The Novell Application Launcher BY JOHN E. JOHNSTO N The Novell Application L a u n cher promises to simplify the software distribution process by placing knowledge of the application and the required workstation modifications in the NDS database. TECHNICAL SUPPORT November 97 THE s o f t wa re distri bution process is ve ry time consuming for most network managers. When a new Windows-based ap p l i c ation is acquire d, the netwo rk manage r first installs the software on the file server and then tests the software in a controlled e nv i ronment. Fi n a l ly, the softwa re is installed on the end users workstations. This last p rocess is perhaps the most time consuming, as it usually requires the installer to go from machine to machine, installing the new software. However, the Novell Application Launcher promises to simplify the software distribution process by placing knowledge of the ap p l i c ation and the re q u i red wo rk s t at i o n m o d i fi c ations (INI settings, regi s t ry settings, installation files, etc.) in the NDS database. When the end user requires access to a new application, the network manager simply grants access to the application, and the ap p l i c ation will install itself on the end user s workstation. Thus, the Novell Application Launcher (NAL) provides a method to cent ra l ly manage ap p l i c ations running on NetWare 4 and IntranetWare environments. NAL OVERVIEW When a typical ap p l i c ation is loaded on a Wi n d ows 95 wo rk s t at i o n, the fo l - l owing actions are perfo rmed by the i n s t a l l ation progra m : Program files are copied to the hard drive. INI files are created and/or modified. The Windows 95 Registry is modified. Icons are created. The Start menu is modified. When using NAL to install an application, all of the information listed previously is stored in the NetWare NDS. The latest N e t Wa re A d m i n i s t rator program (NWA d m i n ) is used to create Application objects. These Ap p l i c ation objects know wh i ch ap p l i c at i o n files need to be copied to the end user s hard drive and which modifications are required for the Windows 95 environment, such as Registry settings and INI modifications. Once the ap p l i c ation info rm ation is stored in an Application object in the NDS, the network manager grants access rights for the Application object to the end users. These users will see the application s icon appear on their system as soon as the access rights are granted. When the user clicks on the application s icon, the NAL program will use the info rm ation in the NDS Application object to install and launch the application on the end user s workstation. NAL COMPONENTS NAL 2.01 is comprised of four components. The first two components are used to administer NAL and the applications under NA L s control. The second two components are run on the end user s workstation to c o n t rol the wo rk s t ation end of the ap p l i c at i o n delivery and launching mechanisms. Novell Application Launcher Snap-In The NAL Snap-In is a DLL that is used to extend the functionality of the NetWare A d m i n i s t rator program. This ex t e n s i o n p rov i d e s support for creating Application objects in the NDS database. Novell Application Launcher snappshot The tool snappshot analyzes a Windows application and determines which files and Windows 95 workstation modifications are required to distribute the application. After

it analy zes an ap p l i c at i o n,s n AppShot cre at e s t wo file types: an Ap p l i c ation Object Template (*.AOT),and an Application Fi l e s container (*.FIL). The AOT file contains information on the required configuration changes for the end user s workstation. The FIL file(s) contain the actual files that the ap p l i c at i o n s installation program wo u l d copy to the user s hard drive. NAL uses these file types to control and perform the installation of the application on the enduser s workstation. Novell Application Launcher Window The NAL Window is a workstation component that displays the icons of the applications available to the end user. Novell Application Launcher Explorer The NAL Explorer allows the network manager to deliver applications into the Windows Explorer on Windows 95 and Windows NT workstations. Users can see and launch NAL ap p l i c ations from the NAL Explorer. NAL PREPARATION INFORMATION Implementing NAL requires the install ation of the latest ve rsions of the IntranetWare client and the latest version of the NetWare Administrator program. The information in this section details how to find these components. Support Pages Novell has created a dedicated support p age for NAL on its web site. The NAL supp o rt page is located at l l. c o m / h o m e / client/nam and contains a we a l t h of info rm ation that can help with installat i o n. Obtaining NAL Version 2.01 To obtain NAL ve rsion 2.01, go to the NA L support page listed above and review the NAL FAQ. Here you will find instructions for downloading the latest version of NAL. T I P : N ovell constantly modifies its web site. The URLs and web navigation instructions identified here may not be current as you read this. You should always perform a search on the Novell Web site for the latest information on a given component. IntranetWare Client You must install the latest IntranetWare client on all Windows 95 workstations that will be using NAL Even if you are not running IntranetWare on your file server(s), you should implement this new cl i e n t. Many of the features of this client can be exploited in NetWare 4.x environments. To determine the most current file name on the Novell web site for the IntranetWare Client32 software, perform a search using the following keywords: IntranetWare Client As of this writing, the latest Windows 95 I n t ra n e t Wa re client can be obtained by downloading file 95ENU_N3.EXE. NetWare Administrator You must install the latest version of the N e t Wa re A d m i n i s t rator program on the workstation that will be used to create and maintain the NDS Application objects. The latest version of the NetWare Administrator for Windows 95 can be obtained by downloading file ADM41195.EXE from the Novell Web site. INSTALLING NAL 2.01 ON THE FILE SERVER The installation of NAL 2.0 on the file s e rver perfo rms seve ral functions, i n cl u d i n g the copying of files and programs to the SYS:PUBLIC directory and the extension of the NDS schema. The following steps a re re q u i red to load NAL 2.01 on a NetWare 4 file server: Figure 1: NAL Explorer (NALEXPLD.EXE) User Interface N E T W O R K I N G 1. Log into the NDS tree where NAL is to be installed. Make sure you have rights to update the NDS tree. 2. From the Windows Explorer, doubleclick on the SETUPNAL.EXE program. 3. You will be prompted to allow the setup program to extend the NDS schema. C l i ck on Y E S. Seve ral files will be copied to the PUBLIC dire c t o ry of the file serve r. 4. You will be asked if you want the setup program to install sample application objects. Click on YES. After the installation, start the NetWare Administrator. The following changes will be in your NDS structure: The Application object is added to the new object list. The Tools menu shows three new properties: Export Application Object, Migrate Application Objects and Show Inherited Applications. Each OU and User object will now contain an Application and Launcher Configuration p age. Each Group will contain an Ap p l i c at i o n property page. November 97 TECHNICAL SUPPORT

TIP: No matter which method you use to implement NAL on the end user s Windows 95 workstation, the target workstation must have the latest IntranetWare Client32 ins t a l l e d. Please re fer to the NAL Prep a rat i o n I n fo rm at i o n section in this art i cle for more information on obtaining and installing the Windows 95 IntranetWare Client32 client software package. Implementing NAL on the Workstation Using NALEXPLD.EXE NA L E X P L D.EXE will load the NA L E x p l o rer utility on the end user s Wi n d ows 95 wo rk s t ation. The NA L E X- P L D.EXE program only needs to be executed once on the wo rk s t ation to p e r fo rm the installation. The NA L E x p l o rer will automat i c a l ly launch itself after the installation has been perfo rm e d. To run the NA L E X P L D.EXE program on the target Wi n d ows 95 wo rk s t at i o n, cl i ck on Start, R u n, then enter the path to the p rogra m, for ex a m p l e : G:\PUBLIC\NALEXPLD.EXE Figure 4: Group, Organization and Individual Application Associations After executing the NA L E X P L D. Implementing NAL on the Workstation Using NAL.EXE NAL.EXE will run the NAL utility on the end user s Windows 95 workstation. Unlike NALEXPLD.EXE, NAL.EXE must be run each time the workstation is restarted. To run the NAL.EXE program on the target Windows 95 workstation, click on Start, Run, then enter the path to the program. For example: G:\PUBLIC\NALEXE The following sample applications will be represented in your NDS: NetWare Administrator 95 NetWare Administrator NT snappshot Application TECHNICAL SUPPORT November 97 Implementing NAL on the Workstations There are two methods of implementing NAL on the end user s Windows 95 workstation: NALEXPLD.EXE and NAL.EXE. The main diffe rence between the two methods is the end-user interface. Figure 1 T I P : You can add NAL.EXE to the S t a rtup folder to invo ke it each time Wi n d ows 95 re s t a rt s. SETTING UP APPLICATIONS TO RUN UNDER NAL The applications launched by NAL can be divided into two categories: simple and complex. Simple applications are DOS- or Wi n d ows-based programs that do not modify

N E T W O R K I N G Figure 5: Applications Available to All Members of.group1.tsg Figure 6: Starting the snappshot Utility INI files or modify registry settings. Simple applications are very easy to implement as you only need to create an Application object in the NDS tre e. Complex ap p l i c at i o n s that do modify system settings require the use of the snappshot utility wh i ch is included in the NAL software package. Simple Application Installation Following are the steps required to set up a simple DOS or Windows application: Figure 7: Application Files are Stored in the Network Directory and a Template File is Created 1. Create Application object in NDS tree. 2. Make Optional Configuration entries in Application objects property pages. To show you how to perfo rm a simple ap p l i c ation setup, we will go through the steps re q u i red to set up the N e t Wa re A d m i n i s t rator program to ru n under NA L : 1. From NetWare Administrator, highlight the container which is to hold the Application, then select: Object > Create > Application The Application Creation Wizard will start, as shown in Figure Enter an object name in the appropriate b ox, then select the path to the exe c u t abl e file using the navigation tool button. 3. Click on Create. You should see an icon appear for the new application object on your NDS tree. ALLOWING USERS TO ACCESS THE APPLICATION 1. From NWAdmin, double-click on the newly created Application object. 2. Click on the Associations page, then click on Add. You provide access to the ap p l i c ation by adding one of the fo l l owing objects to the Association page: User Group Organizational Unit Organization Object All users in the container objects (gro u p, OU or O) associated with the ap p l i c at i o n will be granted rights to the ap p l i c at i o n. TIP: If the application requires rights to certain files in the file system, these rights are not automatically granted to the users associated with the ap p l i c at i o n object. File system rights must be explicitly granted. On the end user s workstation, click on the NAL Explorer folder. If you do not see the NAL Explorer folder, you must run the SYS:\PUBLIC\NALEXPLD.EXE program to set up NAL on the wo rk s t ation as described in the Implementing NAL on the Workstation section. You should now see t wo fo l d e rs : the Pe rsonal folder and a fo l d e r with the name of your NDS tree. November 97 TECHNICAL SUPPORT

N E T W O R K I N G Figure 8: Selecting the Application Template File When Creating an NDS Application Object Using the NWAdmin Pro g ram Complex Application Installation Using snappshot To set up ap p l i c ations that re q u i re m o d i fi c ations to the regi s t ry or INI fi l e s, you must utilize the snappshot utility. R e m e m b e r, this utility cre ates.aot and.fil files that are used by NAL to c re ate the Ap p l i c ation object. The fo l l owing steps are re q u i red to implement c o m p l ex ap p l i c at i o n s : 1. Select a workstation that has a standard configuration for your environment and does not already have the target application installed. 2. From the selected workstation run the following: SYS:\PUBLIC\SNAPSHOT\SNAPSHOT.EXE Figure 9: Specifying the Source and Target Workstation Directories for the Client The initial snappshot screen, as shown in Figure 6 will be displayed. As described in Figure 6, snappshot will t a ke a snapshot of the current wo rk s t at i o n settings, prompt you to install an application, then will take another snap s h o t of the system and ge n e rate the.aot and.fil files to aid in the ap p l i c at i o n object creation. The look of the end user s NAL objects va ries depending upon the type of object t h at was associated with the ap p l i c at i o n object. For ex a m p l e, in Fi g u re 4, the user was given access to three ap p l i c at i o n objects. The ap p l i c ation in the. G roup1.tsg folder is an ap p l i c ation that had the users in Group1 associated with it. All users in Group1 will have the. G roup1.tsg folder in their NA L E x p l o re r. If the user double cl i cks on the. G roup1.tsg fo l d e r, all of the ap p l i c a- tions ava i l able to the users in Group1 will be displaye d, as shown in Fi g u re 5. TECHNICAL SUPPORT November 97 If the end user then cl i cks on the ap p l i c at i o n object (NWAdmin_grp in this example), the application will be launched. Fi g u re 4 also shows two other fo l d e rs :.TSG and John E. Johnston. The.TSG folder contains the ap p l i c ation object(s) t h at have the Orga n i z ation object unit TSG associated with it. All users in the TSG Orga n i z ation will have access to the ap p l i c ations in this fo l d e r. The folder titled John E. Jo h n s t o n contains the ap p l i c ation objects that have the end user s user object associated with it. 3. Next, you will be prompted for the application name and shortcut name. 4. Then, you will be prompted to enter a dire c t o ry and file name of the ap p l i c ation confi g u ration file (. AOT) and a dire c t o ry for the ap p l i c ation files. The dire c t o ry s p e c i fied should reside on yo u r N e t Wa re file server to maintain a central rep o s i t o ry for the ap p l i c ation objects fi l e s. 5. The next panel will prompt you for drives, files and directories to include and exclude from the snapshot process. For many ap p l i c at i o n s, you may ch o o s e the defaults. 6. After clicking on Next, the snappshot utility will examine the drives, files and d i re c t o ries specified and cre ate a snap s h o t image of the workstation. When this is completed, click on the Run Setup button to begin installing the ap p l i c ation. 7. Browse to and run the setup program for the ap p l i c ation. After the installat i o n

c o m p l e t e s, sw i t ch back to the snap p S h o t window and click on Next. 8. You will be prompted for the directory into which the application was just i n s t a l l e d. This info rm ation is used if yo u wish to have NAL install the program for the target wo rk s t ations in a dire c t o ry other than what was installed on this wo rk s t ation. For more info rm ation on this feature, click on the Help button. Another snapshot of the workstation will be taken to see what files have been added to the workstation and what settings have been modified. The new files will be copied to the dire c t o ry specified earlier and the templat e file will be cre at e d. This template file will be used to create the Application object in the next step. When the template file is completed, snappshot will display the screen shown in Figure 7. N ow we are re a dy to cre ate the Application object. 1. From NetWare Administrator, highlight the container which is to hold the Application, then select: Object > Create > Application The Application Creation Wizard will start. 2. Click on the Use this wizard with an application object template box; then click on Next. 3. Browse to and select the.aot file created earlier, as shown in Figure Next, the panel shown in Figure 9 will be displayed, asking you to confirm the s o u rce and target dire c t o ries for the wo rk - station installations. This panel will i n clude the dire c t o ry info rm ation entere d when running the snappshot utility. You should see an icon appear for the n ew ap p l i c ation object on your NDS tre e. 5. Set up your users to access the new application as defined in the Allowing U s e rs to Access the Ap p l i c at i o n s e c t i o n. When the end user executes the ap p l i c a- t i o n object from his NAL Explorer, the application files will be copied to the ap p ro p ri ate dire c t o ry on the target wo rk - s t ation and then the system settings o n the target workstation will be modified. Fi n a l ly, the ap p l i c ation will be launch e d. NAL: A GIANT STEP FORWARD Installing and upgrading software on end users workstations is one of the most timeconsuming tasks performed by networking N E T W O R K I N G professionals. NAL is a giant step toward a u t o m ating the softwa re distri bution pro c e s s. NAL does take some time on the front end to test and perfect the ap p l i c ation object. AOT and.fil files, but the time pay back on the back end is well worth the effort. ts NaSPA member John E.
