Impatica and PowerPoint for Blackboard Impatica is a software program which allows for the delivery of fully narrated and highly animated PowerPoint content over the Internet, plug-in free and even at modem speeds. The translated files can be placed on a CD or website and are compatible with Blackboard. More information available here: Step One: Narrate PowerPoint and set up timings. Your computer must be equipped with a sound card, microphone, and speakers for you to record and hear a narration. When you are ready to record, find a quiet area where you won t be interrupted. It is usually better to do a practice run first. Instructions for setting up a microphone may be found here: US/windows7/Connect-a-microphone-music-player-or-other-audio-device-to-your-computer To Record Narration 1. In PowerPoint, go to Slide Show on the ribbon and click Record Slide Show. Select Start Recording from Beginning or Start Recording from Current Slide. 2. A Record Slide Show box will appear. Select what you want to record: Slide and animation timings and/or Narrations and laser pointer. Click Start Recording. Page 1
3. Your Slide Show will start and PowerPoint will record the options set in the previous step. Use the Recording box to Advance, Pause, or Repeat the recording of a slide. As you speak into the microphone, use the tools in the Recording box, the mouse or keyboard to move through your presentation. ** Be sure to wait at least 3 seconds after you finish speaking before advancing to the next slide. If you don t wait, portions of your audio file may be lost. 4. Once you complete your narration, you must save your narrated PowerPoint file. To save the file, click the File tab on the ribbon and select Save As. Select a File Name. Change the file type in the Save as type box to PowerPoint Presentation. Click Save. Please note: Files saved as PowerPoint Presentations (.pptx) will Impaticize, but will not include your audio narration. Page 2
Step Two: Translate with Impatica If you don t have your own license, this step can be performed in the CIRT Lab. Start Impatica, and then add your PowerPoint file(s) and choose the options you want from the interface. Slideshow Tab: Include Playback Controls (yes) Selecting this option will create buttons to allow the viewer to control the playback of your presentation. Media Tab: Wait for Sound (no to both) At end of animation With this option selected, presentation advancement will be delayed until the current animation s sound has been played in its entirety. At end of slide Selecting this option causes slide transitions to be postponed until the current slide s transition sound has finished playing. Animation Playback Specify which version of PowerPoint you wish to mimic. Page 3
Make All Animations Automatic (no) Selecting this option will cause Impatica for PowerPoint to override the animation on mouse click setting of PowerPoint. If this option is selected, all animations will occur automatically, without waiting for a mouse click. Make Hyperlinks Open New Window (yes) If this option is selected, all hyperlinks to URLs will open a new browser window and display the desired page within the new window. Otherwise, the target URL will appear in the current browser window and replace its content, including the Impatica presentation. Extra Output Files Tab: Generated Supported Files Select Zip Package for upload to Blackboard. Exported Notes Select HTML file or Plain text file. When you are done selecting Conversion Settings, click Impaticize. Page 4
Set up Your Blackboard Course: The first time you add an Impatica file to Blackboard, you will need to set up a folder in Course Files. All Impatica files for the course will be added to this folder and you only need to do this step one time for each course. 1. In your Course Control Panel Menu, click Files > Course ID to open the Course Files area. 2. Click Create Folder. Type Impatica for the Folder Name and click Submit. 3. Click the icon under Permissions to access Permissions. Page 5
4. Mouse over Select Roles and click All Roles. On the Add All System Accounts page, make sure Read is checked and click Submit. 5. Make sure All Users with System Accounts has Read checked. Page 6
Add Impatica Files to Your Blackboard Course Files Area: 1. In Course Files, click the Impatica folder to open it. 2. Click Create Folder and add a folder for your content (create a separate folder for each Impaticized lecture). 3. Click the link for the new folder to open it. 4. Mouse over Upload and click Upload Package. Browse for the.zip file saved from Impatica. Click Submit. Page 7
Three files will be added to your folder. Add Content to Content Area of Blackboard Course: Page 8
1. Select a Content Area from the Course Menu. 2. Mouse over Build Content and select Item. 3. Enter a Name for the Item. Under Attachments, click Browse Course to locate the.html file added to Course Files. Page 9
4. A new window containing your Course Files will open. Click the Impatica folder > Folder for the lecture > then select the.html file by checking the box to the left of the file. Click Submit.
