BASICS OF PIXLR EDITOR Pixlr is a website which you can edit your images professionally. It is a cloud cased system and founded in Sweden. It is similar to Photoshop (but it s free to use online) and you can do some amazing photo manipulations with it. Link to the site: 1) You can create a new image. 2) You can open an image from your computer 3) You can open an image with using URL. 4) You can reach your images in the cloud system of Pixlr. (Requires an account) Please keep in mind you have to know how perform each of the above tasks, so it s imperative that you complete each of these exercises and save them correctly!

How to Crop an Image in Pixlr Editor 1. Open the following image using this URL: OqfEX81EGRM/T8N4juuLQ8I/AAAAAAAAEC4/Z83bnX_It6Y/s1600/camaro-amarelo10.jpg The toolbar is on the left. Please see the pixlr_tool.pdf file on my webpage as a guide. The smaller windows (Navigator, Layers, History) on the right will be especially important when we begin adding layers to our images. 2. Select the Crop Tool. Select the part of the image that you want to keep (not the part you want to remove). You will notice a Rule of Thirds grid will appear when using the crop function to help you develop strong composition. You can expand or narrow the Crop size by using the Blue Boxes in the corners. When you have cropped your image the way you want it, click somewhere else except the image and click Yes button in the confirm box (or you can just push Enter on your keyboard) to finalize your cropping. For this experiment, you can crop the image any way you would like, your image just needs to show me that you have cropped the original in order to receive credit.

3. Save your cropped image in the Project 1 folder of your Network folder. Use the following protocol to name your image: LastName_FirstInitial_Project#_Crop (ex. Gofney_B_Project1_Crop). (Remember: I can trace the history of your images so DO NOT try to take someone else s work and resave it as your own. The point of these exercises is to learn how to do each of these processes.)

How to Resize an Image in Pixlr Editor Resizing is an important skill for image editing because usually images. There are several ways to do it using Pixlr, but the simplest way is detailed below: 1. Open the following image from URL: 2. Click to the Image tab in the upper panel, then press Image Size. 3. A window should appear that asks you the Width and Height of the new image. Be sure the box Constrain proportions is checked so it won t warp the image. You may uncheck the box near it but, the quality of the image will break down. The current size of my image is 468x600 and I will change it to 960x1231 (the program will automatically update the height when you change the width).

4. Save your resized image in the Project 1 folder of your Network folder. Use the following protocol to name your image: LastName_FirstInitial_Project#_Resize (ex. Gofney_B_Project1_Resize). (Remember: I can trace the history of your images so DO NOT try to take someone else s work and resave it as your own. The point of these exercises is to learn how to do each of these processes.)

How to Fix Red Eye 1. Open the following image using this URL: 2. Click on the Red Eye tool in the left menu then simply click inside the red pupils on the image. 3. Save your edited image in the Project 1 folder of your Network folder. Use the following protocol to name your image: LastName_FirstInitial_Project#_RedEye (ex. Gofney_B_Project1_RedEye). (Remember: I can trace the history of your images so DO NOT try to take someone else s work and resave it as your own. The point of these exercises is to learn how to do each of these processes.)

How to Change Eye Color 1. Open the following image using this URL: 2. This process works best with a quality, clear image like the one we are using here. It is also easier if you zoom in a bit using the View tab and click on Zoom in. 3. Use the Lasso tool to surround the eye. The tricky part about using the lasso tool is that you have to keep holding the left button on your mouse as you are surrounding the object you are trying to select. This tool takes some getting used to, but the more you do it, the easier it will become. 4. Next, click on the Edit tab in the upper panel and click Copy.

5. Next, click on the Layer tab in the upper panel and select New Layer. Alternatively, you can also do this by going to the Layers navigation window on the right of your image and click the New Layer button near the Trash image (which deletes a selected layer). 6. Be sure you have selected the layer you just added in the Layers window, then Click Paste in the Edit Menu. 7. The eye image that you surrounded by Lasso Tool will show up. Then use the Move Tool to put the eye in the exact place as original

8. After moving the new eye in the original place. Open the Your Colors tool, then choose a color. 9. Click on the Brush Tool which is in the left Tool Menu and arrange the size of the Brush according to your iris size. You can arrange the size of the brush by using the gray strip under the Menu. (Top of the Website). Use the Diameter tool in the Brush menu.

10. After getting the exact size of the brush on the iris click once. The Eye will be the color that you chose before. 11. Click the Toggle Layer Settings in the Layer window. A menu will show up; Click on the "Darken" mode. Then adjust the Opacity above the "Darken" menu as you like.

12. Since the circle added from the Brush tool probably went into your eye lid, you will need to use the Eraser tool from the left toolbar. You can make adjustments to the eraser size the same way you did when using the brush tool. 13. Save your recolored image in the Project 1 folder of your Network folder. Use the following protocol to name your image: LastName_FirstInitial_Project#_EyeColor (ex. Gofney_B_Project1_EyeColor). (Remember: I can trace the history of your images so DO NOT try to take someone else s work and resave it as your own. The point of these exercises is to learn how to do each of these processes.)

How to Replace the Color of an Object 1. Open the following image using this URL: pa4/uiv87cszi5i/aaaaaaaafhi/_vqneuo8xha/s1600/chevrolet-camaro-production yellow-nose.jpg 2. Click Ctrl + A to surround all the image. 3. Then, click on the Lasso Tool and while holding the CTRL button down surround the colors you want to keep that are similar to your original color. For example; I am going to change the yellow, but there are few points I want to keep like Chevrolet emblem. 4. Once you have selected all the parts you want to keep (that are similar to your original color), let go of the CTRL button and click the Color Replacement Tool which is in the Tool Menu on the left side of the screen. 5. Choose the color you want to do from the Your Colors button at the bottom of the Tool Menu.

6. Set the Brush Size at the top of the site in the gray stripe. Now you can start replacing the Color by holding the left button of your mouse down and dragging it around the parts of the object you wish to replace the color on. 7. To get rid of the lines from the Lasso Tool go to the Edit Menu, then Click Deselect All (Ctrl + D).

8. Save your recolored image in the Project 1 folder of your Network folder. Use the following protocol to name your image: LastName_FirstInitial_Project#_Recolor (ex. Gofney_B_Project1_Recolor). (Remember: I can trace the history of your images so DO NOT try to take someone else s work and resave it as your own. The point of these exercises is to learn how to do each of these processes.)

How to Desaturate a Picture (Black and White) while an Object is still Colorful 1. Open the following image using this URL: 2. Click on the Lasso Tool icon on the tool bar. 3. Press Ctrl + A to select all the image. 4. Use the Lasso tool to surround the part/object that you want to keep colorful. There are 2 types of Lasso Tool that you can find in the gray stripe on the top of website; Freehand Lasso Tool and Polygonal Lasso Tool. I am going to use the Polygonal Lasso Tool, because it is more accurate than Freehand Lasso Tool. You can zoom in the object while using the Lasso Tool. Lastly, because you selected the whole image, you must use the CTRL button while using the Lasso Tool.

5. Go to the Adjustment Menu in the black stripe and click to Desaturate. 6. There will be parts that were selected when you used the Lasso tool but they need to be desaturated (like the leaf and finger in this image). Make sure you Deselect all and then click back onto the Lasso tool and use it again to select the fingers and leaf. If you want to select more than one part at a time, hold the Shift key down when making selections. 7. After Choosing the non-desaturated parts in the image by Lasso Tool, go to the Adjustment Menu and Click to Desaturate Button.

8. Lastly, to get rid of the lines in the image, go to the Edit Menu and Click to Deselect All (Ctrl + D). 9. Save your spot colored image in the Project 1 folder of your Network folder. Use the following protocol to name your image: LastName_FirstInitial_Project#_SpotColor (ex. Gofney_B_Project1_SpotColor). (Remember: I can trace the history of your images so DO NOT try to take someone else s work and resave it as your own. The point of these exercises is to learn how to do each of these processes.)

How to fix the parts that you don't want in your picture (pimples, blemishes, freckles, scars, etc.) The clone stamp tool in Pixlr Editor, as you might imagine, does one simple thing: It copies image details and pastes those details in the place of your choosing on the same layer. But, the clone tool can be used for more than just straight copying. Many people use it to create natural-looking blending when they are touching up a photo they've manipulated. What's handy about this tool is that you have all of the brush options at your disposal. It s a good idea to use a soft edge brush unless you want a very hard line where the cloning happens. Likewise, you can lower the opacity for a light blending touch. 1. Open the following image using this URL: Click on the Clone Stamp tool in the left tool bar. Select the brush style of your choosing. A quick note about the "aligned" option: One sometimes confusing detail about the clone tool is how to use the "aligned" option. When aligned is not selected, your sample point will remain where you initially sampled until you sample again. Every time you use your brush, you'll paste the original area again and again. When align is selected, the sampling point follows your mouse as you move it. 2. Place your pointer in the exact location you want to sample. Hold the Ctrl button down (Command button on a Mac). You'll notice the mouse pointer has turned to a target to indicate that it's time to pick the target area you'd like to clone. Click on the location you want to sample. Let go of the Ctrl button. 3. Move your brush to the area you want to apply what you've cloned and hold down the

mouse button to paint. You'll want to experiment with this tool to get the hang of it. Try 1 click applications at a time. For a more natural look, sample from multiple surrounding locations. Before After 4. Save your retouched image in the Project 1 folder of your Network folder. Use the following protocol to name your image: LastName_FirstInitial_Project#_Retouch (ex. Gofney_B_Project1_Retouch). (Remember: I can trace the history of your images so DO NOT try to take someone else s work and resave it as your own. The point of these exercises is to learn how to do each of these processes.)

How to Blur a Face in Pixlr 1. Select an image that you would want to blur a face out of OR you can open the following image using this URL: 2. Select the part that you want to blur with Lasso Tool or Marquee Tool 3. Go to Filter Menu on the black stripe, then click to Box Blur.

4. Select the blur amount in the menu which came out. (In my image it is 10) 5. Click to Deselect All (Ctrl + D) in the Edit Menu.

6. Save your blurred face image in the Project 1 folder of your Network folder. Use the following protocol to name your image: LastName_FirstInitial_Project#_Blur (ex. Gofney_B_Project1_Blur). (Remember: I can trace the history of your images so DO NOT try to take someone else s work and resave it as your own. The point of these exercises is to learn how to do each of these processes.)

How to Write a Patterned Text in Pixlr 1. Click to create a new image and create 800x600 sized image. (The 800x600 is optional) 2. Click Type Tool on the Tool Menu and add the text that you want to make patterned. (Here I did Wide Latin, size: 103) 3. Use the Move Tool to put the text at the center of the image 4. Go the Layers Window on the right side of the screen between the History Menu and Navigator. Right Click to the Layer which contains your Text and select Merge Down.

5. Then, double click the lock icon in the Layers Menu, near the Background text. It should turn to a checked box. 6. Go the Layer Menu on the top of the Website which is in the black stripe near the Image Menu. After that, open an image from your computer or URL OR you can use this image URL: 7. There will be Layer 2 and Layer 0 come up in the Layers Menu on the right side of the screen. Go to Layer 0 which contains your texture and surround the Text with using Wand Tool. Reminder: If you have a letter like A and R, Do not forget to surround the inner part of it with using Shift Button and Wand Tool (W)

8. Now, Scroll the Layer 2 to the Layer 0's place by grabbing and dropping with your mouse. 9. When you get an image that looks similar to the window above, use the Eraser Tool and start to erase the background.

10. Go to the Edit Menu and press Deselect All (Ctrl + D) 11. Use the Layer Styles to give shadows of your text. 12. In the Layers Menu, right click to Layer 2 and press Merge Down. 13. Save it in PNG format from the File Menu to your Project 1 folder of your Network folder. Use the following protocol to name your image: LastName_FirstInitial_Project#_Text (ex. Gofney_B_Project1_Text). (Remember: I can trace the history of your images so DO NOT try to take someone else s work and resave it as your own. The point of these exercises is to learn how to do each of these processes.)
