1 idvd Authoring Program idvd 7.0 is the standard DVD authoring program on all PSU Macs as of Fall The interface has changed slightly from previous versions and the media browser is better integrated to work with iphoto, itunes, and imovie. This document will assist you with using idvd 7.0 to author your edited movie to a DVD playable on any DVD player or computer with a DVD drive. idvd 7.0 Menu Workspace Interface This is the workspace for the DVD Menu. You will do all your authoring, customizing, and testing via this interface

2 MENU WORKSPACE: This is where you edit and customize your DVD menu. DROP ZONE: Pictures or Video added to a Drop Zone will customize your menu. ADD BUTTON: Press to add buttons for movies, submenus, or slideshows. MAP VIEW BUTTON: This button will display the map of your menu items and chapter divisions of your movie. MOTION BUTTON: This button shows you a preview of the menu s animation and audio including the once-played shaded area. PREVIEW BUTTON: This button allows you to preview your DVD movie, opening a separate window, with a remote control interface, much like Apple s DVD player. VOLUME SLIDER: This slider allows you to adjust the volume level for your preview. This does NOT adjust the volume of the menu as it will actually be played once burned. That adjustment can be made under the Menu button, described below. BURN BUTTON: Clicking this button will allow you to burn your completed DVD project. First, a pop-up notification will ask you if you are ready to burn, and will also alert you to any warnings or problems with your project. THEMES: Clicking on this button will display a list of themes for your menu. Any theme that has the picture of the motion man button in the lower right hand corner designates a theme that has motion/animation. Changing Aspect Ratio Clicking on many of these themes will cause a pop-up notification to appear, asking you to Keep or Change the Project Aspect Ratio. This pop-up occurs because idvd supports widescreen video. If you choose Change, idvd will change the aspect ratio of your movie project, stretching the video, as well as the DVD menu. Unless you shot your movie project in widescreen format (16:9), you will want to choose Keep. Apply Menu Family You may receive a pop-up asking you if you want to apply the Theme Family to your menu. This means that your main menu as well as your scene selection menus will also change to correspond to the chosen theme. If you want your scene selection menus to be a different theme than your main menu, choose No. Older Themes Above the list of themes is a drop-down menu that will allow you to select themes from previous versions of idvd. To see them all, select All.

3 BUTTONS: This allows you to change the format of your menu buttons. MEDIA: This displays three tabs of the Media Browser: Audio, Photos, and Movies with which you can search your GarageBand, iphoto, itunes, and imovie Events folders for any audio, photos, or videos you want to add to your menus. Exporting your imovie 06 Project to idvd Once you have finished editing your imovie Project and are ready to burn it to a DVD, you can use idvd to make your project a playable disc with menus and chapters. 1. Open your finished project in imovie. 2. Click the menu heading Share 3. From the list, choose idvd. In a few seconds idvd will launch and you will begin being able to customize you DVD as described below.

4 Exporting your imovie 08 Project to idvd The export process is similar in imovie 08 but you need to manually select the project from within idvd Media Browser 1. Open your imovie 08 Project. 2. Click the menu heading Share. 3. From the list, choose Media Browser. 4. You will now be able to import this from within idvd. 5. Launch idvd. And then select Create New Project. 6. Choose a Menu Theme from the Theme List. 7. Select your imovie08 video from the Media Browser and drag it to the menu. (This assumes that you have already Shared to the Media Browser from within imovie 08). If importing a QuickTime.mov file from a different location on the disc, select Import Video from the File Menu.

5 8. Preview the DVD. If this is acceptable, you are ready to Burn the DVD. 9. Press the Burn Button and Follow the Directions. Customizing a Theme By Adding Photos or Videos to Drop Zones In many of the themes in idvd, you can customize your menus by adding images and

6 video clips from your project by using Drop Zones. To add video clips from your imovie project: 1. In imovie, choose a video clip from the Shelf Area or Timeline. 2. Switch to idvd and position its window so you can see the Drop Zone in idvd while imovie is in the foreground. 3. Back in imovie, click on the clip and drag it into the desired Drop Zone. Note: If a clip has been split, the entire, unsplit clip will play in the DVD menu since idvd pulls from original footage. It may be necessary to create a specific DV clip using QuickTime Pro. To add photos to your Drop Zones:

7 If you have photos in your iphoto library: 1. Click on the Media button 2. Click on the Photos Tab. 3. Find the image and drag it into the desired Drop Zone in the Menu Preview Pane. If your photo is in another folder: 1. Using the Mac Finder, open the folder where your image is stored. 2. Switch to idvd and position its window so you can see the Drop Zone in idvd while your picture s folder is in the foreground. 3. Back in your folder, click on the image and drag it into the Drop Zone. Changing Titles 1. Click on the Title within your Menu Preview Pane. 2. When the boundary box appears, click on the title a second time. The text will become

8 highlighted. 3. Type the name you prefer for the title and click outside the title area to accept the change. 4. If you wish to rearrange the positioning of your title or submenus titles, click on the Title and Drag to the new position. You can also change the look of a button by selecting buttons and one of the many choices listed.

9 1. To add a soundtrack to a menu, click the menu info button. This opens the Menu Info pane. 2. Next, select the Media button, and then select the Audio Tab. 3. Select a song and drag it to the Audio portion of the Menu Info Pane. 4. Click the menu button and drag the Loop Duration slider to the duration you want the audio file to play. The duration applies to both the audio file and any background movies. (The maximum duration is fifteen minutes.) 5. To add a song from another location, open the folder or location where your song is stored using the Mac Finder. Switch to idvd and click the Menu button. Position its window so that you can see the icon next to the Menu Volume while your song s folder is in the foreground. Click on your song and drag it into the framed icon next to the Menu Volume. Note: Songs must be in AAC, MP3, or AIFF format. For additional help on converting your sound file into one of these formats, ask a consultant. Note: You can add different audio tracks to each submenu, by following the directions above after visiting that submenu through the Menu Preview Pane.

10 Previewing and Burning After your idvd project is completed, save the project one final time. Previewing the Project 1. To get an idea of what the project will look like on a standard DVD player, click the Play Preview button at the bottom of the idvd window. The project will load as though it has been burnt to a DVD. 2. Use the on-screen remote control to navigate menus and control playback. 3. Click Stop, or Exit, to go back to edit your project if needed. Burning the Project 1. When you are finished with the DVD project, click the Burn Shutter-Button. idvd will notify you of any warnings or project problems, and will prompt you to insert a blank DVD. 2. idvd will show each step of the burn process in the progress indicator. When complete, test the disc in a standard DVD player before selecting Cancel in the idvd window.
