1 Importing Your Angel Course into Canvas As Cardinal Stritch University prepares for an August 2014 launch of Canvas, our new learning management system, instructors can take the following steps to ensure a smooth transition. Canvas allows any instructor the ability to import an Angel exported zipped file of their course. While the university will be assisting instructors with moving their courses into Canvas during the summer of 2014, many of you will want to move courses from Angel into Canvas prior to the big migration so you may learn Canvas and you may begin editing your course in Canvas. The big migration will bring forward all Angel courses into Canvas from January 1, 2013 to May 15 th, Courses in Angel that occurred before January 1 st, 2013 will not automatically migrate from Angel to Canvas. Use these directions to export any course that you wish to manually bring into Canvas that occurred before January 1 st, Another advantage to moving your courses into Canvas earlier than the big migration is that the courses can stay in an unpublished state while in Canvas which prevents any student from seeing the course until the instructor publishes the course. This feature will allow you to modify, add additional resources, and Canvas elements to your course. Creating an export of your course will provide you with two advantages: a. By exporting your course from Angel, you will have a backup copy of your course. Repeat this for every course you have taught in Angel. b. You can import your course into Canvas and begin checking your course materials and adding additional features and resources to your course. Recommendations for a Good Conversion from Angel to Canvas Remove any duplicate copies of assessments/drop-boxes that you may have set up to accommodate special teams. ANGEL Games (Version 7.2), Syndicated Folders, or Blogs--none of those will be converted. They won't cause any problems in the conversion, they'll just be skipped. All folder names should consist of only alphanumeric characters which means no special characters or slashes in the folder name. Rename folders that contain special characters or slashes in the folder name. Folders in Angel translate into Modules in Canvas so keeping all of your content organized into folders within Angel, saves you from creating new modules in Canvas. It is recommended content in Angel to be organized into folders prior to exporting the course out of Angel. 1

2 Exporting an Angel Course and the LOR Prior to exporting an Angel course, consider the following recommendation: If you import an exported Angel Course into a different LMS such as Canvas, any item linked from the LOR will NO longer work, since the LOR does not exist within Canvas. In the image below, the item has the link icon next to the title which indicates the item lives within the LOR but was linked to the course. If you do link items from the LOR into your Angel Course, follow these steps: Locate any item in the LOR that was linked to your Angel Course and copy the item into your Angel Course. Do this process PRIOR to exporting your Angel Course. The advantage to doing this process is that you only have to export your course out of Angel once and that all of your files from your LOR are saved inside of your Angel Course exported zipped file. Export your LOR (enter the LOR > Manage Tab > Export Console > Angel Format). This function creates a zipped file of the contents of the LOR. Do this so you have a copy of your LOR for your own records and safe keeping. Export your Angel Course and keep a copy of the zipped file that is produced as a backup copy of your Angel Course. See the next page for directions. To Export an Angel Course: 1. Login to Angel. 2. Open your course. Make sure the course you select to export contains the latest content edits and the most accurate course content. 3. Navigate to the Manage tab in Angel. 2

3 4. Click the Export Console within the Data Management nugget. 5. Within the Export Course Content window, select Angel Format. This identifies what file type will be exported. 3

4 6. Within the next screen, Angel will prompt you to identify what elements you wish to backup from Angel. It is recommended you leave all items checked. Click Next. 7. Angel will inform you that the course export is being processed. 8. Click the option to Go back to Export Course Content. 4

5 9. You will get an message when the export is complete. Larger classes with additional video and resources will take longer to export. 10. At this point you can navigate to another course to export and repeat the steps above. 11. Once you receive the message that the export was complete, return to the course and navigate to Manage, Export Course Content. The export file will be visible within the Export History table. 12. The zip file within the Export History table is a backup copy of your Angel course. 13. Click the zipped file name. 5

6 14. Within the download file window, leave the default option to Save File selected. Note: Open will not open your course in a Word document and essentially all of the files within the export are unreadable UNLESS the export is opened within a learning management system. 15. Click Ok. 16. The saved file will be visible within a message window that appears after you click OK. Alternatively, you can click the green arrow in the browser window to view current downloads. Navigate to your downloads folder. 6

7 17. To navigate to your downloads folder, select Windows Explorer. 18. Windows Explorer will open. Within the left navigation, select Downloads. 19. Within the Downloads folder, the zipped Angel course will be visible. Save this file to a secure location of your choice. 7

8 20. Right-click on the zipped file and select Send to. Select the device or drive you wish to use. You will need to remember the location of where you saved your exported course so you can IMPORT the course into Canvas. 21. Your course has now been successfully exported from Angel. 8

9 Exporting an Angel course using a MAC When downloading a ZIP file to a Mac using Safari, the ZIP file is sent to the trash and automatically replaced with an uncompressed folder containing the contents of the zipped file. This folder cannot be uploaded to Canvas. There are two actions to choose from to resolve this issue. Before downloading the file, go to the Safari menu in Safari, choose Preferences -> General, then uncheck the item Open Safe Files after Downloading (see below). OR After downloading, locate the original zip file in the trash, move it to the Desktop, and upload the zip file from the Desktop. 9

10 Importing into Canvas Conversion Assistance After the import into Canvas, your Angel course files will appear in various places within your Canvas shell. 1. Assignments are Angel Dropboxes. In Canvas, you can view this content by clicking Assignments in the left navigation bar. 2. Files are all files that you had uploaded to the Angel course, such as syllabi, assignment directions and rubrics. In Canvas, you can view this content by clicking on Files in the left navigation bar. 3. Modules are Angel Folders. In Canvas, you can view this content by clicking on Modules in the left navigation bar. 4. Discussions are Angel Discussion Forums. In Canvas, you can view this content by clicking on Discussions in the left navigation bar. 5. Assignment Groups are Angel Gradebook Categories. In Canvas, you can view this content by clicking on Assignments in the left navigation bar. 6. Wikis are Angel Content Pages. In Canvas, you can view this content by clicking on Pages in the left navigation bar. 7. Quizzes are Angel Surveys and Assessments.
