Introduction. Areacomp 2010 Land Area Calculating Converting and Drawing Software For Windows operating systems up to and including Vista and Windows 7 Areacomp is a Windows based application that has been around since the early 1990 s and has always been the fastest and easiest way to draw up any shape and calculate any area. Areacomp works with all sorts of distances and bearings so can work for any plan you are likely to come across. Areacomp also converts distances and areas into a whole range of unit types, metres, feet, inches, links, miles, acres, roods, perches, hectares, the list goes on. Areacomp even lets you overlay your plans onto Google Earth. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 3 of 25
Here s how easy it is to use Areacomp 2010 OK we say Areacomp is so easy to use that anyone from age 8 to 80 can master it in no time. We will start with this plan and run it through Areacomp 2010 from start to finish resulting in a saved file, an Areacomp report and a display on Google Earth The plan is using Feet & Inches for its lengths and Whole Circle Bearings for its angles This can be done in less than 5 minutes Example plan for processing with Areacomp 2010 So lets get started... The 5 minute plan in 10 easy steps. 1. Ten Step Plan - The Icon Click on the icon for Areacomp 2010 to start the program. 2. Ten Step Plan - The Splash The Areacomp 2010 Splash screen appears Just click on it to start the program Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 4 of 25
3. Ten Step Plan - Starting From Scratch The Areacomp 2010 main screen appears with the Opening Options window displayed. Just click on the New Plan button. This means you are starting a new plan from scratch. 4. Ten Step Plan - Pick some Bearings and Distances Next up is the Distance and Bearing Selection screen. We need to tick the Feet & Inches option and the Whole Circle Bearings option. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 5 of 25
5. Ten Step Plan - Punching in the first line of data. We are now ready to start entering data from our plan into Areacomp We will start at the top point and move clockwise around the plan. So the first line will have a length of 154 feet and a bearing of ' 20" This data is entered into the grid on the screen below and the line is draw on the diagram Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 6 of 25
6. Ten Step Plan - Punching in the rest of the data. We now enter the rest of the data for the plan. This is simply a case of clicking on the grid and entering the dimensions exactly as they appear on the plan. You can now see how the diagram on the screen is a match for the plan we are using. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 7 of 25
7. Ten Step Plan - Save to File. Now we just click the File Save toolbar button after adding a description and save the data to file. 8. Ten Step Plan - Preview the Print. Select the Print button on the Toolbar to Preview your Areacomp report. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 8 of 25
9. Ten Step Plan - Printout of the report. Press the Print button when previewing the report and the data goes to your default printer. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 9 of 25
10. Ten Step Plan - Sending Plans to Google Earth. Press the Google Earth button to get the Google Data input window For this example we have opted to place the plan with a 5 metre fence onto the Whitehouse lawn. So there you have it, an Areacomp 2010 plan in 10 easy steps. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 10 of 25
Getting Started in a bit more detail. Areacomp starts up the same as most Windows programs with a simple click on the icon. Areacomp 2010 opening splash screen. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 11 of 25
New Plan or Load File. Areacomp starts up the same as most Windows programs with a simple click on the icon. Areacomp 2010 Opening Options. You then select to either start a New Plan or Load a File. You can also run the Demo here if you have forgotten how easy Areacomp is to use. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 12 of 25
Selection of Distances and Bearings. Areacomp lets you select from different types of distances and bearings. You simply select the units you are using on your plan. Your plan should have a note saying measurements are in feet and inches or something similar to indicate what sort of distance units are being used. Whole Circle Bearings look like this ' 20" or maybe ' and are used on most modern plans. Areacomp 2010 Distance and Bearing selection screen. Decimal degrees would look something like Quadrant bearings are like this N 42 34' 20" E and are common on many older plans. Internal Angles look like ' 20" and are shown at the corner points of your plan. They are widely used in South Australia. Grads are used in European countries and look like this ᶜ There are 100 grads in a right angle so grads can be between 0 and 400. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 13 of 25
Loading an Areacomp Data File. Areacomp loads data files from any directory just like any Windows program. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Areacomp 2010 Load Areacomp Data File screen. With Areacomp 2010 you can also load in older Areacomp files from our previous Windows and DOS versions of the Areacomp program. These files are then automatically converted to the latest version and you just save them again. To load an older Areacomp file just select the Open Areacomp Version 3.0 data file option on the Conversions Menu. Areacomp 2010 Conversions Menu Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 14 of 25
Entering the data from a plan. Once you have selected the distances and bearings to use its time to enter the plans dimensions into Areacomp. For this example we will select Lot 6, in yellow, on the plan below We start entering the data from Point E on the plan above. For this example we will enter the data clockwise around the plan but you can go anticlockwise if preferred. The first bearing is 61 29' 0" and a distance of metres. We just enter it exactly as we read it from the plan and it draws as the line from points 1 to point 2 on the screen below. Areacomp 2010 Entering Data for a Plan. When we get to the third line of bearing is ' 0" and a distance of metres the line appears drawn in the wrong direction. This is a normal occurrence with plans and we just reverse the line direction with a click of the Reverse Line Bearing button below. Areacomp 2010 Reverse Line Bearing Option. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 15 of 25
Completing the data for a plan. Notice that when we reverse Line 3 that the line number becomes -3. The -3 indicates that the bearing was reversed. However the data we entered stays exactly same so that it always matches what is on the plan. As we enter the data for the rest of the plan you can see that lines 4 and 5 have also been reversed. Areacomp 2010 All data lines entered for Lot 6 on page 8 above. While entering your data lines the area and misclosure are always being updated on screen. The area displayed is calculated by adding the last line back to the start of the diagram. The misclosure is defined as the line from the end of your last entered data line back to the beginning of your diagram. The accuracy for a plan is defined as the ratio of the misclosing distance over the perimeter of the plan. In the case above it is 0.095m / m which is 1 part in 37,200. When you have entered the last line the program will determine if the Accuracy is better than one part in 2000 and if so it will say final as in the screen display above. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 16 of 25
Plan Editing Options. When entering your data you have several options for easily making it match what you see on your plan. Areacomp 2010 Edit Menu Options. You can turn the corner numbers on and off. You can reverse the direction of a line to match your plan. You can make curves bend the opposite way to match the plan. You can zoom in and out of the diagram on the screen. You can Delete Copy Paste and Insert lines. You can use the Misclosure displayed on the screen to fill in the last line of the diagram. These options are available on the Edit menu and also by right clicking on a particular line on the diagram. You can also make editing choices by the main Toolbar Buttons at the top of the screen. Areacomp 2010 The Plan Editing Toolbar Buttons. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 17 of 25
Previewing and Printing your Plan. Once you have finished entering the data it s time to preview and print. Areacomp 2010 Printing Options. There are many different ways you can display your Areacomp report. You can print is Colour or Black and White but the Colour option tends to look best even on a black and white printer. The line width can be Thick or Thin You can show numbers on or off at the corners of the plan. The background grid, which is scaled so it s not just decorative, can be switched on or off. You can print the lengths only or bearings and lengths or nothing at all on the sides of the plan. You can print the lengths only or bearings and lengths or nothing at all on the sides of the plan. The Area can be printed in the middle of the plan if required. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 18 of 25

Print of the Plan. Your Areacomp report will printout to your default printer at the current paper size. This means if you are defaulting to A3 sized paper you will get a large print. We find that A4 size is the best result and you can include this in your reports. Areacomp 2010 Printout of Report. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 20 of 25
Overlaying Your Areacomp Plan onto Google Earth. With Areacomp 2010 you can place your plans as an overlay onto the free version of Google Earth. This is done by picking 2 corner points on your plan and getting their co-ordinates from Google Earth and simply entering them into the form in Areacomp First you select the Google Earth button on the toolbar, or press Ctrl G If you move the cursor to where Point 1 lies on Google Earth then you just note down the coordinates on display. Then enter these in the same format into the Areacomp form seen below. The Areacomp Google form will accept the Longitude and Latitude in the formats that Google Earth displays, Decimal degrees or Degrees minutes and seconds. You can select a plain plan or a 3D display with walls. You can even display your Areacomp plan against some major world landmarks such as the Pyramids in Cairo or the White House lawn or the Sydney Opera House Once you have selected your options just press the Start Google Earth button and your plan will appear on Google Earth. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 21 of 25
Displaying on Google Earth. Once Areacomp 2010 has started Google Earth and displayed your plan you can then turn on or off the various layers within your plan such as the walls and outlines. These options are displayed in tick boxes on the left side of the display below Areacomp 2010 Plan displayed on Google Earth. When viewing the Areacomp plan in Google Earth you can right click and save the file in the Google.KMZ format. This file can then be sent to you client or other users of Google Earth. You can also use the built in function to send the image as an to anyone. Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 22 of 25
Converting Plan to other dimensions. Areacomp 2010 User Guide With Areacomp 2010 you can convert your plan to other distance units. This is usually done to change older plans to Metres but you can change the distances any way you like. The Conversions Menu allows changes from your current units to any of the other distance units. Once converted you can reprint your Areacomp report with these new distances The Areacomp Report will tell you that the distances have been converted from the original units. You can see that the distances are now in Feet & Inches Areacomp 2010 User Guide Page 23 of 25
Converting Distances to all other units. The Areacomp Conversions Menu lets you convert any distance value to every other distance unit. This example shows what 1500 feet is equal to in 8 different types of distance units You just click on the distance units you are using and type in a value. Areacomp instantly converts it to all the other units Converting Areas to all other units. The Areacomp Conversions Menu lets you convert any Area value to every other Area unit.
