Beginning Microsoft Word 2013 Crystal Lake Public Library
Agenda What is it? Do I have it? Why bother? Launch & view Typing time Selecting text Home tab Undo Page layout File backstage Going forward
What is it? Microsoft Word is the word processor made by Microsoft and installed on many computers that use Microsoft Windows. Microsoft Word is one part of a group of programs called Microsoft Office; other Microsoft Office programs are Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Library uses Windows 7
Maybe you have Windows 8?
Or even Windows 10?
Office 365? Subscription service that provides access to Microsoft Office software on multiple computers. The software is always up-to-date and files are stored in the cloud.
Google Docs, Apple Pages, Open Office
Launch and view Double click on Word Together we will identify: Quick access tool bar Command Tabs Home Page Layout File / backstage Ribbon Title bar Status bar Scroll bar Page Views Zoom Control
Quick Access Toolbar Title Bar Command Tabs The Ribbon Rulers Scroll Bar Insertion Point Status Bar Page Views Zoom Control
Insertion Point & Mouse Pointer Insertion point (cursor) a blinking vertical line, shows where the text will go. Mouse pointer This i-bar shows the location of the mouse on the document page This pointer takes over when you move the mouse off the page into a functional area of the screen.
Sample text use this or create your own The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Heavy boxes perform quick waltzes and jigs. Amazingly few discotheques provide jukeboxes.
Word wrap Word wrap: as you type, the text automatically flows from the left side to the right side and then down to the next line and so on. When you fill one line with text, the word processor automatically jumps to the next line so that you DO NOT have to press the ENTER key after each line. ENTER: use the ENTER key only when you want to start a new paragraph or to add spaces between paragraphs.
Editing Text Backspace Key The letter to the left of the insertion point is erased and the insertion point jumps to the left. Delete Key The letter to the right of the insertion point is erased and the insertion point stays put. We ll talk about Undo when we are formatting our document.
Cheating Use the enter key to move to a new line and type exactly this: =rand (8,10) Then press enter
Selecting Text The computer cannot read your mind, so We need to tell the computer exactly which piece of text we want to change by selecting it. Once the text is selected, then we can give our formatting instructions. The changes will only affect the selected text.
Selecting With the Mouse Use the mouse to move your I Bar that you want to select. to the start of the word or phrase Click and hold down your left mouse button and then move your mouse to the end of that word or phrase. Release the mouse button. Your text is now selected.
What s that? Mini toolbar Word knows than when you select text, you are getting ready to make formatting changes. The Mini toolbar appears to put some popular choices right in front of you. A small movement of the mouse will make the Mini toolbar disappear.
Selecting With the Mouse You can also select the text by clicking with the mouse button. Click twice on a word and it selects the word. Click three times and it selects the paragraph. If you selected more of your text than you intended, simply click outside the selection and start again.
Selecting With the Mouse If you need to select everything you have typed the entire document there is a place for you on the Home ribbon.
Selecting with the Keyboard Move the I Bar and click to call the cursor to the start of the word or phrase that you want to select. Hold down the Shift key arrow key. This will select one letter at a time. Don t release the selecting that text. and press the key until you are done You can also select whole lines at a time by using the key and the down arrow key. To select whole words at a time, hold the and Control keys down while pressing the arrow key.
