Pharos Designer 2 Welcome Welcome to Pharos Designer 2. We are delighted to introduce you to an entirely new version of the Pharos Designer software that picks up where the venerable and much- loved version 1 leaves off. Designer 2 aims to offer all the capabilities of version 1, plus lots of helpful additions and gives us a better platform to build on as we add many more new features in upcoming versions. We have been working on this for quite a long time, and are now at the stage where we recommend new projects use Designer 2 to start benefiting from its new way of working, faster user interface and added flexibility. Current projects already running and successful using version 1 need not upgrade unless a particular Designer 2 feature would enhance the project. There are some situations where moving to Designer 2 is not possible. Please see the list of Known issues at the end of this document. Below is a lot of information about what s new, how to get started. As always we have your back. Get in touch with our support staff by ing us support@pharoscontrols.com to get any help with Pharos products and software. Enjoy! What s New The basic workflow of the Designer software has not changed so if you have used our software before then you should find it straightforward to get started. But we have tried to incorporate up- to- date user interface conventions that will make it easier and faster to use, as well as a fresh, new graphical style. General Multi- screen support pop out any tab into its own window Multiple instances of the application can be run at the same time with different projects Open multiple projects copy and paste between projects Multi- level Undo/Redo Auto- save your work is stored to disk as you go New Tab names and re- ordered to follow typical project workflow Advanced features are hidden until needed to simplify workflow Issues with your project configuration are automatically detected and reported Project New Project wizard allowing quick setup of controllers and features. New view for managing projects and their properties Projects created in version 1 can be migrated to version 2 using a standalone tool Project files can be downloaded from Controllers and opened in Designer New Import Object feature making importing fixture and pixel matrix layouts, KiNet power supplies and your patch from any delimited file type New Export Object feature allows you to export fixture positions and pixel matrix layouts, KiNet power supplies and your patch to CSV files for manipulation in spreadsheet tools such as MS Excel User can define custom properties for fixtures, layouts and timelines that will be shown in reports to help manage other project data Copyright Pharos Architectural Controls (15/1/2015)
Plan Multiple fixture layouts within a single project simpler to model different areas of an installation or different views of a 3D structure Fixture instances allow a single fixture to appear multiple times on your layouts A fixture does not need to be on a layout to still be in your project New automatically generated All Fixtures group in the fixture browser Searchable fixture library easier to find the fixture you need Folders for Recent and Used fixture types in the fixture library Online fixture library wider range of fixtures can be downloaded from our servers Fast single- click placement of new fixtures no more drag- and- drop to add fixtures Change Fixture Type function supported Create Custom Type From allows custom fixtures to be created from fixtures in library New Transform Tools allow selected fixtures to be aligned, rotated and redistributed New Snap to Fixtures toggle Fixture groups can now be numbered and used in scripts New Stretch and Fill setting for background images Holding shift while doing a lasso selection allows fixture position to determine group order Press Escape to clear fixture selection press it again to recall last selection Patch Add the universes you are going to use in the project rather than having them all present Offset patching so a group of fixtures can be patched with custom spacing Two universes of Ethernet DMX pass- through to local DMX Output Ports Mapping Importing media no longer requires Quicktime to be installed Media files can be organised with folders and searched Media files can be previewed in a built in media player Scene New Scene tab replaces the Movers tab and as well as controlling moving lights this also offers a new way to create static colour looks for regular fixtures Folder structure for scenes Timeline Improved management of timelines Tabs for fast switching between the timelines you are working on Fast single- click placement of presets hold Ctrl or Cmd if you want to add multiple Modify preset settings before or after you place on the timeline Favourite colours can now more easily be saved and managed Multi- element copy and paste After changes programming rebuilds in the background to make the user interface more responsive A timeline can be given one of 4 group designations and timelines can be acted upon by group in triggers Interface Editor The touch panel Interface Editor is now an integrated part of the Designer software Have multiple layouts for each TPC open at once Can copy and paste entire pages of an interface Copyright Pharos Architectural Controls (15/1/2015)
Triggers Complete rework of the triggers user interface and how you add or edit triggers Copy/paste conditions or actions into other triggers Edit multiple actions/conditions at the same time Filter triggers by type or tag them with group designation Script editor moved to its own area and ability to manage scripts independently Set RGB actions can now also set intensity Set RGB actions can now be given a playback priority Groups can now be selected by number in Set/Clear RGB actions Improved handling for variables when passed into and out of scripts Simulate Tabbed environment to see simulation on any layout Audio track selection and sync d playback for listening to an audio track while simulating. Output Live now allows the user to selectively take control of fixtures being programmed so that other parts of the project continue to run uninterrupted Network Network tab can be used to configure Controllers without an open project Projects can be downloaded from a Controller from within Designer Discover controllers by IP address allows user to enter IP address of controllers that are not on the local network Connect to controllers over USB behaves the same way as Ethernet Web Interface New improved layout Projects can be uploaded to or downloaded from controllers using their web interface Project status shows scenes and timelines Log filtering options with more than 5 times the log information stored User access control by view New file manager for uploading additional project files New network view for an easy overview of project Controllers and Remote Device status Formatting (CSS) and images of the standard web interface can be customised Simpler management of custom web interfaces Getting Started There are a few areas of the software where things have changed significantly compared to the current version of Pharos Designer: the new Layout tab that has replaced Setup, the Timeline tab, the Scene tab and the Trigger tab. The project file format has also changed, but we provide a migration tool for converting existing projects to the new format should you need to do so. Starting a new project After opening the software and choosing new project you will be presented with a dialog. Selecting Create a default project will begin a blank project and the other options. Otherwise you will be walked through setting up much of the project related information. This includes adding the controller type in your project and also associating them with hardware online and choosing what tab and features are exposed in Designer for this project. When you first arrive in the software you will see the familiar tabs Copyright Pharos Architectural Controls (15/1/2015)
but you will also notice that all menu items are within the app. Also notice the icons on the right for access to the main preferences, software Issues, Undo/Redo and access to Help documentation. You will also notice the Reports Tab missing and re- positioned as a menu item on the Project Tab. Adding fixtures to a Layout Switching to the Layout tab will bring you to a familiar fixture layout area. You will see that within Layout you have a tabbed environment for creating different arrangements of your fixtures for use during programming or simulation. These could be different floors or areas of a project site, or different views of a three- dimensional structure. The menu bar contains tools for managing layouts. Select the fixture from the library that you want to add to your project. You no longer need to drag- and- drop. Simply click on the fixture in the library, then click to place on the layout. If you want to place multiple fixtures then hold down Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) while adding your first fixture and then you can click repeatedly within the layout. Once you have selected a fixture from the library, there is also an Auto Finish check box in the fixture properties that controls whether the fixture stays in placement mode without using modifier keys. Click Finish or hit Esc when you are done placing that fixture type. Once you have some fixtures on a plan you can explore some of newer tools in the software. New fixture tools in Layout Fixture Instances - When duplicating, copying and pasting fixtures, you can now create multiple instances of a fixture. This allows fixtures to exists on multiple layouts and/or on the same layout. The fixture browser allows you to see which fixtures have instances by the indicator to the left of the fixture name. You will also note that a fixture does not need to be on a layout at all. Explore the Remove from Layout function to keep a fixture in your programming but not have it exist on a layout. Transform Tools - When selecting 2 or more fixtures click on Transform Tools in the layout menu to display the on screen controls for alignment, distributing, rotating, flipping and skewing groups of fixtures. In addition to these tools right- click on the plan to see the new snap tool called, Snap to Fixtures. Timeline The Timeline tab operates much like you would expect. You will notice that timelines are now tabs so you can conveniently switch between the ones you are working with just as with Layouts. Timeline tabs can be added, re- ordered and removed. Removing a tab simply hides it and does not delete it. Use the Manage... tools to search, display and hide timelines from view. Timeline presets are now added to a timeline in the same manner as adding fixtures. Select a preset, change its parameters and then click to select its location on a timeline. Holding down Ctrl (Cmd for Mac) will allow you to add multiples. This is more of a painter style of operation, which is much more convenient when adding multiple presets. A new Save feature when using the colour selector allows you to more clearly save and manage favourite colours for your project. Scene In version 1 the Movers moving light programing area for non- intensity parameters has always worked as a scene creation tool. We are now extending it to allow programming of static intensity and colour looks. The Scene tab will handle moving light programming as before, but now even RGB Copyright Pharos Architectural Controls (15/1/2015)
LEDs can be part of a scene. Scenes can then be played back by either placing them on a timeline or starting them directly from a trigger. Scenes are a convenient alternative to hold- at- end timelines for creating persistent looks. Trigger The trigger theory of operation has not changed but the layout and organisation of triggers has changed quite a bit. An individual trigger s logic now reads top to bottom rather than left to right. Each trigger can be collapsed into a summary row for consolidation. When working with triggers, they can be duplicated as before. However you can now use drag- and- drop to move and copy conditions and actions between triggers. Order in the list still determines how the system processes triggers but now you can display only the trigger/s you wish to by filtering by type and/or assigning a group colour tag to them. Each trigger also has a new simple control to enable or disable it from being uploaded to the controller. Some Other Highlights Multi- screen support In version 1 we offered the option to open the simulate tab as a separate window so you could modify timelines and view simulation at the same time. In Designer 2 we have extended that concept further and you can now open any tab as a separate window to make best use of multiple screens. Just hover over the tab you want to open and then click on the new window button that appears. Online Fixture Library Pharos has a vast library of different fixture types available but it is not very efficient forcing every user to download the entire library when they will never use most of it. So instead we are now only including a selection of the most commonly used fixtures and generic types with the Designer 2 installer but any other fixture can be downloaded from our online fixture library, which is fully searchable. Just click on the cloud button at the top right of the fixture library on the Layout tab. Network Tab Enabled before project load This is a new feature that allows controllers online to be accessed before loading a project file. This is handy for reloading firmware, setting configuration properties and retrieving a project file from a controller. Import and Export object data With large projects it is sometimes more convenient to import fixture data or layouts from external data. This is now much better supported with our Import Object and Export Object features, that allow fixture or pixel matrix data to be imported from any delimited file format or exported as CSV for manipulation in a spreadsheet programme. Copyright Pharos Architectural Controls (15/1/2015)
Programming re- building in the background A key goal in Designer 2 is to make the software more responsive when working with large projects. Part of how we achieve that is by doing lots of the processing work to create your new programming in the background, making use of the latest multi- threading and multi- core techniques and allowing you to carry on working. An indicator in the menu bar, close to the Issues Icon, lets you know when these background processes are running. New Group Numbering Groups in Designer 2 are now assigned numbers. This is a big step forward for groups, as a numbering scheme is required for the software to choose something by variable or in a script. In version 1 Groups were simply named collections of fixtures and could only be used by timeline programming and trigger actions for set intensity and RGB. A numbering system for accessing a group now brings even more flexibility with TPC programming and third party integration. Release All In Group Action Timelines and scenes now have a group property. There are 4 default groups, A, B, C and D. This list will be customisable in a future version. Each timeline and scene can be a member of one of the groups, or not be in any group. The Release All action now offers options to release: All (timelines and scenes) All Timelines All Scenes All in Group All not in Group Trigger Action for Set RGB now handles Intensity as well Using the Set RGB action always required the intensity or virtual intensity of the fixture or group to have been established someplace else. Typically this was a timeline. When using the TPC Colour picker or any Set RGB mechanism, the new Set RGB action can establish intensity for you, removing the need to run a timeline to set intensity. Web Interface Enhancements The new enhanced web interface served by each controller now offers much more than it did in version 1. Some of the enhancements include: Three levels of access with the ability to define users and passwords in Pharos Designer Status for timelines, scenes and group Levels New log environment with filtering capabilities and nearly 10 times the log entries. Control page mimics the Designer trigger page including filtering Upload and Download controls for project files File Manager for access to the memory card files instead of FTP Remote Device status can now be seen Ability to re- style the web interface without the need for a custom web interface Migrating to the new software We provide two special utilities to help move from version 1 to version 2 software. To migrate any of your Pharos hardware, first connect to it over an Ethernet network and open the Firmware Migration Tool. Select the Controller or Remote Device you wish to change firmware on. This is a one- off operation to move to the version 2 software once complete then you can use Designer 2 to connect to the hardware and future software updates can be done from Designer 2 in the normal way. Copyright Pharos Architectural Controls (15/1/2015)
Please note that the Firmware Migration Tool can also be used to migrate your Pharos hardware back to the version 1 firmware, should you wish to do so. When migrating the firmware of an EXT to version 2 (or from version 2 back to version 1) it must be connected to a TPC that is already running version 2 firmware. So when upgrading, please upgrade the TPC first. When downgrading, downgrade the EXT first. We also recommend uploading a blank project to the TPC so that it is not outputting DMX through the EXT as this can also cause issues. USB can be used to connect to controllers, but this is done differently from version 1 and we now make USB behave like an Ethernet interface. You will need to run a separate installer to add a USB Ethernet Service to your system. Migrating a project created in version 1 to version 2 is also straightforward using the Project Migration Tool. Select the file you wish to migrate and choose a directory for the converted project file. The tool will attempt to convert all parts of a project. A report and error window will let you monitor the process and report if the tool encountered anything it was not able to migrate. Copyright Pharos Architectural Controls (15/1/2015)
Known Issues These are some known issues with the current release: Change Fixture Type feature does not cope with changing channel footprint (#869) Controllers are not shown in Network view after interface changed (#874) There are also a small number of things that we are never going to support in Designer 2: Hardware connections via USB require a driver install that is bundled within the Windows Installer and a separate Mac App to add to the application folder. LPCs with serial numbers between and 005xxx will not function with Designer 2, and please continue to use Designer v1.x with these units. Note that this will only affect LPCs manufactured in 2010 or earlier these are the older units with the expansion port at one end. The AVC is not supported in Designer 2. ETC Net2 is no longer supported DV over Firewire no longer supported for live video input into the LPC X Mac OS X 10.7.x and earlier are not supported Reporting Issues and feedback Please report any technical support issues to support@pharoscontrols.com. If you are reporting an issue then please include the version number of the software and your project file, as well as any screenshots or videos that illustrate the problem. Please also include your computer s OS (Windows/Mac OS Version). This will help us track it down and fix the issue as quickly as possible. To report feedback or your thoughts on what is good or bad, please continue to use feedback@pharoscontrols.com. This is special address we have set up to manage this transition to Designer 2 to get your ideas. There is a shortcut to opening a new to this address by clicking the Send Feedback link on the toolbar of the Designer application. Copyright Pharos Architectural Controls (15/1/2015)
