1 PANOPTO: Using Panopto in Canvas (Faculty) Panopto is a service that allows you to record and store video and audio (podcast) recordings and link them to your Canvas courses. Panopto recordings and webcasts automatically publish to the associated Canvas course, and can also be embedded directly into a Canvas page by an instructor. Panopto videos are stored in the cloud and both faculty and students have the ability to make and store recordings. NOTE: Videos and other large files should not be uploaded directly to Canvas. Rather, they should be stored on Google Drive or on Panopto and then linked to pages in Canvas. RECOMMENDATIONS: If practical, it s often best to record shorter videos (10-20 minutes) rather than longer sessions (hour long lectures). This will make it easier for students to find what they need and files will be smaller and easier to manage. Check your microphone and record a short test video before recording a long session. DOWNLOAD THE RECORDER Go into your Canvas course and choose Panopto Recordings from the menu on the left. Then click the Create button and choose Record a new session. Select the Mac or Windows version. Once it downloads, you will need to install it. NOTE: If you don t see Panopto Recordings listed in the menu on the left side of your course screen, go to Settings à Navigation and drag Panopto Recordings to the Course Navigation section at the top of the screen (or choose Enable from the gear icon) to activate it. Scroll down and click Save. You will now see the Panopto Recordings link in the Navigation menu. Revised August

2 ADD RECORDINGS Click on Panopto Recordings and you will be taken to the corresponding folder in Panopto, logged in as your Canvas account. Here you will see any content you have uploaded to your course folder. Revised August

3 You can launch the Panopto Recorder from the Panopto Create button or open the Recorder App directly from your computer (it will be in your Applications folder on your mac). If you are launching from your computer directly and not from the Create button found inside your Canvas course, you will need to click the Sign In button: Enter or select the server name as shown: su.hosted.panopto.com. Enter your Canvas login and password. Click the Login button. Then click the Authorize button. NOTE: It s a good idea to check the remember me box in case you lose your network connection. Once the app is open, Click Create New Recording and check the settings as shown below. Next to session, enter a name for the video. HINT: It s a really good idea to include the date and course ID as well as the title. This will make it easier to troubleshoot if something goes wrong and for you to manage your recordings. 4 If you are using PowerPoint, have your slides open and ready to enter Slide Show mode. Click the red Record button to begin recording. HINT: To engage students when speaking, look into the camera and avoid reading slides. Pause periodically and ask reflective questions. NOTE: PowerPoint slides with voice-over recorded narration will not play in Panopto. When you are finished recording, exit Slide Show mode (esc key) and then use the red Stop button. NOTE: Check to make sure the video has uploaded before quitting the app or logging out of the computer. You don t need to wait until it has finished processing. Once the video is uploaded, you can close the app. Panopto will process the video (usually within an hour), but you do not need to stay logged in while this process completes. Just login to Canvas later to make sure the file is there. If you click Manage Online Recordings, you can see your video and the Share button will give you a link you can share with your students or allow you to add them to your folder. Revised August

5 Upload Existing Video into Panopto Click All Folders or My Folders on the lefthand column and choose the folder where the session will be created. Click the Create option on the top panel after choosing your folder. When you click Create a dropdown menu of options appears. For uploading video, you will choose the Upload media option. Under Actions, drag and drop the video file or click Browse to select the file. Wait for Uploading/Processing to finish, which may take a while based on the size and amount of files. Once processed, the session can be edited right away. Once the publishing completes, you will be notified that it is safe to close the window. Revised August

6 Create Assignment Folder for Students to Upload Videos Login to your Canvas course and select Panopto Recordings from the left navigation menu. Then choose the gear icon in the upper right. In the screen that appears, choose Create Assignment Folder. You can then close that window. To upload their work, students will click on Panopto Recordings and then choose the assignment folder and then use the Record a new session or Upload media option under Create. Insert a Video into a Canvas Page Navigate to the *page where you want to insert the link. Then choose the Panopto icon as shown below. * Create a new page by choosing Pages from the left-hand menu and then choose All Pages and then the +Page button and give it a title. Streaming vs. Downloading By default, students can both view the video online (Stream) as well as download it for later viewing. If you want to limit this to streaming only, change the folder settings as shown below to No one. Optional: Subscribing to Automatic Downloads Students can subscribe to get recordings downloaded automatically by subscribing to a RSS (really simply syndication) feed when they are in Panopto.
