Combi-Reader Owner s manual General information Congratulations for the purchase of your Combi- Reader X15! This innovative and easy to use Optical Reader has a built-in intelligent interface which decodes characters such as OCR-B, MICR (E-13B) and all major 1-D barcodes with an outstanding reliability. Once the scanning action is completed, the information is automatically and immediately directed to your active Windows application. Technical specifications Size: Weight: Cable length: Reading speed: Font Types: Character size: Barcode Types: Barcode Resolution: OS 135 x 40 x 25-mm 45-g (95-g incl. 2 Installation guide for Windows users Insert the Installation CD into your CD drive before connecting your Combi-Reader X15 to the USB port of your computer. Run the setup.exe program. If necessary, it will install the Microsoft.net environment; then, follow the installation procedure proposed by the Windows installer (see print screens 1 to 4 below). Do not remove the CD. Connect the Combi-Reader X15 and follow the installation procedure for the USB driver (see print screens 5 to 8 below). Software installation Page - 2 -

User guide for Windows users An icon in the System Tray indicates that the application is running as shown in the figure below. Settings for the Combi-Reader X15 In the System Tray, right click on the X15 icon and select Settings. General Four settings are available: 1. Scanning direction 2. Automatic shut down of the X15 3. Activation of the X15 By clicking inside the X15 picture it is possible to control the state on/off of the X15. You can also activate the X15 by clicking once on the X15 icon located in the System tray 4. By clicking on Restore original settings users will delete all parameters they might have set for the X15. Page - 4 -
Code Users can select the codes to be read by the X15. The following selections are available: 1. 1-D barcodes (it auto-discriminates between the following codes: Code 39, Interleaved 2/5, CODABAR, Code 128, EAN 8 and EAN Code Interleaved 2/5 4. CODABAR 5. Code EAN EAN 8 8. OCR-B Swiss Post 9. OCR-B Eurobanking 10. OCR-B 43 classes 11. MICR (E-13B) By clicking on Configure, users will be able to set important parameters for each of the different codes that can be selected. A good use of the option Configure will significantly improve the reading performance of the X15. We encourage users to carefully set the parameters for his/her application and therefore obtain the best reading performance out of the X15. The following programming can be achieved: 1. The code length can be defined with min. and max. For instance an output will only be given if the code length is comprised between 8 and 14 characters. 2. A template can be set so that it matches the structure of the codes, which need to be read. For instance if the code structure is always three (3) letters, followed by six (6) numbers and ending by two (2) signs, then the template shall be LLLNNNNNNSS. 3. Prefix and Postfix can also be set. That means that character(s)/ commands can be entered before and after the code, which needs to be read. For instance X15 can be entered as a Prefix and the simulation of the key Return can be programmed as the Postfix. Page - 5 -
Important remark When users select 1-D Barcodes, the button Configure is deactivated. This is a correct behaviour of the software. The reason is that, while scanning, the settings of the scanned barcode are taken as the reference. For instance when users select 1-D Barcodes and scan a Code 39 then the settings for Code 39 will be taken into consideration. When users scan Code 128 then the settings for Code 128 will be taken as the reference and so on for the other codes (e.g CODABAR, 2/5 Interleaved, EAN 8, EAN 13). To guarantee the best performance, we suggest that before selecting the option 1-D Barcodes, users shall carefully check the desired settings for all proposed barcodes. Sequence Users can define code-reading sequences. It is an extremely useful feature when users need to read different types of codes one after the other without having to select the codes manually. By clicking on Add, the following window pops up. Users can define as many sequences as they want and create as many steps as they require within the defined sequence(s). For instance a sequence can be composed of a serie of codes then followed by text and/or commands. A large flexibility is given to the users to define the most appropriate sequence(s) they need for their application(s). Page - 6 -
Language Users can select five (5) different languages for users interaction, namely: 1. English 2. French 3. German 4. Italian 5. Spanish Page - 7 -
Useful scanning hints Start scanning on a blank area (quiet zone) in front of the code line and stop scanning on a blank area after the code line as shown in the figure below. Hold the device vertically. To guarantee best performance, do not tilt the X15 more than 10. Move the device from left to right or right to left depending on the selected scanning direction (see settings for the Combi-Reader X15) Keep the codeline within the U shape window of your X15. Right-hand mode Please note: The X15 logo must be facing up as shown in the above picture. Left-hand mode Please note: The X15 logo must be facing down as shown in the above picture. Page - 8 -
Troubleshooting 1. You do not know whether or not your OS can be used with the X15 Check recommended computer environment on page 1 2. Your computer does not recognize your X15 Securely connect your X15 to the USB interface of your computer Make sure that the USB port is enabled on your computer If other USB connectors are connected to other equipment besides the keyboard, the mouse and the X15, then disconnect the USB cables except for those connected to the keyboard, the mouse and the X15 The USB driver is not installed, please refer to page 2 and 3 3. Your X15 does not read well The OCR-B and MICR characters, as well as the barcodes are not well printed. Ensure that those characters and barcodes are printed on white or light coloured paper (refer to EAN/AIM/CEN specifications) with dark fonts or bars with sufficient contrast. A mistake in the configuration of your codes can also prevent correct readings. Check your code length, template, prefix and postfix programming. Should the problem persist, reset the X15 to the original settings and try scanning again. A sequence is activated but the codes being scanned do not match the steps of the sequence which were programmed. Check your sequence(s) and if necessary reset the X15 to the original settings. For other reading problems, please refer to the Useful scanning hints on page 8. Important remarks If you connect two or more USB equipment to a single computer at the same time, some equipment, including your X15, may not operate depending on the type of USB equipment. Operations are not guaranteed when using a USB hub. Operations are not guaranteed for all the recommended computer environments mentioned on page 1. The recommended OS must be installed at the factory. Operation is not assured in an environment upgraded to the operating systems described on page 1 or in multi-boot environment. Page - 9 -
