Connecting to the Eduroam WiFi The following guide illustrates the steps required to configure a Windows XP installation and internet browser ready for Eduroam use.

1 Connecting to the Eduroam WiFi The following guide illustrates the steps required to configure a Windows XP installation and internet browser ready for Eduroam use. Instructions for other versions of the Microsoft Windows Operating Systems will vary and are outside the scope of this document, but the basic settings requirements are the same (ie WPA2, MsCHAPv2,PEAP etc.). For additional information on how to set these up please refer to other setup guides available from other sources. Configuring Wireless Network settings in WindowsXP(SP3) To configure Windows XP for Eduroam access, you will need to perform the following steps:- 1. Ensure your wireless connection is enabled and turned on 2. You should see in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (sometimes known as the System Tray), the wireless icon. (It may or may not already be connected to a network indicated by the red X) 3. Right mouse click on this icon and select Open Network Connections.

In the Wireless Network Connection Properties box that appears, make sure that you select the Wireless Networks

2 4. When the Network Connections dialogue box is displayed, right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and select Properties'. 5. In the Wireless Network Connection Properties box that appears, make sure that you select the Wireless Networks tab as shown. Select the Eduroam entry from the list of preferred networks list box and click the Properties button (If Eduroam is not shown then click on the View available Networks button). Select Eduroam

3 6. Next, in the Eduroam properties dialogue box select the Association tab and make sure that all the selections are as shown below. This tick box must be de-selected Select WPA2 for Network Authentication Select AES for Data encryption

4 7. Change to the Authentication tab and make sure that the same selections are made as shown below. Select PEAP for EAP type Make sure that both of these tick boxes are de-selected When the settings are as shown above, select the Properties button highlighted.

After ensuring that all the settings are as shown above select the Configure button to open the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties box.

5 8. The Protected EAP Properties dialogue box should now appear. Again make sure that the same selections are made as those shown below. This box must be deselected Select EAP-MSCHAPv2 for the authentication method from the drop down list All 3 of these tick boxes must be un-ticked 9. After ensuring that all the settings are as shown above select the Configure button to open the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties box. Here you must make sure that you de-select the Automatically use my windows login name. Make sure this tick boxes is de-selected 10. To apply the settings click the OK button in all 4 of the open dialog boxes.

Configuring Internet browser settings Your equipment may be configured to use your organisation s internet PROXY service, either as an authentication mechanism or, simply to reduce bandwidth.

To use the Eduroam service at University College Falmouth you will need to disable any such proxy settings. Below are instructions on how to clear the proxy settings for two popular browser platforms. Please remember to note any specific settings you change as you may need to restore them when you return to your home organization. Removing proxy settings for Internet Explorer Start Internet Explorer and under the Tools menu select Internet Options..

7 In the Internet Options dialogue that follows select LAN settings as shown below. From the Local Area network (LAN) Settings dialogue box which follows make sure the none of the indicated check boxes is selected. If any are set then you will need to make a note of the settings so that you can restore them when you return to your home organization. All 3 of these tick boxes must be un-ticked Finally to confirm the settings close both of the dialog boxes by click the OK buttons.

8 Removing proxy settings in Firefox. There are many differing versions of Firefox available but the general steps to follow to remove the Proxy settings are outlined below. 1. Start Firefox and from the Tools menu select the Options entry. 2. In the Options dialog box shown below select the Advanced menu followed by the Network tab and click the Settings button as indicated below.

9 3. In the Connection Settings dialog box make sure that the No proxy option is selected as shown below. 4. Close both of the open dialog boxes by clicking the OK button on each.

Connecting to the eduroam WiFi SSID Now that you have configured you equipment for use on eduroam using the above guide you can now connect to the network.

From the bottom right corner of the screen, right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and select View Available Wireless Networks as illustrated below. 1. Next, from the Wireless Network Connection dialog box double click on the eduroam entry as illustrated below. Eduroam will only be shown if it is available.

Click on the pop up and the Enter Credentials dialog will appear. 3. In the Enter Credentials dialog box, input your eduroam user name and password as shown below. Do not enter a Logon domain name The user name you need to enter is your University College Falmouth username followed by your organisational domain which (eg. In the illustration above the username is jb123456). Please note that although this looks like an address it is not, entering your E- Mail address will not work (ie. Joe.Bloggs@falmouth.ac.uk). Visitors from other organisations should with their own organisational domain (ie. Exeter University users would enter their Exeter username followed When all the information is entered click the OK button.

Once your credentials have been successfully verified, the Wireless Network Connection dialog box will confirm that your are now Connected to Eduroam and will be able to access the Internet.

You may have noticed in the Enter Credentials dialogue that the Save this user name and password for future use option is grayed out (disabled). This is very misleading as WindowsXP will always remember your credentials for EAP connections (ie Encrypted and protected networks). This means that whilst you are visiting an organisation with eduroam, your equipment will connect without requiring your username and password again. Therefore, if your equipment is stolen the thief will be able to access the internet using your credentials if you do not take additional precautions such as always locking your device when not in use so that it requires your physical presence to regain access to the operating system.
