1 Big City Lights- Using Photoshop 7.0 This Tutorial makes use of Defining Patterns and Layer Effects in order to create a word in lights. It is based on: Big City Lights by Scott Kelby and Felix Nelson, Photoshop User, March 2002, P. 20 Step 1: Click on the foreground color swatch. Set the foreground color to white (#FFFFFF). In the Color Picker dialog box, set the foreground color to white. Then click on the OK button. Step 2: Click on the background color swatch. Set the background color to black (#000000). In the Color Picker dialog box, set the background color to black. Then click on the OK button 2004 Mosaic Design Services Page 1 of 20

2 Step 3: Create a new image file and click on the OK button. Select File>>New from the Menu bar. Width = 8 inches Height = 6 inches Resolution = 72 inches Mode = RGB Color Background Color = Selected Step 4: Create a new Layer. Select Layer>>New>>Layer from the Menu bar. Name = Layer 1 Group with Previous Layer = Unchecked Color = None Mode = Normal Opacity = 100% Click on the OK button. Step 5: Select the Elliptical Marquee tool. Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool from the Tool bar Mosaic Design Services Page 2 of 20

3 Step 6: Using the settings shown below, click in the center of the document to make a circular selection. Photoshop New Selection = Selected Feather = 0 px Anti-aliased = Checked Style = Fixed Size Width = 7 px Height = 7 px Step 7: Fill in the selection with the foreground color. Press Shift-Backspace keys. Use = Foreground Color Mode = Normal Opacity = 100% Preserve Transparency = Unchecked Click on the OK button Mosaic Design Services Page 3 of 20

4 Step 8: Make a copy of the dot. Press the Control-Alt-Shift keys, then click-and-drag toward the right to make a duplicate. Don t move the duplicate too far from the original. To fill in the dot with white, repeat Step 7. It should like the picture below. Step 9: Re-select the original dot. Select Magic Wand from the Tool bar. While pressing the Shift key, re-select the original dot. Step 10: Add two more dots. Press the Control-Alt-Shift keys, then click-and-drag the other set of dots below the original dots. Try to make them the same distance apart. The dots should look like the picture on the next page Mosaic Design Services Page 4 of 20

5 Step 11: Select the Rectangular Marquee tool. Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool from the Tool bar. Step 12: Using the settings shown below, click in the center of the document to make a rectangular selection. New Selection = Selected Feather = 0 px Style = Normal 2004 Mosaic Design Services Page 5 of 20

6 Step 13: Make a selection around the dots (try to center the dots in the selection). It should look like so: Step 14: Invert the selection by pressing the Control I keys. The dots will disappear Mosaic Design Services Page 6 of 20

7 Step 15: Temporarily hide the background layer. Punch out the eye on the Background layer to hide it. Step 16: Save the Dot pattern. Select Edit>>Define Pattern from the Menu bar Mosaic Design Services Page 7 of 20

8 In the Name field, type in Dots Pattern. Then click on the OK button. Step 18: In the main picture, press the Del key to remove the dots. Step 19: Deselect the selection. Select Select>>Deselect from the Menu bar. Step 20: Save the Dots Pattern file. Step 21: In the big image, Select All. Select Select>>All from the Menu bar. Step 22: Select the Dots Pattern for the Fill. Select Edit>>Fill from the Menu bar Mosaic Design Services Page 8 of 20

9 Click on the Down arrow for Use, and select Pattern from the drop-down list. Click on the Down arrow for Use, and select the Dots Pattern from the table of patterns. Then click on the OK button Mosaic Design Services Page 9 of 20

10 The picture should look similar to the one shown below except that the Paint Shop Pro dots will be a bright orange. Step 23: Deselect the selection. Select Select>>Deselect from the Menu bar Mosaic Design Services Page 10 of 20

11 Step 24: Make the background layer visible again. Click on the gray box on the left hand side of the Background layer to make it visible (eye icon). Step 25: In Paint Shop Pro, use the Drop Shadow to emulate Photoshop s Outer Glow. Select Layer>>Layer Style>>Outer Glow... from the Menu bar Mosaic Design Services Page 11 of 20

12 Step 26: Set the Outer Glow. Outer Glow = Checked Color Swatch = Bright Yellow (#FFFF00) Spread = 6 Size = Mosaic Design Services Page 12 of 20

13 Step 27: Set the Inner Glow. Outer Glow = Checked Inner Glow = Checked Color Swatch = Bright Orange (#FF9900) Blend Mode = Multiply Size = Mosaic Design Services Page 13 of 20

14 Step 28: Set the Bevel and Emboss characteristics. Outer Glow = Checked Inner Glow = Checked Bevel and Emboss = Checked Depth = 200 Size = 2 Highlight Opacity Mode = 100 Color Swatch = Bright Orange (#FF9900) 2004 Mosaic Design Services Page 14 of 20

15 Step 29: Setup the Color Overlay. Outer Glow = Checked Inner Glow = Checked Bevel and Emboss = Checked Color Overlay = Checked Color Swatch = White (#FFFFFF) Click on the OK button Mosaic Design Services Page 15 of 20

16 Now the picture should look like the one below. Step 30: Select the Text tool. Select the Text tool from the Tool bar. Step 31: Set the Type. Then type the words NEW YORK with NEW on one line and YORK on the line underneath. Font Family = Impact Font Style = Regular Font Size = 150 Anti-aliasing Method = Crisp Align Text = Center Color Swatch = Black (#000000) 2004 Mosaic Design Services Page 16 of 20

18 Step 32: Lower the opacity of the Text layer to 0%. Set the Opacity to 0% on the Text layer. Step 33: Temporarily hide Layer 1. Punch out the eye icon on Layer Mosaic Design Services Page 18 of 20

19 Step 34: Select the Text. On the Text layer, press Control-click. Step 35: Make Layer 1 visible again and selected. Click on Layer 1 to make it visible and selected. Step 36: Add a Layer Mask. Select Layer>>Add Layer Mask>>Reveal Selection from the Menu bar Mosaic Design Services Page 19 of 20
