15 1 Overview and System Requirements for Mid-Range Library Media Manager (MLMM) This section contains these topics: Product Overview 1-1 MLMM Connection Configuration Overview Workstation Hardware and Software Requirements Product Overview Mid-Range Library Media Manager (MLMM) is a product that allows SL500 tape libraries and LTO Gen 3 (M8504) Fibre Channel tape drives to run unattended labeled backups and restores, and it allows manual interaction with a graphical user interface (GUI). It can communicate with an Integrity NonStop NS-series system via TCP/IP. With MLMM, you can schedule backups, label tape cartridges, import or export (enter and eject) tape cartridges to and from the tape library, and load or unload tape drives. The Mid-Range Library Media Manager software requires HP NonStop labeled tape cartridges. In addition to being labeled magnetically, each tape cartridge must have a special external label that displays the volume ID in both a standard OCR format and a bar code System Software Requirements 1-4 Note. Mid-Range Library Media Manager supports SL500 tape libraries that have a storage capacity of a 170 media slots or fewer. 1-1

The system controls the movements of the tape library s robotic arm. HP Integrity NonStop NS-Series Systems The tape library control path can be configured to run on a Fibre Channel ServerNet adapter (FCSA) on an Integrity NonStop NS-series server. Mid-Range Library Media Manager Configuration With SL500 Tape Library The Mid-Range Library Media Manager solution consists of a Fiber control path, plugged into an FCSA and then directly to the tape library. The Control path is the path responsible for tape cartridge movement and library control. The Data path is for tape drives. The Data path is connected to an FCSA. The MLMM GUI interface runs on a PC and uses TCP/IP to communicate with the NonStop system. Commands sent from the MLMM GUI via TCP/IP are intercepted by the Mid-Range Library Media Manager process running on the NonStop system. The process then sends the commands via the control path to the tape library. 1-3

18 Overview and System Requirements for Mid-Range Library Media Manager (MLMM) Workstation Hardware and Software Requirements Workstation Hardware and Software Requirements The workstation must have this hardware and software: Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, or later Internet Explorer 5.0 or later Transaction Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) 128-megabyte RAM when running Windows XP Professional CD-ROM drive 15-inch or larger SVGA monitor 800 by 600 resolution (minimum) 16-bit high color (for best picture quality) System Software Requirements The NonStop NS-series system must have this software: H06.04 or later RVU for the SL500 tape library NonStop TCP/IP to establish a connection between the MLMM GUI, MLMM server, and MLMM clients Subsystem Control Facility (SCF) File Transfer Protocol (FTP) For more information, refer to the SCF Reference Manual for the Storage Subsystem. 1-4

In the SL500 tape library, the maximum number of M8504 tape drives that can be configured using Mid-Range Library Media Manager is

Place the Mid-Range Library Media Manager CD in the CD-ROM drive on your PC workstation. The software loads automatically. During installation, the MLMM icon shown in Figure 2-1 appears. If the installation does not begin automatically, click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and navigate to the MLMM CD files through your CD-ROM drive. b. Click Setup. See Figure 2-2. Figure 2-2. In the FTP dialog box, under HP NonStop Host Information: In the Host box, type the IP address of the NonStop system that is attached to the tape library. In the User box, type your user group and name. You must be a super-group user to transfer files. In the Password box, type the password for the user ID shown in the User box. Note. The password is case-sensitive. 3. Under Host Path Name, type the name of the subvolume where you want the server files written. 4. Click Browse files. 2-4

Navigate to the drive for the CD-ROM when the Open window appears. (See Figure 2-5.) 6. Select all the files in the Server directory as illustrated in Figure Click Open. 2-5

25 MLMM Software Installation for the NonStop NS-Series Server and Client Installation of the Client MLMM Installation of the Client MLMM Overview of the Client The client software is installed on a second NonStop system and is designed to communicate with another NonStop system, which is the host to the tape library device. The server controls the robot on the tape library. The client sends its requests to the server, and the server then sends the request to the tape library. The client can communicate with the tape library only through the NonStop system. Installing the MLMM Client Note. You must configure the Server before the Client. The installation process for Mid-Range Library Media Manager (MLMM) consists of installing the software, transferring files, and configuring the MLMM client to communicate with the selected host. The tape drives can be configured with a NonStop NS-series system. In the SL500 tape library, a maximum of 14 M8504 tape drives can be configured. 2-7

Type RUN CONFIG at the TACL prompt where MLMM is installed. Figure 3-1. RUN CONFIG 2. Type a password and press Enter. Note. The file TSIMMSP is created after the password is entered. If you ever forget your password, purge this file and create a new password. A new TSIMMSP file is then created. A menu scrolls up with configuration options. Figure 3-2 shows the Configuration menu. 3-2

35 Configuring the MLMM Server on the NonStop System Configuration Options SET_SECURITY Type SET_SECURITY to enable or disable security for the MLMM GUI. Figure 3-4. SET_SECURITY The SET_SECURITY command in the configuration sets security either off or on for the GUI. The SET_SECURITY command is set to either Y or N. See Figure 3-4. YES means you want security enabled. A Guardian password is required to access the GUI, and the LMM password is required to perform MOUNT, DISMOUNT, or LABEL and to use the commands on the SERVICES tab. NO means it works with the normal security. No logon is needed to access the GUI, perform MOUNT or DISMOUNT, or label tapes. The MLMM password is still needed on the Services tab. When you access the GUI with SECURITY enabled, you are prompted for a valid Guardian password. 3-5

When you load or unload a tape from a tape drive, you must provide the MLMM password when prompted, or the load or unload does not occur. See Figure 3-6. Figure 3-6. UNLOAD VERIFICATION 3-6

89 MLMM GUI Operations Legend Tab Legend Tab The Legend tab describes what each colored light represents (See Figure 6-4). Panel Tabs The Panel Tabs show the tape drive configuration. The tape library configuration has a list of all the drives that are inside of the tape library. There are ten drives on each panel tab; Panel 1 shows drives 1-10, and Panel 2 shows drives Each drive is labeled with its name (See Figure 6-5). Figure 6-5. Media Library Tab - Panels 6-5

90 MLMM GUI Operations Legend Tab Cap(s) Tab To move a tape cartridge to a tape drive, click a tape label inside of the slot inventory and drag it to a drive. The MLMM GUI will also show the status of each tape drive by indicating a colored light. Refer to the legend tab to see what each colored light represents. (See Figure 6-4 on page 6-4.) Figure 6-6. Media Library Tab - Cap(s) To export a tape cartridge to the Cartridge Access Port, click a tape cartridge and drag it to the right of the tab. To import a tape cartridge from the CAP, click on the desired tape label and drag it to the Slot Inventory on the left. Click Import all to transfer all tape cartridges out of the CAP and into the tape library. Click Refresh CAP to reflect any changes you have made to the CAP inventory. 6-6

Services Tab The Services Tab allows you to perform services on your drives, including bringing tape drives in and out of service and renaming tape drives. To change the status/configuration of a drive or to rename a drive, click that tape drive to see the Drive configuration Menu shown in Figure 6-9 on page At the Services tab, click a drive to view the Drive configuration dialog box for that particular drive. In the Name box, view the current name of the drive as viewed by the host system. In the Address box, view the address of the tape drive within the tape library. Under Rename Drive: In the Node box, you can change the name of the NonStop system that is hosting the drive. See Renaming a Drive on page In the Name box, you can alter the name of the drive. Under Enter Password: In the Password box, enter the appropriate password to perform any service options. This password was configured during installation of MLMM, during View_Config. Under Take Out Of Services, the following information is viewable only: 6-10

In the bottom left of the menu the user can select to bring a drive in or out of service, rename a drive or dismount a tape cartridge. Bringing a Drive In or Out of Service At the Drive configuration dialog box (Figure 6-9 on page 6-10): 1. In the Password box, enter the correct password. 2. Under Choose an option, choose either In Service or Out Service. 3. The Services tab (Figure 6-8 on page 6-9) reappears, reflecting the new status of your drive. Renaming a Drive At the Drive configuration dialog box (Figure 6-9): 1. Under Rename drive, make the appropriate changes in the Name and/or Node box. 2. In the Password box, enter the correct password. 3. Under Choose an option, click Rename. 4. The Services tab, Figure 6-8, reappears. The drive is renamed. Dismounting a Tape From a Drive The name of the NonStop system hosting the drive. The name of the drive as viewed by the host system. The address of the drive within the library. The barcode label of a tape that is mounted in the drive. The domain of the media such as Quantum or STK. The specific version of media such LTO. The manufacturer of the drive. The product number of the drive. The internal serial number of the drive. At the Drive configuration dialog box (Figure 6-9): 1. Under Choose an option, click Dismount. 2. The Services tab, Figure 6-8, reappears. The tape is dismounted and the drive status light is now green, indicating that the drive is online and empty. 6-11

See Figure Figure Media Labeling Tab Follow these steps to label a tape cartridge: 1. Select a tape drive to label. All media that is compatible with the selected drive will be displayed. Note. MLMM will only display drives that are connected to the same system as this particular GUI session. You can open multiple GUI sessions connected to multiple systems, if necessary. 2. Select ON or OFF for Override. Selecting Override as ON will override any existing label that the tape may have. 6-12
