2 When Using on Macintosh 2.1 How to install (For Mac OS 8.6, 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2) You need to install the driver before connecting the Tri-Media Reader to your Mac. Follow these steps to install the driver. 1) Start up Mac OS. 2) Insert the Driver CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive on your Mac. When you insert the CD-ROM, the CD-ROM window opens automatically. If it does not, double-click the CD-ROM icon to open it. 3) Double-click the Tri-Media Reader Installer icon to start it. 4) When the install software startup screen appears, click the Continue button to proceed. Page 7
5) Although the instructions are in English, they are the same as those in this manual. Click the Continue button to proceed. 6) Click the Install button to start installation. If you want to change the installation location to another hard disk other than the startup hard disk, click the Switch Disk button to change the install location to your desired hard disk and then click the Install button. 7) When the following screen appears, the installation is complete successfully. Click the Restart button to restart your Macintosh. 8) When your Mac OS has restarted, connect the Tri-Media Reader to the USB port on your Macintosh with the USB cable. If you connect the Tri-Media Reader to a USB port on your keyboard, it does not operate: be sure to connect it to a USB port on your Mac. Page 8
2.2 How to operate on Macintosh 1) Inserting (mounting) a medium. When you insert media such as SmartMedia, CompactFlash, and floppy into the Tri-Media Reader, its corresponding icon appears on your desktop, which indicates that you can access it. Floppy Disk SmartMedia CompactFlash If a floppy disk that is not formatted or cannot be recognized is inserted, the following message appears. If you want to initialize it, click the Initialize button to perform initialization. Usually, click the Eject button and then pull out the disk. When you use a digital camera, insert SmartMedia / CompactFlash, and the above screen appears, that media card is broken. Click the Eject button and pull it out. When performing initialization, use your digital camera wherever possible; do not perform initialization on your Macintosh. If you perform initialization on your Macintosh, your digital camera cannot recognize media due to the difference in the format specifications. 2) Removing (Unmounting) a medium. The Tri-Media Reader does not provide door lock function and auto eject function. When removing media, first, perform the following unmount operation, check that the icon disappears from the desktop, and remove media. To unmount media, drag the media and drop onto the Trash (operation in which you place the media icon onto the Trash and, when the Trash is displayed in reverse (black), release the mouse button), or click the media icon and choose [Eject] from the [Special] menu of the Finder. If you do not perform unmount operation and you just remove media, your computer may hang or data on the media may be destroyed. Page 9
You can remove a floppy disk and CompactFlash by pressing the Eject button. For SmartMedia, no Eject button is provided: simply pull it out. 3) Connecting / disconnecting the USB cable. You can connect the USB cable any time you want. Before removing the USB cable, unmount all media following the description in 2). If you do not unmount media and you just disconnect the USB cable, your computer may hang or data on the media may be destroyed. 4) IBM's Microdrive. You can use IBM's compact PC card type hard disk, Microdrive: because it requires large power, use it alone. If you insert a Microdrive and other media at the same time, a hang-up may occur due to shortage of power. Before inserting a Microdrive, remove SmartMedia and floppy disk. While a Microdrive is in the Tri-Media Reader, do not insert SmartMedia or floppy disk. 5) Sleep. Although the Tri-Media Reader supports the Macintosh's sleep function, we recommend that you perform unmount operation before sleep. Depending on the version of your Mac OS or the model of your Macintosh, a malfunction may occur. In this case, before sleep, perform unmount operation for all media and then disconnect the USB cable. During sleep, do not insert/remove media and connect/disconnect the USB cable. Especially for Mac notebooks, if you connect/disconnect the USB cable during sleep, they wake up automatically, which causes unexpected battery consumption or the startup of the hard disk. Therefore, before you carry them, be sure to unmount all media and then disconnect the USB cable. Page 10

5 Handling Precaution 1) The Tri-Media Reader is a precision device adjusted accurately in the manufacturing factory. Dropping it or giving it vibration or impact may cause failure. 2) When carrying the Tri-Media Reader, remove all media: floppy disk, SmartMedia, and CompactFlash. Carrying it with media inserted may cause failure. 3) Format SmartMedia and CompactFlash cards on your digital camera. If you format them on the Tri-Media Reader, your digital camera may not recognize them. 4) Before turning on your computer, remove all media. 5) Insert SmartMedia with its golden terminals downward. 6) If a read error occurs for SmartMedia, check that its gold terminals are not dirty. 7) Before removing media, check that the access lamp is not lit. If access looks complete on your computer's screen, actual access may not finish due to the cache function or delayed write function of the OS. If you pull out media during access, data may be destroyed or failure may occur. 8) Do not copy data protected by the copyright law. This may be illegal. 9) The Tri-Media Reader does not support the ID information on SmartMedia with ID. You can use SmartMedia with ID as normal media. 10) Floppy disk adapters such as FlashPath are not supported. 11) The Tri-Media Reader may not read copy-protected floppy disks. 12) You cannot start up your computer from a floppy disk, SmartMedia, and CompactFlash in the Tri-Media Reader. 13) If you use resident anti-virus software, operation may be abnormally slow or a hang-up may occur. In this case, remove media in the Tri-Media Reader from its check targets. 14) If your Windows PC uses an old USB OHCI controller, operation may be abnormally slow or a hang-up may occur. In this case, upgrading to Windows 98 SE or later may improve this. Contact your PC's manufacturer. 6 Technical Support Contact Information For the latest driver software and technical information, access: inquiries (English) (Japanese) mailto:support@yedata.co.jp For failures, malfunctions, missing parts and so on of the product, contact the shop from which you purchased this product.
