Introducing Horizon FLEX 1 With Horizon FLEX, you can access a restricted virtual machine, called a Horizon FLEX virtual machine, on your Windows or Mac computer. Horizon FLEX enables you to use the business desktop and applications you need to get your job done while working in the style that best suits your needs. You can continue to work, even if you do not have an Internet connection. This chapter includes the following topics: What Is a Horizon FLEX Virtual Machine?, on page 7 Selecting a Horizon FLEX Client, on page 8 What Is a Horizon FLEX Virtual Machine? A Horizon FLEX virtual machine is a software computer that, like a physical computer, runs an operating system and applications. A Horizon FLEX virtual machine typically contains a display, a hard disk or disks, one or more processors, memory, a CD/DVD drive, a network adapter, and a USB controller. All of these components are virtualized. That is, these elements of a virtual machine are all created by software and stored in files on your computer. Your Horizon FLEX virtual machine runs in a window on your local computer. You can install applications in the virtual machine and operate it as you would a physical computer. An operating system cannot distinguish between a virtual machine and a physical machine, nor can applications or other computers on a network. What you can do with a physical machine (install software, save files, add additional drives, and so on) you can do with a virtual machine. Horizon FLEX virtual machines are fully supported by VMware Fusion Pro and VMware Workstation Player with the underlying physical hardware. For example, you can use a virtual machine with virtual components that are completely different from the physical components that are present on the underlying hardware. Virtual machines on the same physical host can run different kinds of operating systems, including Windows and Linux. VMware, Inc. 7

Selecting a Horizon FLEX Client To use a Horizon FLEX virtual machine, you must install a Horizon FLEX Client on your local machine. Horizon FLEX includes two versions of the Horizon FLEX Client, one for Windows hosts and one for Mac hosts. You can select and install the appropriate Horizon FLEX Client for you. Horizon FLEX Client for Windows Horizon FLEX Client for Mac If you have a Windows machine, you use Horizon FLEX Client for Windows (Workstation Player) to access your Horizon FLEX virtual machine. When you install Workstation Player with a Horizon FLEX license key, you can download and open a Horizon FLEX virtual machine on your Windows machine. You access all Workstation Player features through the main Workstation Player interface. Workstation Player for Windows is the Horizon FLEX Client for Windows for Horizon FLEX For more information about Workstation Player, see the Workstation Player for Windows documentation at If you have a Mac, you use Horizon FLEX Client for Mac (Fusion Pro) to access your Horizon FLEX virtual machine. When you install Fusion Pro with a Horizon FLEX license key, you can download and open a Horizon FLEX virtual machine on your Mac. You access all Fusion Pro features through the main Fusion interface. Fusion Pro is the Horizon FLEX Client for Mac for Horizon FLEX For more information about Fusion Pro, see the Fusion Pro documentation at Your Horizon FLEX administrator might provide your Horizon FLEX virtual machine on a server or a USB device, or install it on your local machine. Problem The message File not found: D:\Virtual Machines\Win7EntX64\Windows 7 x64.vmdk. The file is required to power on this virtual machine. If this file was moved, specify the new location. Cause The virtual machine disk (.vmdk) file is in the wrong directory. Solution u Move the.vmdk to the D:\Virtual Machines directory. VMware, Inc. 23

Virtual Machine Cannot Be Powered On The Horizon FLEX virtual machine cannot be powered on. Problem When you try to power on the Horizon FLEX virtual machine, the operation fails. Cause The failure of the Horizon FLEX virtual machine to power on can stem from several causes. The Horizon FLEX virtual machine was created on a Horizon FLEX server version newer than the client version that you are running. As a result, the hardware version of your Horizon FLEX virtual machine is not compatible with the Horizon FLEX server. The Horizon FLEX virtual machine might have been created with more virtual processor cores or a larger memory size than your host system supports. Solution 1 Contact your Horizon FLEX administrator for assistance. For the compatibility problem, your Horizon FLEX administrator can provide the Horizon FLEX client version to upgrade to. You might also be able to solve the compatibility problem by updating or downgrading the hardware version of your Horizon FLEX virtual machine. 2 Upgrade to the latest Horizon FLEX client version to address the issue of excess virtual processor cores or memory size for the host. Beginning with Horizon FLEX 1.7, the client automatically tries to boot the Horizon FLEX virtual machine with settings based on available resources. Virtual Machine Is Expired When you start your Horizon FLEX virtual machine, you receive a message that states that your virtual machine has expired. Problem The message This virtual machine has expired appears when you try to start your virtual machine in your Horizon FLEX Client. Cause The expiration date for your virtual machine has been reached and the virtual machine has been turned off. Solution Ask your Horizon FLEX administrator to reactivate your virtual machine. Virtual Machine Has Not Contacted the Server for n Days When you start your Horizon FLEX virtual machine, you receive a message that states that the virtual machine has not contacted the Horizon FLEX server for a certain number of days. Problem The message This restricted VM has been unable to contact its policy server for n day." appears when you try to start your virtual machine in Horizon FLEX Client. 24 VMware, Inc.

Chapter 4 Troubleshooting Horizon FLEX Virtual Machines Cause Your Horizon FLEX administrator sets how many days you can use your virtual machine without contact with the Horizon FLEX server. When this offline time limit is exceeded, the virtual machine will not power on without first connecting to the Horizon FLEX server. This error occurs if the virtual machine cannot connect to the Horizon FLEX server. Solution Check your network connection and try again. If the problem persists, contact your Horizon FLEX administrator. Virtual Machine Is Revoked When you start your Horizon FLEX virtual machine, you receive a message that states your virtual machine has been revoked. Problem The message Access to this virtual machine has been revoked appears when you try to start your virtual machine in your Horizon FLEX Client. Cause Your Horizon FLEX administrator has revoked access to your virtual machine. Solution Ask your Horizon FLEX administrator to reactivate your virtual machine. Invalid Security Certificate When you try to connect to Horizon FLEX server or download a Horizon FLEX virtual machine, you receive a warning stating the security certificate is invalid. Problem You receive the message Invalid Security Certificate when you try to download a Horizon FLEX virtual machine. Cause This warning message appears when the Horizon FLEX server uses a self-signed certificate and your computer does not trust the certificate. Solution Verify with your Horizon FLEX administrator that the certificate is valid for the Horizon FLEX server. If the certificate is valid, select the Always trust this host with this certificate check box and click Connect Anyway. Horizon FLEX Client Is Not Compatible with the Server When you start the Horizon FLEX virtual machine, you cannot connect to the Horizon FLEX server because the client version that you are using is incompatible with the server version. Problem When you open a Horizon FLEX virtual machine or try to connect to the server, a message appears: You need to upgrade your client or The server is running a newer version than supported by this software. Please download a newer version to resolve this issue. VMware, Inc. 25

Cause The Horizon FLEX server requires that you use a specific Horizon FLEX Client version. Solution u Contact your Horizon FLEX administrator to find out the Horizon FLEX Client version to upgrade to. Horizon FLEX Client Cannot Open the Virtual Machine When you try to open a Horizon FLEX virtual machine for the first time, you receive a message that the restrictions management server could not be contacted. Problem When you try to open a Horizon FLEX virtual machine for the first time, the restrictions management server cannot be contacted. Cause This error occurs because your operating system does not trust the Horizon FLEX server's certificate. The error may also occur if the user is offline or the Horizon FLEX server is down. Solution 1 Verify with your Horizon FLEX administrator that the certificate is valid for the Horizon FLEX server. Important Do not perform this task if the certificate is not valid. 2 If you are using Fusion Pro, install the Horizon FLEX server's certificate on your Mac. a In your browser, go to the Horizon FLEX server URL. For example: b c d e f Accept the certificate warning to save the certificate. Open the KeyChain application. Find the certificate under login and drag it to System. Open the certificate under System. Expand the Trust button, select Use System Default, and close the certificate. Reopen the certificate under System, expand Trust, select Always Trust, and close the certificate. The certificate is now trusted for all users on the Mac. 3 If you are using Workstation Player, install the Horizon FLEX server's certificate on your Windows system. a In your browser, go to the Horizon FLEX URL. For example: b c d e f g Click the lock icon in the address bar. Click Certificate information. On the Details tab, click Copy to file and export the certificate to a file. Start MMC (mmc.exe). Select File > Add/Remove Snap-in. Click the Certificates snap-in and click Add. 26 VMware, Inc.

Chapter 4 Troubleshooting Horizon FLEX Virtual Machines h On the Certificates snap-in display, select Computer account and click Next. This setting is required by the Horizon FLEX server. i j k Select Local Computer and click Finish and then OK. In the left navigation pane, expand Certificates (Local Computer). Right-click on Trusted Root Certification Authorities and select All Tasks > Import. The Certificate Import Wizard opens. l m n Click Next. Browse for the root certificate file and click Next. Select Place all certificates in the following store: Trusted Root Certification Authorities and click Next, then click Finish. The certificate is now trusted for all users on your Windows computer. Changing the Memory and Processor Settings Is Not Allowed You cannot use the memory and processor settings option to change the settings on the Horizon FLEX virtual machine. Problem You cannot change the memory and processor settings on your Horizon FLEX virtual machine. Cause Your Horizon FLEX administrator has restricted the ability to change memory and processor settings on your virtual machine. Solution u Contact your Horizon FLEX administrator. Folder Sharing on the Virtual Machine Is Not Allowed You cannot use the folder sharing options on your Horizon FLEX virtual machine. Problem You cannot share folders on your Horizon FLEX virtual machine. The options are dimmed or unavailable. Cause Your Horizon FLEX administrator has restricted the ability to share folders on your virtual machine. Solution u Contact your Horizon FLEX administrator. Registration Error When Opening the Virtual Machine You receive a registration error when you try to open your Horizon FLEX virtual machine. Problem You cannot open or start your Horizon FLEX virtual machine. An error message states that the virtual machine has already been downloaded and registered. VMware, Inc. 27

Cause Your Horizon FLEX administrator has restricted the ability to create multiple instances of your virtual machine. Solution u Contact your Horizon FLEX administrator. USB Device Cannot Be Connected to the Virtual Machine The USB device cannot be connected to the Horizon FLEX virtual machine. Problem When you try to connect a USB device to the virtual machine, the USB device type is dimmed (unavailable). Cause Your Horizon FLEX administrator has restricted the ability to use the USB device type on your virtual machine. Depending on how the Horizon FLEX administrator configured the virtual machine policy, some USB device types might be allowed and some might be blocked. Solution u Contact your Horizon FLEX administrator. Virtual Machine Is Removed Your Horizon FLEX virtual machine is not visible on your desktop. Problem The virtual machine is not available or is not visible on your desktop. Cause Your Horizon FLEX administrator might have removed the virtual machine. Solution u Contact your Horizon FLEX administrator. 28 VMware, Inc.
