3 Introduction to Jailbreaking The purpose of this manual is to teach an individual how to jailbreak an ipod. Jailbreaking is for Apple devices and allows the user to install apps that have not been approved by the Apple store for free. It also allows the user to make their device more customizable. This is perfectly legal procedure however, if one does jailbreak their device it may void the warranty. Jailbreaking Terminology Jailbreaking: Allows the user the device to install apps that have not been approved by the Apple store and makes the device more customizable. Backup: Making a copy of all the data you need on the device Brick: The device completely shuts down, the screen goes black and you cannot do anything with it. Bricking usually requires you to take it to an outside vendor to get it fixed. While jailbreaking and rooting is an easy procedure there is always a possibility for the device to brick. Materials Needed for Jailbreaking A 4 th Generation ipod A computer with internet connection Wifi USB cable compatible with the device Charger Safety Warnings for Jailbreaking Though this is a legal and often very easy process, a number of things can happen to your device including: A virus can infect your computer by downloading the software. Download only from trusted websites. The device can brick. When a device bricks it is practically useless though it is easy to fix. If your Apple device bricks then take it to the Apple store, you will have to pay to get it fixed. Sometimes hacked devices will lag or spontaneously shut down, this can be fixed by restarting your device or installing the latest version of the hack. Jailbreaking your device will void the warranty so be completely sure you want to go with procedure. 3

4 Step by Step: 4th Generation ipod Step 1: Backup your ipod Before you jailbreak your ipod, you should backup the ipod so any important information will not be lost. Step 1: What you should see when you backup your ipod. How to back up your ipod using itunes: 1. Connect your IOS Device to your computer. 2. Choose File > Devices > Back up. 3. If you're using itunes 10.7 or earlier, right-click the device from the list and choose Backup Now. 4. To verify that the backup finished successfully, open itunes Preferences and select the Devices tab. You'll see the name of the device along with the date and time itunes created the backup. 4

5 Step 2: Find out if your ipod is compatible The only ipod Touch that can be jailbroken after upgrading to is the ipod Touch 4th Generation, and it will be tethered. No other ipod Touches can be jailbroken if they have been upgraded to It is not possible to perform an untethered jailbreak of How to find the ipod version: 1. From the Home Screen, tap Settings > General > About. 2. The software version of your device should appear on this screen. Step 3: Download Redsn0w Redsn0w is the only jailbreak program that can do the tethered jailbreak. You will need version beta 3 or later. Step 3: Where to download Redsn0w. This is a picture of what you should see on the website. 5

6 How to Download Redsn0w 1. Follow the link 2. Click on Window if your computer is using Window, MAC is your computer is a Mac. 3. Click on the blue here to download. Step 3 part 2: This is what you should see to download Redsn0w. Step 4: Download IOS 6 In order to successfully jailbreak, you will first be reverting back to ios 6.0. In order to do this, you will need to download the correct ios firmware for your ipod Touch. Download the file specifically for the 4th Generation ipod Touch. How to download IOS 6 1. Type in the link: into your web browser. 2. Scroll down and click on ipod touch 4 th generation 6

7 Step 5: Run Redsn0w How to run Redsn0w: 1. Extract the.zip file for Redsn0w and run the program. Substep 1: Select Redsn0w 2. If you are using Windows 7, right-click the program select Properties. 3. In the Compatibility tab, check the box next to Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP 4. Once Redsn0w is open, click on the Extras button and then click Select IPSW. 5. Browse for the firmware file that you downloaded in the previous step. It should have a.ipsw file extension. Step 6: Start the Jailbreak Process How to jailbreak: 1. Load the.ipsw file. Substep 1: Load the.ipsw file. 2. Right click and select run as administrator Substep 2: Run as administrator. 3. Click the Jailbreak button on the main screen of Redsn0w. Substep 3: Click the Jailbreak button and wait for the program to process. 7

8 Step 7: Put your ipod into DFU mode DFU mode will allow your ipod to install new operating system software. Redsn0w will provide timers to help with the DFU process. Follow these steps to put your ipod into DFU mode: 1. Hold the Power button on the ipod for 3 seconds. 2. Keep holding the Power button and start pressing the Home button. Hold both for 10 seconds. 3. Keep holding the Home button and release the Power button. After a few moments, Redsn0w should detect the ipod on your computer. Release the Home button once the ipod is detected. 4. If Redsn0w is unable to detect your ipod, repeat the DFU process. Step 8: Wait for Your ipod to Reboot During the installation process, the ipod will reboot twice. Once the installation is complete, you will receive a message in the Redsn0w application on your computer. You can close the program at this point, it will need to be restarted in a moment. Your ipod will reboot again. It may take up to 5 minutes for your ipod to reboot. Step 9: Start the Redsn0w Program Again 1. Click the Extras button and navigate to the ios ipsw file downloaded earlier. 2. Return to the main screen and click the Just Boot button. Step 10: Make Sure Your ipod is Still Connected Follow these steps: 1. Power it down. 2. Click the Next button. 3. Put the ipod into DFU mode again. (see step 8) 4. Release the Home button at the end of the DFU process, before the ipod reboots. Step 11: Start Cydia Once the ipod boots back up, the jailbreak process is complete. You can use Cydia to begin customizing it. Cydia may not appear on your Home Screen. It should appear when searched for on the ipod. Step 12: Perform a Tethered Boot You will need to repeat steps 9 & 10 whenever you reboot your ipod. Once the boot process is complete, you can disconnect the ipod from the computer. 8

9 For Version and Older Step 1: Backup Your ipod. Use the same backup instructions from the Step 1: Backup Your ipod section in the beginning of the document. Step 2: Go to the JailbreakMe website on your ipod Open the internet on your ipod and go to JailbreakMe only works on ios and below. Newer versions of ios should use other methods in this guide. Step 2: This is what you should see when you pull up JailbreakMe on your ipod. 9

10 Step 3: Select the "Slide to Jailbreak" button. Once you see that the app "Cydia" is installed on your ipod, your ipod has been jailbroken. It will appear as a pop-up. Step 3: This is what you should see when you are about to jailbreak the ipod. Step 4: Press OK. You will return to your home screen. Cydia will now be included alongside your other apps. You are now free to download unapproved apps and tweaks that aren t allowed on the Apple store. Step 4: This is what you should see next. This is the end product. 10

11 Troubleshooting My Jailbreak fails or the jailbreak tool crashes and quits Before attempting to use this solutions make sure that the device is not passcode locked. Passcode locked devices are known to stall or crash jailbreak utilities. 1. Make sure the jailbreaking tool is supported by the platform and operating system being used. 2. Change USB cable or unplug and plug the device. 3. Check the firmware of the device and make sure it is supported by the tool being used. 4. Delete and re-install the jailbreaking tool. 5. Run your tool as an administrator or try using a different computer if possible. 6. Reset device to factory settings. Go to Settings GeneralResetReset all settings. Data will remain intact but the settings will reset to factory settings. 7. If step 5 fails backup the device then wipe the device to factory, restore and try to jailbreak again. This will erase all content and settings The jailbreak seems to have worked but can t get Cydia to install (Network error) 1. This happens a lot with tools like Redsn0w which require the launch of their icon to obtain Cydia. Go to SettingsGeneralNetworkand turn on VPN. (If VPN asks for a password.) 2. If enabling VPN does not give an error message or reboot the device reset network settings. Go to SettingsGeneralResetReset all Network Settings then try turning VPN on again. 3. If none of the previous solutions work the best possible solution is to clean restore your device after you back up all your data. Jailbreak then restore your information. Other possible errors Server refuses connection: The server is down and there is nothing the user can do about it but wait for it to come back online. The libactivator package file cannot be located: The user may need to manually fix the package. If the user is unable to install anything from Cydia the network must be reset Go to SettingsGeneralResetReset all Network Settings. 11
