INTRODUCTION Thank you for purchasing this Blackbird 4K 5x1 HDMI Presentation Switch! This switch features four HDMI inputs, plus a combination input that can accept VGA, Component (YPbPr), or Composite (CVBS) video. It supports HDMI video resolutions up to 4K@60Hz 4:4:4 and is fully compliant with the HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 standards. It supports automatic and manual switching and includes support for automatic EDID management. 4

POWER BUTTON AND LED: Press the button to enter or exit standby mode. The LED illuminates blue when the switch is turned on and illuminates red when in standby mode. 2. IR RECEIVER: IR receiver "eye" for receiving IR signals from the included IR remote control. 3. SOURCE SELECT BUTTONS AND LED INDICATORS: Press one of the buttons to directly select an input. The LED corresponding to the selected input will illuminate. 6

7 Press the AUTO button to toggle automatic switching on or off. When automatic switching is enabled, the LED will illuminate blue. 4. OUTPUT RESOLUTION BUTTONS: Press the buttons to set the output resolution to 1080p, or 720p. The switch/scaler will automatically scale the resolution to match the selected resolution. To select other resolutions, use the included IR remote control or the RS232 control option. Rear Panel 1. OUTPUT: An HDMI video output port and a 3.5mm stereo analog audio output. 2. INPUT: Four HDMI video input ports, a VGA port that is capable of accepting VGA, Component (YPbPr), and Composite (CVBS) video, and a 3.5mm stereo analog audio input 3. CONTROL: A USB port for connecting a USB flash drive for firmware updates, a 3-pin terminal block for connecting to a computer's RS232 serial port, and a 3.5mm jack for connecting the included IR receiver. 4. DC 12V: DC barrel connector for connecting the included AC power adapter. 5. POWER SWITCH: Power switch for turning the unit on or off. 7

8 IR Remote Control 1. POWER SWITCH: Press the button to power the unit on or to put it into standby mode. 2. MUTE BUTTON: Press the button to mute or unmute the audio output. 3. ADJ BUTTON: Press the button to automatically adjust the VGA screen settings. 4. INPUT BUTTONS: Press the HD1~4 and VGA buttons to directly select the input. Press the AUTO button to toggle automatic switching on or odd. Press the arrow buttons to cycle through the inputs. 5. RES BUTTON: Momentarily press the button to access the Resolution screen in the OSD. Press and hold the button for about 5 seconds to set the output resolutions to 720p@60Hz. 6. MENU BUTTONS: Press the MENU button to enter the OSD menu. Press the EXIT button to exit the OSD menu. Press the arrow buttons to navigate the OSD menu. Press the OK button to select the highlighted menu option. 7. VOLUME BUTTONS: Press the VOL- and VOL+ buttons to adjust the volume. The MIC- and MIC+ buttons are unused. AUTO SWITCHING The switch supports both automatic and manual switching modes. When automatic switching mode is enabled, it functions according to the following principles. When a new input signal is detected, the unit will automatically switch to that input. When the unit is powered off, it remembers the last selected input and will return to that input when power is reapplied. If the last input is no longer available, the 8

9 unit will detect all inputs in the order HDMI 1 > HDMI 2 > HDMI 3 > HDMI 4 > VGA and will automatically select the first active input. If the currently selected input is removed, the unit will detect all inputs in the order HDMI 1 > HDMI 2 > HDMI 3 > HDMI 4 > VGA and will automatically select the first active input. VGA INPUT The VGA input can accept VGA, Component (YPbPr), and Composite (CVBS) video signals. The unit will automatically detect the input type and will convert and scale it to the HDMI output. When connecting to a VGA input, use a standard DB15 VGA cable (not included). When connecting to a Component (YPbPr) video source, connect the Red, Blue, and Green plugs to the corresponding video outputs on your Component source device. When connecting to a Composite (CVBS) video source, plug the red connector into the video output (normally yellow). 9

10 INSTALLATION Perform the following steps to install this switch. 1. Ensure that all equipment to be connected is powered off and unplugged from its power source. 2. Using a High Speed HDMI Cable (not included), plug one end into the HDMI input on your display, then plug the other end into the HDMI port in the OUTPUT section on the scaler/switcher. 3. Using the included audio cable, plug one end into the 3.5mm AUDIO jack in the OUTPUT section, then plug the other end into the inputs of powered speakers, a stereo amplifier, or other analog audio device. 10

Using a High Speed HDMI Cable (not included), plug one end into one of the HDMI ports in the INPUT section on the scaler/switcher, then plug the other end into the HDMI output on your video source device. Repeat for up to three additional HDMI video sources. 5. Using a VGA cable, plug one end into the VGA port in the INPUT section on the scaler/switcher, then plug the other end into the VGA output on your computer, laptop, or other device. Alternatively, plug the included video cable into the VGA port in the INPUT section on the scaler/switcher, then plug the other end into the RGB outputs of a component (YPbPr) video source or plug the red connector into the video output jack of a composite (CVBS) video source. 6. Using a 3.5mm audio cable (not included), plug one end into the AUDIO jack in the INPUT section on the scaler/switcher, then plug the other end into the audio output jack on your computer or laptop. Alternatively, using the included audio cable, plug one end into the AUDIO jack in the INPUT section on the scaler/switcher, then plug the other end into the stereo RCA audio output on your component or composite video source device. 7. (Optional) If you want to use your computer for RS232 control of the scaler/switcher, plug one end of a serial cable (not included) into the 3-pin RS232 terminal block in the CONTROL section on the scaler/switcher, then plug the other end into one of the COM ports on your computer or laptop. 8. (Optional) If the IR "eye" on the front panel will be obscured, such as when installing this system into a closet or cabinet, plug the included IR receiver into the IR jack in the CONTROL section on the scaler/switcher, then position the IR "eye" where it can receive IR signals from the included remote control. 9. Plug the DC barrel connector on the included AC power adapter into the 12V DC jack on the scaler/switcher, then plug the adapter into a nearby AC power outlet. 10. Plug in and power on all connected equipment, then start video playback on all video source devices. Verify that the video from each device can be viewed on the connected display and that the audio can be heard. 11

12 OSD MENU Pressing the MENU button on the included remote control accesses the built-in On Screen Display (OSD) menu. Main Menu The Main menu gives access to the Picture, Aspect Ratio, Screen, EDID Switch, Software Update, and Resolution submenus. The Screen submenu is only available when the selected input is set to VGA. Picture Submenu The Picture submenu allows you to control the image Contrast, Brightness, Color, Sharpness, and Tint. 12

13 Aspect Ratio Submenu The Aspect Ratio submenu allows you to set the output aspect ratio to 4:3 or 16:9. Screen Submenu The Screen submenu allows you to set the Horizontal Position, Vertical Position, Size, and Phase. It also allows you to select the Auto Adjust feature, which automatically sets the screen parameters for the optimal display. This screen is only accessible when the VGA input is selected. 13

14 EDID Submenu The EDID submenu allows you to determine how the source device obtains its EDID information. The EDID 1.4 option is for use with devices that conform to version 1.4 of the HDMI specification. The EDID 2.0 option is for use with devices that conform to version 2.0 of the HDMI specification. The EDID AUTO option allows the source device to obtain its EDID information from the connected display. Software Update Submenu The Software Update submenu allows you to update the switch's firmware in the event that an update is made available. To do this, first copy the MERGE.bin file to the root directory of a USB flash drive. Next, plug the flash drive into the USB port on the rear panel. Finally, select the Software Update option from the Main menu. The system will ask you to confirm the update. Select Yes to start the update. 14

15 Resolution Submenu The Resolution submenu allows you to set the output resolution of the switch to a fixed value. You can also select the AUTO option, which automatically sets the output resolution to the best resolution for the connected display. The Resolution sub menu is also accessible by pressing the RES button on the included remote control. RS232 CONTROL In addition to control using the front panel controls and the included remote control, you can control the switch using a third party RS232 control software. The communications parameters for RS232 are: Baud Rate: Data Bits: 8 Stop Bits: 1 Parity: None The switch responds to the following commands. 15
