1 2 Alphbetic Input nd Ties (Musicl Exmple: Finlndi by Jen Sibelius) 19 Ech chpter in section I will introduce specific set of nottion skills. I thought it would be fun to lern how to use Sibelius by writing piece by Jen Sibelius. And so the first piece of music you ll enter into Sibelius is single-line exmple from his composition Finlndi. First, look t the finl printout of Finlndi, below. Your gol is to reproduce this using Sibelius. How to strt new score: 1. If the Quick Strt screen is not visible, go to the File menu nd choose Quick Strt. 2. In the Quick Strt window, click on the Strt A New Score option nd click OK. You cn lso strt new score by clicking the icon t the upper-left-hnd corner of the Sibelius toolbr. 3. In the New Score window under Mnuscript Pper, choose Blnk. 4. Click the Chnge Instruments button. 5. Select All Instruments > Others > Unnmed (Treble Stff). book.indb 20

3 Alphbetic Input nd Ties CHAPTER 2 6. Click the Add To Score button. Be sure there is n instrument listed in the column to the right, or you will hve blnk piece of pper without ny lines or spces. 7. Click OK. 8. This returns you to the New Score window. Click Next. 9. Select the nottion style Unchnged. 10. Click Next Select 4/4 under Time Signture. 12. Click Next. 13. Under Key Signture, select F mjor (one flt). 14. Click Next. 15. Enter Finlndi under Title, Jen Sibelius under Composer/Songwriter, nd Entered by [your nme] under Lyricist. When you wnt to move from one entry re to nother in dilog box, just press the Tb key on the computer keybord. book.indb 21

4 CHAPTER 2 Sibelius Before you click Finish, press the Previous button to be sure tht you selected the right choices. Tking your time t this stge will sve you mny hedches. Once you click on Finish, you cn t return to the Score Setup windows except to strt over. 17. Click Finish. Sibelius cretes file with ll the informtion you entered, nd it cretes pge or so of empty mesures. Mgnetic Lyout Sibelius 6 hs introduced revolutionry new feture clled Mgnetic Lyout. It is wonderful feture tht utomticlly moves objects to void collisions. For now, just be sure it is turned on. To see if it is on, click on the Lyout menu. If Mgnetic Lyout is checked, it is on. If it is not checked, select it from the Lyout menu. Displying Mesure Numbers on Every Mesure Before you lern how to delete the extr mesures, stop nd mke chnge to the wy the music is displyed. When I work in score, I lwys disply the mesure numbers so tht I don t get lost. Even with lrge computer monitor, the mesures cn be confusing. Sibelius hs n option tht shows the stff nmes nd mesure numbers. They will not print, but the reference numbers re helpful to see during note entry. From the View menu select Stff Nmes nd Br Numbers. Deleting Brs Sibelius will utomticlly crete brs (mesures) when new file is creted. Sometimes not enough brs re creted for the score. Brs cn be dded nd deleted from the score. In this cse, Sibelius creted 80 brs of blnk music. Since Finlndi hs 24 mesures, brs need to be deleted from the score. book.indb 22

5 Alphbetic Input nd Ties CHAPTER 2 To select br, click on it. To delete br, 1. Hold down z (Mc) or CTRL (Win), nd click inside mesure 25. This will plce double box round the mesure. 2. Press the Delete key on the computer keybord to delete just br How to delete rnge of brs: 1. Zoom out so tht you cn see the entire score. 2. Hold down z (Mc) or CTRL (Win), nd click inside mesure 25, the left-most mesure of the block. 3. Relese the z (Mc) or CTRL (Win) key. 4. Press the Shift key nd click inside the lst mesure in the score. This will highlight group of mesures with the double box. 5. Press Delete on the keybord to remove block of mesures. book.indb 23

6 CHAPTER 2 Sibelius 24 Be Another creful not to delete the first br of score. All of the titles tht re entered using the New Score setup re connected to mesure 1. If you delete mesure 1, ll of the titles t the top of the pge will go wy with it nd will hve to be reentered. wy to delete brs is to select them the norml wy by clicking in br. Hold down the Shift key to select group of brs. If you press Delete, it removes the entries in the brs but leves the empty brs in the score. If you hold down z (Mc) or CTRL (Win) nd press the Delete key, Sibelius will sk you if you relly wnt to remove the selected brs from the score. Adding Brs Sibelius utomticlly cretes new brs s nottion is entered. You cn dd brs to the end of the score or insert them in the middle of the score. To dd brs to the end of the score, choose Crete > Br > At End or use the shortcut z + B (Mc) or CTRL + B (Win). To insert br in the score, select the br before the br to be dded, nd then choose Crete > Br > Single. Entering Nottion by Typing the Letter Nmes The fstest wy to enter nottion in Sibelius is to use MIDI keybord or MIDI keybord controller. This option will be discussed in chpter 4. If you do not hve MIDI keybord, then the next fstest wy to enter notes is through lphbetic input. Using the mouse to click in notes, s introduced in chpter 1, is the slowest option. The fstest wy to enter music using the computer keybord is to use your left hnd over the letters A through G nd your right hnd over the numeric keypd. Don t use the mouse t ll. With prctice, your entry speed will increse drmticlly. book.indb 24

7 Alphbetic Input nd Ties CHAPTER 2 Lptops do not typiclly hve numeric keypd. Users hve couple of options. The best option is to purchse USB keypd from ny computer store nd plug it into USB port. The next best option is to use your left hnd to type the letter nmes nd use your right hnd on the numeric keypd to click on the desired durtion. 25 Consider purchsing the Sibelius customized computer keybord. It cn be used with desktop computers nd lptops by plugging it into USB port, nd it hs lot of gret fetures including color-coded shortcut keys nd it hs numeric keypd. Check out dditionl informtion t How to enter nottion vi lphbetic input: 1. Be sure tht the first mesure of the piece is visible. If it isn t, use the nvigtion br or drg the music with the mouse to mke it visible. 2. Ensure tht nothing is lredy selected by pressing the Esc (Escpe) key, the upperleft key on the computer keybord. The cursor should be blck, not blue. 3. Click inside mesure 1 to select it. A blue rectngle will pper round the mesure. 4. Press the letter N on the keybord to input notes. This cn lso be selected by choosing Input in the Notes menu. 5. Next, select the qurter-note vlue from the Keypd. If the Keypd is not visible, select Keypd from the Window menu or click on the Keypd icon in the toolbr. 6. Plce your right hnd over the numeric keypd (if your computer hs one). Press the qurter-note vlue (the number 4) on the keypd. You cn lso click on the qurter-note vlue with your mouse. Whichever method you use, be sure to select the note durtion before you enter the pitch. Do Plce not use the numbers cross the top of the keybord to select the vlues. These numbers re used to enter hrmony nd will be covered in chpter 3. your right hnd over the numeric keypd, with your middle finger over the number 5. With prctice you will begin to feel the different note durtions: 4 = qurter, 3 = eighth, 5 = hlf, nd so forth. 7. To enter qurter rest, with the qurter-note vlue selected on the keypd, press the number 0 (zero) on the keypd. 8. Since the next three notes re ll qurter notes, type the letters A, G, nd A. book.indb 25

8 CHAPTER 2 Sibelius To enter the Bb dotted hlf note, first select the hlf- note vlue by pressing 5 on the numeric keypd. Add the dot by pressing the period on the keypd. Type the letter B on the keybord. Sibelius ssumes you men Bb since it is in the key signture. You cn override tht by selecting the pproprite ccidentl on the Keypd. 10. To enter the A qurter note in br 2, press the number 4 on the keypd with your right hnd, nd type the letter A with your left. Getting the hng of it? Correcting Mistkes (Edit nd Undo) When I m entering nottion nd mke mistke, I usully use the Undo commnd to fix it. You cn ccess the Undo commnd from the Edit menu. You cn lso click on the Undo icon on the toolbr t the top of the screen, or you cn use the shortcut key z + Z (Mc) or CTRL + Z (Win). Unfortuntely, the Undo commnd does not work fter you ve printed out n rrngement nd your ensemble plys wrong note! Entering the Nottion in Mesures 3 through 8 1. Enter the G nd A qurter notes on bets 1 nd 2 of mesure To enter the F dotted qurter note, select the qurter-note vlue nd press the period on the Keypd before entering the note. Enter the G eighth note to complete mesure In mesure 4, enter the G qurter note. To enter the A dotted hlf note tied to mesure 4, select the hlf-note vlue nd press the period to dd dot. Type the letter A. 4. After entering the A, press the Enter key on the Keypd to dd the tie. Ties re lwys dded fter note hs been entered. Another wy to utomticlly dd tie is to enter note vlue tht is too lrge for the br. For exmple, if you enter whole note on bet 2 of br 12, Sibelius will utomticlly crete dotted hlf note nd tie over the br to qurter note. Very cool, indeed! 5. Enter the rest of the nottion in mesures 5 through Also enter the nottion in mesures 9 through 16. Remember to enter rest, select the pproprite durtion nd press the 0 key on the numeric keypd. book.indb 26

9 Alphbetic Input nd Ties CHAPTER 2 Be sure to enter ll ties when you re entering the nottion. Ties re entered using the tie vlue on the first Keypd lyout. Slurs re hndled differently nd will be covered in chpter Copying nd Psting with Shift-click You cn sve huge mount of time when entering nottion by using copy nd pste. Note tht mesures 17 through 24 re identicl to mesures 9 through 16 except for the lst two notes. For this exmple, you will copy the mesures. Then in the next exmple, you ll use repitch to chnge the lst two notes. How to copy nd pste: 1. Press Esc to cler the cursor so tht it is blck, not blue. 2. Click inside mesure 9 on the lines nd spces to highlight it. 3. Hold down the Shift key nd click the mouse in mesure 16. Click inside the lines nd spces, not on note. 4. Sibelius hs specil shortcut to copy wht is selected to the very next br: press the R key on the keybord to repet whtever hs been selected. Check it out, this is shortcut to remember! book.indb 27

10 CHAPTER 2 Sibelius Correcting Pitches 28 There re severl wys to chnge pitches once they hve been entered. For exmple, the lst two notes in Finlndi need to be chnged from two As to two Fs. Chnging the pitch: 1. Press Esc. 2. Click on the A eighth note t the end of br Press the Down Arrow key on the keybord two times to move the pitch to n F. 4. Press the Right Arrow key to move the cursor to the whole note in br 24, nd press the Down Arrow key two times. Sibelius offers nother helpful wy to chnge pitches without ltering the durtion of notes. This technique is especilly helpful if you copy first prt to second, nd then wnt to chnge only the pitches. Before trying this option, undo the steps you just took in the previous exmple. Undoing Multiple Steps You cn undo multiple steps by pressing the Undo commnd severl times. You cn click on the Undo icon t the top of the pge, or you cn use the shortcut key: z + Z (Mc) or CTRL + Z (Win). It is lso possible to view the list of steps tht hve been done nd delete them in one simple click of the mouse: 1. From the Edit menu select Undo History. 2. Click the mouse t the desired loction in the list in this cse, t the beginning of the lst few steps tht you took to move the A pitches to F. 3. Click OK. book.indb 28

11 Alphbetic Input nd Ties CHAPTER 2 Re-Input Pitches Using the Re-input Pitches option is nother excellent wy to chnge pitches without ffecting the note vlue: Press Esc. 2. Select the first note in the pssge tht you wnt to repitch in this cse, the A eighth note in mesure From the Notes menu choose Re-input Pitches. A dshed cursor line will pper to distinguish repitching from norml note entry. 4. Press the letter F two times on the computer keybord. You cn lso enter the notes from MIDI keybord (this will be introduced in chpter 4). Entering Expressions (Dynmics) Sibelius hndles text in vriety of wys. Dynmics nd similr instructions to plyers, such s legto, mrcto, nd so forth, re indicted in itlics nd re entered below the stff. You cn esily move nything on the screen by clicking-nd-drgging it. In this exmple, there re severl dynmics tht re entered using the Expression option. How to enter dynmics: 1. Press Esc (just in cse something is lredy selected). 2. Click on the qurter note on bet 2 in br 1. It will turn blue. 3. From the Crete menu select Text, nd from the submenu select Expression. 4. A blinking cursor will pper below the stff. Right-click (CTRL-click if you re using onebutton Mc) on the cursor to disply the list of dynmics nd other mrkings. Drg to the mp (mezzo pino) dynmic mrking. Relese the mouse button. 5. 12 CHAPTER 2 Sibelius Since the expression is blue, you cn drg it to ny loction on the screen. Or you cn use the Arrow keys on the keybord to move it more precisely. 7. Press Esc to cler the selection. Entering Expressions Using Shortcut Keys The fstest wy to enter expressions is to use the shortcut keys. Remember, the letter E stnds for Expression. How to enter expressions with shortcut keys: 1. Press Esc (to cler nything tht could currently be selected). 2. Click on the first C qurter note in mesure 9 to highlight it. 3. Use the shortcut commnd for entering expressions: z + E (Mc) or CTRL + E (Win). 4. Right-click the mouse on the blinking cursor nd select the dynmic mrking mf (Mc users with one-button mouse should press the CTRL key nd click the mouse. Get rid of tht one-button mouse before you strt chpter 3). 5. Press Esc to enter the dynmic. Press Esc gin to cler the mf selection. 6. Repet the bove steps to plce the f (forte) mrking under the first C in mesure 17. You cn lso type the letters by following the bove steps (1, 2, nd 3), nd then holding down z (Mc) or CTRL (Win) nd typing the dynmics ff, mp, nd so forth. They will pper in the correct (itlic nd bold) font. Plybck for Proof Listening Music entered in Sibelius cn be plyed using either MIDI keybord, the computer s internl sound source, or softwre synthesis. Be sure tht you hve configured your MIDI setup s described in the Sibelius mnul. How to ply bck piece: 1. Press Esc. 2. Check to see if the Plybck controls re on the screen. If not, press the Arrow on the toolbr t the top of the screen or select controls from Plybck under the Window menu. book.indb 30

13 Alphbetic Input nd Ties CHAPTER 2 3. Press the green Ply Arrow, or simply press the Spcebr to strt the plybck. Listen for mistkes. It is much esier to her ny incorrect notes when listening. 4. Press the Squre to stop plybck, or press the Spcebr. 5. Press the Ply button locted in the menu br t the top of the screen. 6. You cn lso press the Spcebr to stop plybck (the plybck controls do not need to be on the screen). It is helpful to hve them on the screen so you cn see the loction of the plybck green line. 31 The plybck zoom is controlled by the settings in the Preferences window. When you press Ply, the size of the plybck cn be chnged. Mc: go to the Apple menu nd choose Preferences; Win: go to the Edit menu nd choose Preferences. Then click on the Plybck option. The zoom percentge for plybck is controlled in this window. I usully set the plybck to 100%. Remember, during plybck you cn control the zoom by using the shortcut of holding down z (Mc) or CTRL (Win) nd pressing minus ( ) to zoom in or plus (+) to zoom out. Zooming In nd Zooming Out Review the file before printing. First view the entire document on the screen. You cn zoom in nd out of the score t ny time selecting percentge from the menu t the top of the screen. A fster wy to zoom is to use the shortcut keys: Mc: Hold down z nd press the plus (+) key multiple times to zoom in (bigger) nd the minus ( ) key to zoom out (smller). Windows: Hold down CTRL nd press the plus (+) key multiple times to zoom in (bigger) nd the minus ( ) key to zoom out (smller). This will not ffect the size of the printed music, just the onscreen disply size. book.indb 31

14 CHAPTER 2 Sibelius Centering the Music in Pge View 32 How to center music in the window: 1. Press Esc so there is nothing selected. 2. Click on the white re of the pge. The rrow cursor will turn into hnd. 3. Drg the score up or down. Don t click on the stff, becuse tht will move the stff position. You cn lso use the Nvigtor window, usully displyed on the bottom left of the window. If the Nvigtor window is not visible, it cn be turned on from the Window menu by selecting Nvigtor. 4. Click inside the Nvigtor window to scroll the score. 5. Use the shortcut keys to toggle the Nvigtor on nd off: Option + z + N (Mc) Alt + CTRL + N (Win) Mesures per Line Unless you tell Sibelius otherwise, the progrm will utomticlly formt the number of mesures per line ccording to the density of the nottion, lyrics, nd other score mrkings. In this cse, Sibelius grouped the mesures to 7 mesures per line in lines 1 nd 2 nd 5 mesures per line in 3 nd 4. Often you will wnt to customize this for exmple, to crete four mesures per system. How to chnge the number of brs per line: 1. Press Esc. 2. Click on the brline t the end of mesure 4 to select it. It will turn purple. 3. Press Return (Mc) or Enter (Win) to move mesure 5 to the next line. You cn lso ccess this option from the Lyout menu by selecting Brek nd then System Brek. 4. Click on the brline t the end of mesure 8. Press Return or Enter to move mesure 9 to the next line. 5. Repet the bove steps nd brek the system fter mesures 12, 16, nd 20. If piece hs not been sved to disk, it cn be lost due to power filure or computer crsh. I like to use the sying, When you smile, sve. In other words, if you ccomplish something you like, sve it! I try to sve every 16 mesures or every pge of music. Sving frequently is hbit tht you will be gld you hve dopted. How to sve file: 1. From the File menu, choose Sve. 2. Nme the exmple Finlndi, nd sve it to your hrd drive. 3. To print the file, from the File menu choose Print. book.indb 33

16 CHAPTER 2 Sibelius Sibelius Preferences 34 Sibelius offers wide rnge of options with regrd to sving files. Sibelius cn be told to utomticlly bck up t ny time intervl. Sibelius cn lso utomticlly crete second copy or bckup of the piece you re working on. How to select the Sibelius Preferences: Mc: From the Sibelius menu, select Preferences nd then click on Files. Windows: From File menu, select Preferences nd then click on Files. These re the Sibelius defult settings. The progrm is set up to sve utomticlly every ten minutes. It plces copy in the AutoSve folder on your hrd drive nd does not ffect the file you re working on. It is not bd ide to utomticlly sve, especilly if you re not in the hbit of sving your work frequently. Mking bckups is lso good ide. Sometimes the file you re working on will become corrupted, nd the bckup cn then be rel sset. All of these options cn be selected nd then re retined even fter you quit the progrm. Congrtultions! You hve successfully entered nd printed your first Sibelius exmple. Use duplicting mchine if you need more thn two or three copies of piece of music. It is usully cheper to print one copy nd then use duplicting mchine to mke dditionl copies thn it is to print lrge number of copies from the computer. Plug-ins Sibelius comes with host of plug-ins designed to sve you time when performing specific tsks. Plug-ins cn be pplied to prt or ll of the score. In this chpter the solfeggio plug-in will be used. book.indb 34

17 Alphbetic Input nd Ties CHAPTER 2 How to pply the solfeggio plug-in to the score: 1. From the File menu choose Sve As, nd then renme nd sve copy of Finlndi. Nme it FinlndiSolF. 2. To select the entire score, from the Edit menu choose Select nd then Select All. You cn lso use the Sibelius shortcut: triple-click the mouse (click quickly three times in row) inside the lines nd spces in ny mesure. 3. From the Plug-ins menu choose Text, nd then Add Tonic Sol-F. 4. In the Add Tonic Sol-F window, I usully uncheck the buttons next to Add Rhythmic Mrkings nd Notte Slurs.
