1 Mac OS X Starting Up How to Turn on the Mac Press the button on the lower left hand corner in the back of the monitor (if you have the newest model) or press the power button on the CPU box if you have an older model How to Login 1) Click on your login name (User) 2) Type in your password 3) Click on login or press the Enter key This is the main screen you will see (the desktop): The Menu Bar The Apple Menu The Menulets/ Menu Extras The Disk/Hard Drive The Finder The Dock Apple Menu: contains information about the system Menu Bar: only one bar always at the top to the screen referring to the active program Menulets / Menu Extras: contains status icons at the upper-right corner: clock, volume 10/15/08 Rev7 1

2 Hard Drive Images: 0S X: Operating system also known as Leopard or v10.5 Protects your files with a personal firewall Provides access to applications that run within Leopard: imovie, itunes, Mail, QuickTime Player The Dock: The dock is used for quick access to application shortcuts and to access open programs: Launch applications from dock Running applications have a spot light Add/remove applications by dragging into/out of dock Click yellow button to minimize documents into dock To Quit an Application Currently Running from the Dock: 1) Click and hold down your mouse button on the icon of the currently running application 2) Select Quit from the menu To Add Shortcuts to the Dock: Drag and drop folder and/or application icon into the dock To Remove Shortcuts from the Dock: Drag and drop icon from dock into the desktop to puff it out Mouse: One button mouse Press and hold control key to right click Two button mouse works with Mac OS X Scroll wheel works with Mac OS X Any USB mouse will do Some, like Logitech, include a System Preference item to customize the mouse 2

3 New Folder Keyboard: Command Shift N Command N will open a new FINDER window Mouse: right/control click New Folder Menu: Or File --> New Folder Deleting files/folders Throw away a file/folder Keyboard: Command Delete Mouse: Drag to trash can in dock Menu: File --> Move to Trash Changing File/Folder Names Click once on a file, and wait Hit Return key to toggle Or Get Info --> Name & Extension Keyboard: Command-I Mouse: Right/control click Get Info Menu: File --> Get Info Empty trash Empty trash Keyboard: Command Shift Delete Mouse: Hold down mouse on trash, empty trash Menu: Finder --> Empty Trash Finder: Allows you to do a quick file search, show different views of the files, open applications and documents, connect to servers, and access disks and servers. 3

4 File Hierarchy In order to understand better how files are located on your Mac, double-click on the hard drive icon and switch views to the Column View. On the very far left you will see icons for your hard drive. In this column, activated server icons and any removable media (CD, DVD, etc.) installed on your computer at that particular time will also appear. If you click on the hard drive icon, the column next to it will visualize and will show files, programs and folders that the computer shares with all the users of this specific computer. Every time you click on a folder, it will show its contents in the column on its right. This most likely includes folders such as Applications, System, and Users. Click on Users and the column on its right shows a house icon with your username. That is where ALL of your particular files should be located, arranged within the different folders. All users have their own set of these folders, only accessible to the specific user. Clicking the desktop icon will show all you have in your desktop screen. Finder Preferences: Shows you the setting of Finder (whether to or not to show hard drive images on the desktop). It s done to have a cleaner desktop. To Get to Finder Preferences: 1) Click on Finder from the menu 2) Click on Preferences To Customize Finder Toolbar: 1) Click on View from the menu 2) Select Customize Toolbar 4

5 How do I find files or program on my computer? 1) Click Finder (the square faced icon) located on the dock or click on the desktop to make it active 2) Click on File/New Finder Window 3) Click on the Search text box 4) Type the information to be searched 5) Press Enter How to Open an Application 1) Click Finder (the square faced icon) located on the dock or click on the desktop to make it active 2) Click on File/New Finder Window or double-click on the OSX hard drive image on your desktop 3) Click on the application folder 4) Locate the application to be opened and double-click on it (e.g. to open Word) 5) Double-click on Microsoft Office X 6) Double-click on Microsoft Word 7) Microsoft Word will be opened and ready for use System Preferences: Configure system settings such as display, networking and appearance. Preferences are categorized as Personal, Hardware, Internet & Network and System. 5

6 To Adjust the Brightness using Screen Commands: 1) Start at the Apple, select System Preferences 2) Click on the Displays symbol 3) In the Display window, locate the Brightness slider bar to change the monitor brightness level If you check the Show Displays in the Menu Bar box in the display window, you will create a monitor symbol in the menu bar that will reveal a menu of options for your monitor, including opening the display window where you just adjusted the monitor brightness level. Sound Level: The easiest way to adjust the volume is to use the keys with speaker icons on the keyboard. You can increase, decrease, or mute the volume. To Adjust the Sound Level using Screen Commands: 1) Start at the Apple, select System Preferences 2) In System Preferences, find the sound symbol and click on it 3) At the bottom of the window you will find an Output volume slider bar. Adjust your sound level here or mute the sound by checking the Mute box at the end of the slider. 4) Check the Show volume in menu bar box underneath the slider and a symbol will appear in your menu bar that will allow you to adjust the sound from your desktop. The sound level slider will appear when you click on the sound symbol in your menu bar. File Size and More: 1) Highlight the icon of the file on your desktop in the Finder window 2) Select: File > Get Info from the Finder menu OR Command > i on your keyboard and a window will open with the file size information (and more) 3) Enlarge the Finder window by pulling on the lower right corner until you see the file size information To Open a Disk: 1) Insert media in its drive 2) Desktop screen will show disk icons 3) Double click the Disk icon to open it NOTE: Disks will not appear on screen unless there is a disk in the disk drive 6

7 Ejecting a Disk: 1) Drag disk icon and drop it into the trash (trash icon will turn into an ejecting icon) 2) Drive will pop disk out 3) If it is a CD/DVD, just hit the eject key next to the volume keys above the numeric keypad To Install a Printer: 1) Go to System Preferences 2) Click on Print & Fax symbol 3) Click on + button and follow the instruction on the screen to add a printer (Note: if the + button is not activated, click on the lock icon at the bottom of the window to unlock for making changes.) Shutting Down your Computer: To shut down the Mac, click on the Apple and select Shut Down. 7
