4 About RocketRAID esata For Mac Specifications What is esata? esata stands for External Serial Advanced Technology Attachment. esata provides faster data transfer rates of up to 3Gb/s (300MB/s) for external devices. RocketRAID esata For Mac The RocketRAID esata For Mac is a PCI-e add-in card with 2 independent 3Gb/s esata connectors. It is ideal for those who need fast, efficient and reliable storage for their Mac Pro systems. It supports booting on Intel based Mac Pro systems. HighPoint s RAID 0, 1, 5 technology provides data security and performance. The dual 3Gb/s esata ports combined with HighPoint s RAID technology provide the high-level of performance required to support multistream HDV, DVCPro HD, XDCAM HD, ProRes 422 and uncompressed SD workflows. Handling Precautions The HighPoint RocketRAID esata For Mac should be handled with care during unpacking and installation. Page 4

5 Hardware Installation Working Safely Inside the Mac Pro 1. For safety reasons, please turn off your Mac Pro and unplug all components. 2. Put the workstation aside to ensure the internal temperature is suitable for installation. Touch the chassis with your hand to release static electricity. 3. Remove the side panel 4. Remove the PCI bracket Loosen the two thumbscrews on that holds the PCI-Express cards in place, and remove the bracket and the port access cover. 5. Plug the RocketRAID esata For Mac into a empty PCI-Express slot. 6. Install the PCI bracket and tighten the thumb screws 7. Insert the side panel and close the latch (Reconnect the external cables and power cord. 8.Turn on the power of your Mac Pro. Software Installation 1. Install the Management Utility 2. Insert CD 3. Welcome to the HighPoint installation program, please click continue 4. Select your desired destination and click continue 5. Enter your Administrator password and click OK 6. After finishing then installation click Restart Note: If you want to boot Mac OS X from your external hard drive you will need to use Carbon Copy Cloner software to clone your Mac OS X disc to the external hard drive. 6 Connecting External Hard Drive 1. Connect the esata cable between the external hard drive and the RocketRAID esata For Mac esata port. Your external hard drive will be ready to access in or on your Mac desktop as a new disk drive volume. New Volume called My Book 2. One of the features in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is Time Machine the external hard drive can be used for Time Machine back up. Setup Boot Mode with External Hard Drive 1. It is possible to use an external drive as a startup disk (Mac OS X boot volume). You will need to download and install Carbon Copy Cloner software from ( to clone the boot volume to the external hard drive. Page 6

7 2. Select the (Source Disk) boot volume with (Mac OS X) and then select the (Target Disk) the External hard drive. 3. When the Clone is complete you can select the new boot volume from Startup Disk to start up your computer. Page 7

8 Configure RAID Mode with Management Utility The Management Utility allows you to setup RAID arrays in data protection mode or in performance tuning mode if you have multiple external hard drives or a Silicon Image (PM) device. RAID Basics RAID 0 (striped disks) provides improved performance over standard single drive configurations. A second external hard drive allows for higher bandwidth and greater throughput. RAID 1 (often called mirroring ) provides protection from disk errors and single disk failures. All data is duplicated (mirrored) on both external hard drives. The hard drive continues to operate so long as at least one drive is functioning. RAID 5 (striped disks with parity) combines three or more disks in a way that protects data against loss of any one disk; the storage capacity of the array is reduced by one disk. 1. 9 2. When you are in the Management Utility you will see Logical Device Information and External Drive Information. Logical Device Information - A part of a physical disk drive that has been partitioned and allocated as an independent unit, and functions as a separate drive altogether. External Drive Information This is physical drive that is attached to your controller. Page 9

10 Creating a RAID Array 2. The Create Array tab will bring you to the create RAID array page. Click to Create Array Page 10

11 Choose the Array Type. Select All of the drives for that RAID array Click on the Create button. Click Create for to create a RAID array Page 11

12 3. If you have a Silicon Image PM (Port Multiplier) enclosure you can choose to create a RAID 5 array. Choose the Array Type - the drop down menu will have RAID 5 selection. Select All of the drives for that RAID 5 array Initialization Method Foreground initialization will help build a healthy RAID 5 array. When Foreground initialization is complete the RAID array will to be formatted with Mac OS X Disk Utility. Click the Create button. Page 12

13 4. Once the RAID array is complete. Use Mac OS X Disk Utility to format the new RAID array. 5. Once Mac OS X Disk Utility has formatted your hard drive it will mount on the desktop. New volume on desktop Page 13

14 6. Updating RocketRAID esata For Mac BIOS Download the BIOS update for the RocketRAID esata For Mac from or and update the BIOS in Mac OS X. Reboot the system once the update has completed. Choose file and then Submit to update Note: To support booting to Mac OS X on the original Apple Mac Pro (Dual Core Xeon 5150) introduced in year 2006 update the RocketRAID esata For Mac to 32bit EFI. The 32bit EFI image is located in your CD. Page 14

15 7. Spare Drives Spare drives will automatically help to rebuild/repair degraded RAID 5 arrays without user intervention. Spare drives should be selected from within Silicon Image PM enclosure. Page 15

16 Setup Boot Mode with Management Utility 1. It is possible to use an external RAID array as a startup disk (Mac OS X boot volume). You will need to download Carbon Copy Cloner software from ( 2. 18 2. Task can be used to setup routine, periodical background-rebuild or verification tasks that will help maintain the integrity of RAID arrays attached to the RocketRAID esata For Mac controller. To setup and schedule tasks highlight the Management menu, and select the Task List function to open Task Management window. Page 18

19 3. Setting will have options for Rebuild Priority select the system resources dedicated to help repair a degraded RAID array. Medium is the default value. Restrict to localhost access only localhost:7402 port is able to access the HighPoint Browser Based RAID Management For Mac utility to make changes and updates. Notification Continuous monitoring and notification for (errors, warnings and events) sent to you when you are away from the external hard drive. Note: To setup notification you will need to Enable Event Notification and update the information with your local settings. Page 19

20 4. SHI (Storage Health Inspector) displays a brief Health summary of each hard disk. You can view S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) data about a particular hard disk to help troubleshoot problems that occur. You can also setup periodically S.M.A.R.T. status checking to send notification messages when S.M.A.R.T. thresholds are exceeded. Page 20
