These resources include high quality digital images in a safe search environment, as well as instructional videos. Teachers log in to DES using the following: Username: humble_novellusername (ex: humble_pparker) Password: six digit Munis ID # Add zeros at the beginning if your Munis # is less than six digits.(ex: ) Students log in to DES using: Username: humble_id# (ex: humble_123456) Password: ID# (ex: ) 1. 4 Gathering Images and Giving Credit to Your Sources When you create multimedia presentations using images from the Internet, you need to be sure you are following the Fair Use Guidelines for Multimedia in Education to avoid violating copyright law. This includes not using more than five images per artist/photography/website and also giving credit to the source by showing the URL where the image is located. This handout will help you do that. 1. Create a new folder on the desktop of your computer and give the folder a name. 2. Open PowerPoint and add several new, blank slides. In the Layout Menu, click Blank. Click the New Slide Button 10 times. Each new slide should have the blank layout. 3. Click File\Save As and save the PowerPoint in your folder. 4. Minimize the window. 5. Open an internet browser. Search for photos or clipart from the sources you choose. 6. Select an image. If it is a thumbnail, click to enlarge it. 7. Right click on the image and select copy. (Do not close this screen.) 8. Maximize the PowerPoint window. Right click and paste the copied image on the first blank slide. The order of images does not matter. 9. Navigate back to the internet window with the FULL SIZE image that you copied. Now, right click again and select Copy Shortcut. 10. Maximize the PowerPoint window. 11. Right click and paste the URL on the slide with the matching image. Reposition the text box, change the font size and color as necessary. 4

12. Click Save. 13. Navigate back to the internet to continue finding images then follow the steps to copy and paste the images and URLs. 14. During the course of finding images, save the PowerPoint as often as necessary. When completely finished collecting images and citing sources, save the PowerPoint document in the following way to change all slides into separate.jpeg image files. These files can be inserted into any document for illustration complete with documentation! Here s how! 15. Click File\Save As. Use the drop down arrow in the Save In: box to select your folder. 16. Change the file type to JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpg) 17. Click Save. A folder will be generated in the save as location with all slides converted to individual.jpg image files. 18. On the next pop-up window, select Every Slide. 19. Your images are now ready to use in a PhotoStory, MovieMaker, or other multimedia presentation. Image from website. Image is now documented with URL. Using PowerPoint as a photo editor CROPPING PICTURES IN POWERPOINT: Sometimes when we paste pictures in Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel we get it very big in the picture's regular shape which may look odd or we may require it to be cut to required shape. Steps to Crop the Pictures: 5

1) To insert a picture into your Office document, click the Picture button on the Insert tab 2) When we click on the picture we get a Picture Format Tab. Click on Crop Image on Format tab. 3) Click on any of the four corners to crop from any side and drag it to the required shape. 4) Press and hold the CTRL key while you drag a corner cropping handle inward to crop equally on all four sides. 5) To accept the current dimensions and crop the photo, press escape or click anywhere outside the cropping area. The Picture will be cropped in the selected area. 6

REMOVE THE BACKGROUND OF A PICTURE: In Word 2010, PowerPoint 2010 and Excel 2010 you can remove a background from a picture to accent or highlight the subject of the picture or to remove distracting detail Original Picture Same picture with background removed NOTE: Compressing a picture to reduce the size of the file changes the amount of detail retained in the source picture. This means that after compression, the picture can look different from before it was compressed. Because of this, you should compress the picture and save the file, before removing the background. You can redo the compression even after you save the file as long as you have not closed the program that you are working in, if the compression plus the background removal is not the look you want. To Remove the Background: 1. Click the picture that you want to remove the background from. 2. Under Picture Tools, on the Format tab, in the Adjust group, click Background Removal. If you do not see Background Removal or the Picture Tools tab, make sure that you have selected a picture. You may have to double-click the picture to select it and open the Format tab 3. Click one of the handles on the marquee lines and then drag the line so that it contains the portion of the picture that you wish to keep and excludes most of the areas you wish to remove. Original picture showing background removal lines 7

4. If necessary, do one or both of the following: a. To indicate which parts of the picture you do not want automatically removed, click Mark Areas to Keep. b. To indicate which parts of the picture you do want removed in addition to those automatically marked, click Mark Areas to Remove Background Removal tab TIP: If you change your mind about an area you have marked with a line, either to keep or to remove it, click Delete Mark and then click the line to change it. 5. Click Keep Changes in the Close group. NOTE: To cancel the automatic background removal click, Discard All Changes in the Close group You can add effects such as shadows, reflections, and glows, to a picture from which you have removed the background. These effects will apply only to the visible picture. For example, if you apply a shadow to the picture, only the part of the picture you kept when you removed the background will cast a shadow. TIP: If you are using PowerPoint, you can still save the original version of the picture, even though you have removed the background of your picture. Getting Videos from YouTube All videos should be downloaded before playing them in the classroom to avoid any inappropriate adds or video previews in the interface and also to preserve district bandwidth and avoid buffering. If you find a YouTube video that you want to use in your classroom, 1. Click on the Show More button below the video. 2. Click on the Download button. 8

3. Choose Save. 4. Navigate to where you want to save the video file. It is recommended that you save to the desktop of the computer where you will be playing the video. You can save a copy of the video on your network directory if you need to, but playing the video from your network directory still uses network resources. Videos should be downloaded and played from the desktop/hard drive of the computer. 5. If you have the RealPlayer browser record plugin installed, you may see a Download button when you float your mouse above the upper right corner of the video. You can also download a video using this RealPlayer option. 9

Converting files with ZamZar.com Some cameras create file types that are not compatible with MovieMaker, PowerPoint, or other software. If you need to convert a file that you already have on your computer, you can also use ZamZar.com for that. 1. Go to (a free converter). 2. Click the Convert Files Tab. 3. In the Step 1 box, click the Browse button. Look on your computer and find the video you want to convert. Double click on it, or click once and then click Open. 4. In the Step 2 box, select wmv as the file type that you want. 5. In the Step 3 box, type your address. 6. In the Step 4 box click the convert button. You will get a pop-up message confirming your conversion details. Click OK. 7. Below the box with the steps above you will see a progress bar showing the progress of your upload. 10

8. When the upload is complete you will see this message: 9. Check your account. If you used your GroupWise account (recommended) the notification will go to your junk mail folder. 10. Open the and click on the link. 11. Click on the Download Now button. 11

12. Click Save, and then select a location to save to. You can save to your desktop and copy the file to a flash drive, or you can save directly to the flash drive. Other free resources for converting file types Any Video Converter: See your campus IT about getting this free converter installed on your district computer. - Free version only does low resolution video types. - You have to create an account, but you get 200 MB for free. 12
