1 Setting up Your Brand New ipad for Individual Use A Basic Setup Guide for NEW ipads Instructional Technology May 2012 HCPS Page 1

2 I Have an ipad... So Now What? ipad Setup This setup requires that you be in a location with a wireless network. After moving to an area with wireless access, please proceed with the following directions: 1. You will need to turn on the power. The power button is indicated in the picture to the right. 2. Hold the button down for a few seconds until you see an apple icon appear. Then release. 3. Once the ipad is completely powered up, you will see a gray screen with ipad written in white. HCPS Page 2

3 4. At the bottom of this screen there is a slide button. You will need to touch the screen on the arrow and slide the arrow to the right. 5. Once you do this, you will see the language screen. English should be checked already. Press the arrow key (white arrow with blue background) in the top right-hand corner. 6. Using your index finger, slide from the bottom of the screen to the top in order to move the list of countries until you find United States. Once you have verified this is checked, you may click the Next button in the top right-hand corner. 7. Now you will see Location Services. Press the Enable Location Services button. This will allow applications and maps to find your location anytime you are connected to a wireless network. 8. Click Next. 9. Choose your wireless network from the list. If your network is passwordprotected, you will be prompted to enter the security key. If the network is open, you will be able to proceed. The Next button will become available once you are connected to the network. 10. Click Next. 11.You will see an activation screen for a few moments. This could take up to three minutes. 12.Once it is activated, it automatically shifts to the Set Up ipad screen. 13.Choose Set Up as New ipad and click Next. 14. You must now tap Skip This Step found at the very bottom of the screen. DO NOT choose Sign In with an Apple ID or Create an Apple ID. DO NOT sign in with your personal itunes account. HCPS Page 3

4 15.A popup will appear. Choose Skip to confirm that you are skipping the Apple ID setup. 16.A Terms and Conditions window will appear. Simply tap the blue Agree button. 17.Confirm that you Agree on the popup window. 18. At the Diagnostics screen, choose Don t Send. 19. Click Next. 20. You are now at the Thank You screen. Simply click the Start Using ipad button and off you go! Apple ID Setup You will need to set up an itunes account using your FirstClass address. Please follow these directions in order to set up an account without requiring a credit card: 1. Tap the App Store icon. 2. Wait a few moments for the popup window (seen on the right) to appear. 3. Tap Download. 4. On the Sign In popup, tap Create New Apple ID. 5. On the New Account window, confirm your country and click Next. 6. You will see the Terms of Service. Scroll to the bottom of this screen and tap Agree. 7. Confirm that you Agree again. HCPS Page 4

5 8. Complete the New Account information entering your FirstClass address. 9. Enter your desired password. It must have at least 8 characters, including an uppercase letter and a lowercase letter. It must also have a number. 10.Next you will choose 3 security questions and answers to be used in the event you forget your Apple ID or password. 11.For the Rescue Address, enter another address you use. 12.Enter your Date of Birth. 13.Turn Off the Subscribe to s options by sliding the grey circles to the left. 14.Tap Next. 15.Next to the credit card payment options, tap None. 16.Skip the Code field. 17. Continue filling out the remaining fields using school information. 18.Tap Next. 19. At the verify your account screen, click Done. An will be sent to your FirstClass account. 20. Login to FirstClass and locate your verification . You must click on the verify now link in the to activate your account. 21. Once you click on the link, you will be prompted to sign in with your FirstClass and your newly created password. This is your Apple ID. 22. Finally, you will see a green checkmark thanking you for verifying your address. Close this window and Log Out of FirstClass. 23.On your ipad, locate the search field in the top right-hand corner of the App Store. HCPS Page 5

6 24.Type ibooks into the search field. When you see if listed in the results, tap ibooks and it will take it to your results screen. 25.Locate the section of the results for ipad Apps. 26.Tap the FREE button next to the ipad app for ibooks. 27.Next, tap the INSTALL APP button. 28.On this sign In popup, choose Use Existing Apple ID 29.Sign in with your verified Apple ID, clicking OK. 30.You may see an Edit Home Screen popup, simply click Dismiss. Syncing with a Computer itunes software is important for managing and backing up your ipad. We recommend that after basic setup of your ipad, you begin the practice of syncing your ipad with itunes. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Open itunes on the computer you have designated for syncing. 2. Once the software is opened, you will need to connect your ipad to the syncing cable. The larger side will connect to the base of your ipad (see image). 3. Then you will connect the smaller end (USB) of HCPS Page 6

7 the cable to your computer. 4. Your computer will begin to recognize your ipad. If a little grey window (Camera Connected or Apple ipad) opens, click Cancel. Your ipad will appear within the itunes software on the left-hand side under Devices. 5. A screen will display in itunes for Setup Your ipad. 6. In the Name field, type in a name for your ipad. For example, Ms. Sunshine s ipad. 7. UNCHECK the Automatically sync songs and videos to my ipad and Automatically add photos to my ipad. 8. Click Done. 9.Your ipad will attempt to sync with your computer. 10.You will see an error warning that your ipad is not authorized on your computer. Simply click OK. 11.Go to the Store menu at the top of the window, choose Authorize This Computer. 12.Enter your Apple ID and Password and click Authorize. 13.From the bottom right-hand corner of the itunes window, click Sync to initiate your first ipad sync with your authorized computer. 14.DO NOT unplug or turn off your ipad until the sync is complete. When you get the solid Apple at the top of the window, the sync is complete. HCPS Page 7

8 15.To eject your ipad, you will need to click on the eject symbol next to the name of your ipad. 16.Now you can unplug your ipad. 17.From time to time, you will need to plug in and sync your ipad to keep it up to date. ipad Charging ipads are designed to have a long battery life. However, in order to keep your ipad healthy and ready for use, you will need to charge it when the battery runs low. Follow these directions for charging your ipad: 1. Plug the syncing cable s USB end into the AC adapter. (See to the right.) 2. Plug the larger end into the ipad. 3. Pull out the prongs and plug them into an outlet. 4. Your ipad will light up, illuminating a battery icon. 5. To see the charging status, you may press the Home Button (See on the right). The percentage of charge will display.
