Once the precision pointer is over the document, click and drag to create the shape. Note: Use the shift key while dragging to constrain the shape. 3 Selecting an Object The white arrow is the selection arrow. MS Publisher 2007 (Graphics) The little dots that appear when an object is selected are called handles. Resize The handles can be used to resize a graphic. When the mouse selection pointer is taken over one of the handles, the selection pointer changes into a resizing pointer (two (2) sided arrow.) When the resizing arrow appears, click and drag to resize the graphic. The yellow diamond control an inside line. Move The graphic can be moved. When the mouse selection pointer is taken over the graphic, the selection pointer changes into a reposition pointer. When the reposition pointer appears, click and drag to move the graphic. Rotate The graphic can be rotated. When the mouse is taken over the green rotating button, it turns into a circle with an arrow. Click and drag in the direction to be rotated. Note: Using the right mouse button to click on an object will bring up a menu of actions allowed for the object chosen. Size and Position can also be changed under the Format Picture or Format AutoShape dialog box. 3
Format AutoShapes The formatting toolbar has several buttons to do the most often used reformatting tasks. Many more options are available on the menu under Format, AutoShape. Lines To choose a different line or border color, or add effects, click on the small down arrow to the right of the Line Color tool (paint brush). To change the type of line/border click on the Line Style button. To make other changes, choose the More Lines button. A dialog box will appear. 4
Fills To choose a different color, or add effects, click on the small down arrow to the right of the Fill Color tool (paint bucket). Fill Effects A dialog box will open allowing the creation of several types of effects: Gradient, Texture, Patterns, Pictures, and Tint. 5
Order Objects placed in a document are placed on layers as if they were transparencies being layered one on another. To change the order of an item, click on it with the right mouse button. Choose Order from the pop up menu, then the desired action. Grouping Individual objects can be grouped into one object. Select the objects to be grouped by clicking on the first object, hold the shift key, and select the remaining objects. Let go of the shift key and use the right mouse button on one of the objects to bring up the shortcut menu. On the shortcut menu, choose Grouping, Group or use the Group button on the bottom of the selected items. The grouped items will have one set of handles. To ungroup the group, click on the Ungroup button at the bottom of the group. 6
Effects 3-D To add a 3-D effect, click on an object then click on the 3-D tool on the formatting toolbar. Changes can be made to the 3-D by selecting the 3-D Settings. Shadows To add a Shadow effect, click on an object then click on the Shadow tool on the formatting toolbar. Changes can be made to the Shadow by selecting the Shadow Settings. 7
Word Art Use the Word Art tool to make stunning headings. 8
Graphics Formats There are several pictures formats, four of the most popular are: JPEG (.jpg) files. The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format is commonly used to display photographs. GIF. Graphic image file format. Web animations are done with images in GIF format. BMP. A standard file format for saving bitmap files in Windows. Windows can display BMP files on any type of display device TIFF (.tif) files. TIFF is a flexible bitmap image format supported by virtually all painting, image-editing, and page-layout applications. JPG is better than GIF for photos as GIF files can only have 256 different colors and JPG can have millions. Clip Art To insert a clip art from the gallery, from the menu choose Insert, Picture, Clip Art Search for the desired topic. Any clip art that appears with a globe in the bottom left corner is on Microsoft s web site and not stored on your computer. Drag the clipart to the document. Pictures There are three ways of inserting a picture into a publication. 1. From the menu choose Insert, Picture, From File. This will insert the picture at the original size. The picture will then have to be resized to fit. 2. From the object toolbar, choose the insert picture tool. Draw a frame to the desired size. A dialog box will then open allowing the selection of a picture. 3. Place a picture in a shape. 9
