1 Moving or Adding an Existing Physical Volume The following discussion pertains to adding an existing physical volume, and is based on section 13.6 Moving a volume group to another system of the LVM-HOWTO document, at This discussion assumes that the hardware has already been connected and needs to be installed for use. It also assumes that the Gnome desktop has been installed as it makes use of GUI packages. Install the Logical Volume Management Tool Perform the following steps if the Logical Volume Manager (system-config-lvm) has not been installed. 1. Open the Terminal application (Applications/System Tools/Terminal) and log in as a super-user. 2. At the prompt in the Terminal window enter yum install system-config-lvm to install the Logical Volume Manager. 3. Exit the Terminal application (enter exit at the prompt, or select File/Close Window from the menu bar).

2 Uninstall the Physical Volume Perform the following steps if the Physical Volume to be moved is currently installed on a host system. 1. Start the Logical Volume Management Tool (System/Administration/Logical Volume Management). 2. Select the Volume Group and highlight the Logical Volume to be removed. Click the Edit Properties button at the bottom of the window.

3 3. On the Edit Logical Volume pop-up window un-check the Mount and Mount when rebooted fields only and then click on the OK button. When the following window appears, click the Yes button to continue.

4 4. Open the Terminal application (Applications/System Tools/Terminal) and log in as a super-user. Execute the following command vgchange -an EarthWalk8Data to inactivate the Volume Group(s) on the Physical Volume and prevent access by the operating system.

5 5. Export the Volume Group(s) on the Physical Volume being moved. The Physical Volume may be removed when the system is powered off.

6 Install the Physical Volume Note: These steps assume that the Physical Volume being installed has already been connected to the system. 1. Open the Terminal application (Applications/System Tools/Terminal) and log in as a super-user. 2. List the Physical Volumes on the system (pvscan):

7 3. If the Physical Volume contains exported Volume Group(s) (VGs), they must be imported to the new system. In the above example, the Physical Volume /dev/sdc1 contains an exported Volume Group named EarthWalk8Data, which must be imported (vgimport): A Physical Volume scan should no longer show the Volume Group(s) as exported:

8 4. The Volume Group(s) on the Physical Volume now need to be activated: 5. Start the Logical Volume Management Tool (System/Administration/Logical Volume Management).

9 6. Select the newly added Volume Group, then click on the Edit Properties button at the bottom of the window.

10 7. Modify only the Filesystem fields on the Edit Logical Volume pop-up window appropriately. In this example, the Logical Volume named Data will be mounted as /Data8 and will be remounted automatically upon restarts. Press the OK button to connect the Logical Volume. If the following pop-up window appears, press the Yes button to continue.

11 8. The newly added Logical Volume will now be available for use.
