possible to backup/restore an Xsan that is being administered by a machine running a non-mac OS X Operating System). This machine can either be configured as the NetVault Server or a NetVault Client Known Issues This section documents known issues that exist with the release of NetVault version for Mac OS X: Xsan No Support for Virtual Disk Libraries on Xsan - While it is possible to create a device of this type in an Xsan managed storage environment, and it may seem functional, there is a potential for data loss. Therefore, no support for these devices is offered. Xsan Quota Configuration is not Explicitly Backed up or Restored. End User Release Notes - NetVault:Backup for Mac OS X Page 3 of 6

4 Xsan File Affinity and Incremental Backups - If only the affinity for a selected file has changed between the backups in an Incremental backup scenario, the file may not be recognized as changed and therefore left out of the next Incremental backup. Due to this, when the file is restored, it may be restored with its old affinity. Xsan File Systems and Directory Timestamps During a Restore - On an Xsan file system, the File System Plugin sometimes incorrectly believes that directory (but not file) timestamps have changed. This adds a small overhead to incremental performance and backup size. The Specify Minium Space Required on Media Before Backup Option May Not Function Properly (NVG-2333) - In various Mac OS X operating system environments, when this option is employed, it is ignored and a backup job will continue to use space on target media, until that media is full (and also span the job across multiple media if necessary). This issue has been known to occur only on real devices (i.e., not with Virtual Drives and Libraries). End User License Agreement (EULA) Display Issue - If the default locale is changed (e.g., from UTF8 to EUC or vice-versa), the EULA may not be displayed properly. The proposed work-around for this issue is to use an EUC displayable terminal to view the EULA. It is Only Possible to Configure a Library Device in the X11 NetVault GUI - No Configure command is available for use in the contextual menu that is found when you right-click/ctrl-click on a library device in the NetVault Administrator GUI. The command is available in the Devices tab of the Device Management window of the X11 NetVault GUI. Therefore it is only possible to set configuration options for a library/media changer in the X11 NetVault GUI. Long Unicode File Names - There is an issue when encountering filenames that require more than 256 bytes (not visible characters) to encode in UTF8. This can happen when creating a long file name using Unicode characters outside the ASCII range. Files are backed up, but when the files are restored they come back with a file name in which the characters at the end of the file name are jumbled. This is because POSIX API's in a Mac OS X environment jumble file names so that they will fit within the POSIX name limit of 256 bytes. Note that very unusual filenames are required in order to encounter the problem. General Unicode Issues and the File System Plugin - There are caveats to the support for Unicode files and this plugin, including the points illustrated below: Non-ASCII/Invalid Unicode File Issue - If viewing the extra information contained in a log message and there is a file name that is neither ACSII nor valid Unicode, the User Interface will crash. The Finder is also not able to display such file names. File System Plugin Inclusion List Functionality Does Not Support the Use of Unicode Characters - It is not possible to include Unicode file names in an Inclusion List file. Restore Job Pane s Rename/Relocate Functionality does not Support the Use of Unicode Characters Restore Job Pane s Search Functionality does not Support the Use of Unicode Characters There are no Facilities in NetVault for Comparing Unicode Strings Case-insensitively Restoring Unicode Files to a Non-Unicode File System is Not Properly Supported - If the Target Client frame of the Restore Job pane is used to relocate a restore to a target Client with a different file system, NetVault will not perform the appropriate conversion of the Unicode name to a legacy encoding. Unicode Sort Order Issue - The order in which NetVault sorts Unicode strings will not match Apple's specification of the correct sort order. Migrating Files Between File System Types - Files backed up on a particular file system type should restore to that file system type. If backing up from one file system type and then restoring to another, take the following points into consideration: Files with ASCII Names Should Restore Properly End User Release Notes - NetVault:Backup for Mac OS X Page 4 of 6

5 Nearly All Files with Unicode Names Should Restore Properly - HFS+ insists on canonically decomposed names, while UFS and ACFS have no such limitation. Therefore, some Unicode names using composed characters may not migrate from UFS/ACFS to HFS+. Migrating from HFS+ to UFS/ ACFS should always work. Names that are Neither ASCII or Unicode will Generally not be Restorable to HFS+. (This is not a NetVault limitation.) Interoperability and File System Plugin Backups/Restores - File System Plugin backups performed with this version will not be restorable with old versions of this plugin for Mac; or any current plugins on Linux, Windows and UNIX. Consolidate Incremental Backups Plugin - If File System Plugin backups that were created with this version of NetVault are consolidated with a distribution of the Consolidate Incremental Backups Plugin that is older than version 7.3.1, build 18, all Metadata will be lost for directories in the consolidated backup (e.g., ACL, extended attributes, catalog information and Xsan affinity will be lost in the consolidated backup). This applies to all backups performed with an earlier build of the Consolidate Incremental Backups Plugin, regardless of Operating System platform. Case Insensitive File Systems - The File System Plugin (as well as all previous Mac OS X Core plugins), assumes all file systems are case sensitive. In reality, most Mac OS X file systems are case insensitive. HFSX file systems may be either sensitive or insensitive. In most cases, this does not create a problem. However the points below illustrate issues that may occur: Case Changes and Omitted Files/Directories - This issue is best illustrated in an example: A job is created and a file or directory is omitted in the NetVault GUI (i.e., it is marked with a red cross). Then, the omitted file/directory has its name changed on disk, but only in regards to its case (e.g., it is changed from lower case to upper case). With the case changed, each time this job is run, this omission will be ignored, and the file will be included in the backup. Exclusion Lists and Case Sensitivity - Items specified in the various Exclusion List settings offered with the File System Plugin, will not work if the case used in the settings does not match the case in the Target Mac OS X Client s file system. Inclusion Lists and Case Sensitivity - Two points apply to case sensitivity and the use of the File System Plugin s Inclusion List functionality: - Double Selection - If an item is selected in the tree of the Selections frame for a backup job and a reference for the same item exists in an Inclusion List file that is marked for use in the same job, NetVault will generally ignore one of these selections, and only backup the desired data once. However, if a difference in case exists between these selections (e.g., the Selections frame reveals a directory name as capitalized, while it is referenced in the selected Inclusion List file as lower case), all data will be backed up twice (i.e., this includes all child-level directories and files that may be contained within a conflicted directory). - Double References in an Inclusion List File - If an item is listed twice in an Inclusion List file using different case for each, the item (and any children) will be backed up twice Fault Fixes This section documents known issues that have been corrected with this release of NetVault:Backup.
