1 Workshops Introduction The Workshops are all about being creative and thinking outside of the box. These orkshops ill help your right-brain soar, hile making your left-brain happy; by explaining hy things ork the ay they do. Exploring Sno Leopard's possibilities is great fun; hoever, alays stay grounded ith knoledge of ho things ork. Knoledge is poer. Getting and Using the Project Files Some projects in the Workshops may include a start file to help you get started ith the project, and a final file to provide you ith the results so you can see ho ell you accomplished the task. The first step in a project specifics hether you need a project file to complete it. Before you can use the project files, you need to donload them from the Web. You can access the files at.perspection.com. After you donload the files from the Web, uncompress the files into a folder on your hard drive to hich you have easy access from Sno Leopard. Project : Customizing the Desktop Skills and Tools: Desktop, Finder, Stacks, Exposé, and Misc. If your desktop gets cluttered, you can change vie options or use stacks of folders ith documents or applications to access material you re currently orking on. If your dock starts to get cluttered, you can minimize indos to the associated application icon on the left-side of the dock instead of minimizing indos to the right-side of the dock. With Dock Exposé, you can display and sitch beteen indos in an easy to vie grid ith indo titles. The Project In this project, you'll display and customize the desktop and Finder to meet your orkspace needs. You ll change vie options for the desktop, create stacks,and use Dock Exposé to sitch indos, minimize indos to the dock into an application icon. In addition, you ll sho the date in the menu bar, sho more commands in the menu bar, zoom desktop icons using the trackpad, and learn ho to quickly get your Mac s serial number for support purposes. With the Sho Vie Options command for the Desktop, you can change icon size, grid spacing, text size, label position, sho item info, sho icon previe, and set the default arrange by vie. In the Finder, click a blank area of the desktop, click the Vie menu, and then click Sho Vie Options. Change any of the folloing desktop options: Icon size. Drag the slider to specify an icon size. Grid spacing. Drag the slider to specify a grid size. A grid is an internal set of horizontal and vertical lines for spacing items on the desktop. Text size. Select a text size for desktop icons. Label position. Select the Bottom or Right option to specify the icon text position. Sho item info. Select the check box to display icon item information, such as picture size for a graphic icon or disk space for a disk drive icon. Sho icon previe. Select the check box to sho a previe of the item in the icon. Arrange by. Select an option (None, Snap to Grid, Name, Date Modified, Date Created, Size, Kind, Label) to specify ho you ant to arrange icons on the desktop. Click the Close button in the Desktop dialog. Use Dock Exposé to sitch indos. With Dock Exposé, you can display indos in a grid, sho their titles, and zoom in and out using the Space bar. Dock Exposé is also drag aare, hich allos you to drag an item from the desktop to a dock icon and hold it to start Dock Exposé and then drop the item in a indo. For example, you could drag an item to the Mail icon on the dock to start Dock Exposé, and then drop it into an opened Mail message. In the Finder, click-hold a dock icon to display Exposé. To arrange indos, press A+ (by name), A+ (by application), or press Tab to vie all indos belonging to an application. To zoom in and out, point to a indo, and then press the Space bar. To sitch to a indo, click the indo.

3 Minimize indos to the dock into an application icon. Instead of minimizing indos to the right-side of the dock, you can minimize indos to the associated application icon on the left-side of the dock. This is useful for organization and keeping the dock uncluttered. You on t be able to see ho many indos you have minimized at a glance on the dock, but ith Dock Exposé, a thin line separates the regular indos from the minimized indos at the bottom. In the Finder, click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences. Click the Dock icon. Select the Minimize indos into application icon check box. Click the Close button in the System Preferences dialog. Sho the date in the menu bar. The Date and Time Preferences dialog provides options to sho the date in the menu bar. In the Finder, click the Day and Time on the menu bar, and then click Date and Time Preferences, or click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Date & Time. Click the Clock tab. Select the Sho date check box. Click the Close button in the System Preferences dialog. Sho more commands in the menu bar. The right-side of the menu bar in the Finder provides utility or preference specific menus for easy access. When you click a menu icon, a menu ith commands appears. For some menus, such as Sync, Airport, and Sound, you can also option-click the menu icon to display additional commands. For example, hen you click the Sound menu icon, a volume slider appears. When you optionclick the Sound menu icon, a list of commands appear here you can select Output and Input Devices or open Sound Preferences. Zoom desktop icons using the trackpad. The multi-touch trackpad allos you to make the desktop icons bigger or smaller. To make the desktop icons bigger or smaller by touching the trackpad, pinch the trackpad and extend it to zoom out and pinch it in to zoom in. If you have an older generation MacBook or MacBook Pro that didn t have fourfinger and three-finger trackpad gestures, Sno Leopard provides this gesture provided that you have a supported model (check the Apple eb site for specific models). TROUBLE? If you have a lot of icons on your desktop, enlarging and reducing the icons can rearrange them on the desktop. Get your Mac s serial number. If you ever need to call Apple support for help, the first thing they ill probably ask for is your Mac s serial number. Here is a quick ay to display it. Click the Apple menu, click About this Mac, and then double-click the version number. Your serial number is displayed. Workshops

4 E00MXSL.qxp 9/0/009 0: AM Page Project : Organizing and Managing Files Skills and Tools: Stacks and Dock If your desktop gets cluttered or you ant easy access to folders, you can create stacks of documents, applications, or folders on the dock to make it easier to organize and access material you re currently orking on. A stack allos you to open folders to find and open the documents or applications you ant. When a stack is in Grid vie, you can also scroll stacks and navigate in and out of folders. The Project In this project, you'll create a stack, change stack options to vie contents in Grid vie, open a folder stack, and then return back to the parent folder. The Process In the Finder or on the desktop, drag a folder to the right-side of the dock to add the folder to the dock for easy access. Option-click the folder stack icon on the dock, and then click Grid. Click the folder stack icon on the dock to display a folder grid. In Grid vie, use the scroll bar along the right-side (if available) to display the contents of the stack. To open a folder, click the folder icon. To return back to the parent folder, click the Return button in the upper-left corner of the folder grid. Click a blank area of the desktop or press ESC to close the stack. Take a screen capture of the screen. If you need a picture of the screen, you can take a screen capture of it using the Shift+A+ (full screen) or Shift+A+ (select screen or press Space bar to capture a indo) keyboard shortcut. In Leopard, the file name appears as Picture.png. In Sno Leopard, the file name is much more useful. The file name appears as Screen shot ith the date and time. For example, Screen shot at.. AM.png.

5 Project : Finding What You Need Skills and Tools: Spotlight If you re looking for specific content on your computer or netork and you don t kno here to find it, you can use Spotlight to help you locate it. Spotlight not only searches the names of your files and folders, it also searches their content. Spotlight is conveniently located on the right side of the menu bar on your Mac screen. You can identify Spotlight by the blue icon ith a magnifying glass. As you type in Spotlight, a menu appears displaying a list of everything Spotlight can find to match hat you ve typed so far. As you continue to type, the list changes. Spotlight searches for everything on your computer that matches hat you ve typed, unless you ve changed your default search location. The Project In this project, you'll set the default search location you ant, change Spotlight preferences, and then perform a search in Spotlight. The Process Change default search location. With the Finder Preferences dialog, you can change the default search location for Spotlight. In the Finder, click the Finder menu, and then click Preferences. Click the Advanced tab. Click the When performing a search pop-up, click Search This Mac, Search the Current Folder, or Use the Previous Search Scope. Click the Close button in the Finder Preferences dialog. Change Spotlight preferences. With the System Preferences dialog, you can specify hat types of items you ant to include in your search results. Click the System Preferences icon in the Dock, and then click the Spotlight icon. Click the Search Results tab. Select the check boxes you ant to include in the search results or clear the check boxes you don t ant to include in the search results. To change the order to the search results categories, drag the categories to the location you ant. Click the Close button. Workshops

6 E00MXSL.qxp 9/0/009 0: AM Page Perform a Spotlight search. With Spotlight available on the right side of the menu bar, you can quickly find hat you re looking for ith a fe clicks. Click the Spotlight (magnifying-glass) icon on the right side of the menu bar. TIMESAVER Press Option+A+Space bar to open Spotlight indo directly. In the Spotlight field, start to type hat you ant to find. Click Sho All on the Spotlight menu. The Spotlight indo opens, displaying the results of your search by category. If a search is currently in progress, a sprocket icon hirls around in the upperleft corner of the indo. To narro or change the search, type the text you ant to find in the Search field. To open an item, doubleclick the item or use the arro keys to scroll don the list, and then press Return. To clear or stop a search, click the Close button (x) in the Search field. When you re done, click the Close button. ichat buddy search in Spotlight. If you have a lot of buddies in ichat, you can use Spotlight to help you find them. Search Faces and Places from iphoto in Spotlight. If you use iphoto 09, you can use Spotlight to search for Faces and Places. No you don t have to open iphoto to find the pictures you ant.

7 Project : Securing Your Computer Skills and Tools: Security Preferences The Security pane in System Preferences allos you to set options that prevent others from using your computer, such as requiring a passord to unlock and change system preferences or ake your computer from sleep or screen saver, logging you out automatically if you re inactive for a certain amount of time (make sure you save all documents to complete logging you out), and disabling automatic login all together. The Security pane also lets you turn on or off FileVault, hich protects your Home folder using encryption (secrets codes) from unauthorized users. Your files are encrypted using your login passord. If you forget your login passord and don t have the master passord (a safety net passord that lets you unlock any FileVault account), your files are lost forever. The Project In this project, you'll set system security preferences, hich includes general and FileVault options. The Process Change system security preferences. With the Finder Preferences dialog, you can change the default search location for Spotlight. Click the System Preferences icon in the Dock, and then click the Security icon. Click the General tab. Select or clear the Require passord after sleep or screen save begin check box, click the pop-up, and then select a delay interval. Select or clear the check boxes related to all user accounts: Disable automatic login. Require passord to unlock each System Preferences pane. Log out after X minutes of inactivity. Use secure virtual memory. Disable Location Services. Disable remote control infrared receiver. Workshops

8 Click the FileVault tab. To set or change a master passord (something you never ant to forget), click Set Master Passord or Change, type the information, and then click OK. Click the Close button. Protect your Home folder ith FileVault. With the Finder Preferences dialog, you can change the default search location for Spotlight. Click the System Preferences icon in the Dock, and then click the Security icon. Click the FileVault tab. Click Turn On FileVault (all other uses must be logged off the computer). Read the alert message if users are logged in, and then click OK. Type your passord, and then click OK. Another alert message appears, please read it carefully, select the secure check box options you ant, and then click Cancel or Turn On FileVault. Sno Leopard then goes through a creation procedure that can take 0 minutes or more to complete. When the process is complete, you are brought back to the Login indo. Project : Using Parental Controls 8 Skills and Tools: Parental Controls Parental Controls help you manage ho your children use the computer. Parental Controls allos you to set limits on your children s Web access, Mail and ichat usage, the amount of time spent logged on the computer, and hich games and programs they can use. After you have set up a user account as the Administrator, you can enable and set parental controls. You can set different settings for each user account on your computer. You can also revie activity report logs on a periodic basis to see hat your children are doing on the computer. The Project In this project, you'll change parental controls for content and time limits, and vie log activity.

9 The Process Click the System Preferences icon in the Dock, and then click the Parental Controls icon. Select the account you ant to modify, and then click Enable Parental Controls, if necessary. TROUBLE? If the accounts aren t available, click the Lock icon, enter the administrator name and passord, and then click OK Click the Content tab. Select or clear the Hide profanity in Dictionary check box. Select one of the folloing options: Allo unrestricted access to ebsites. Try to limit access to adult ebsites automatically. Click Customize to specify sites. Allo access to only these ebsites. Click the Add (+) and Remove (-) buttons to add and delete items from the alloable Web site list. Click the Time Limits tab. Specify options for the folloing time limits: Weekday time limits. Weekend time limits. Bedtime. Click the Logs tab. Click the Sho activity for popup, and then select a length option. Click the Group by popup, and then click Website or Date. Select any of the folloing options to vie log information: 8 Websites Visited. Websites Blocked. Applications. ichat. Click the Close button. 10 Project : Working ith Netorks Skills and Tools: Netorks The Finder serves as a focused netork broser application. From the Go menu, you can access the Netork indo, hich displays all the computers available on your netork. You can also access a netork from the Sidebar, hich displays all shared computers. Once you've connected several computers together into a netork, and configured your computer for file sharing, the next step is to begin communicating. In order to communicate ith another computer, you ll need connect to create a connection ith access to a user account. Typically a user account defines you ith a specific name, passord, and permissions. Once you log into the other computer, you ll be able to access the areas (permissions) granted to you by the Systems Administrator. The Project In this project, you'll connect to a computer server on a netork, and then brose the contents of the computer using the Finder. The Process Turn on all the computers. Type Server Address Click the Go menu, and then click Connect To Server. Recent Servers Connect using one of the folloing methods: 0 Click Brose, and then double-click on one of the available server icons. Type the computer's Server Address, and then click Connect. Windos (SMB/CIFS). Example: smb://dnsname/sharename; smb://ipaddress/sharename Macintosh (AFP). Example: afp://computername.companyname.com FTP. Example: ftp://user@dnsname; ftp://dnsname; ftp://user:passord@ DNSname NFS. Example: nfs://dnsname/pathname Click the Recent Servers button, and then select a server address from the list of available options.

11 Type your Name and Passord. Click Connect. Select the area of the other computer you ant to access. Click OK. IMPORTANT The other computer no functions and acts as a hard drive on your computer. 8 Click the netork computer icon in the Sidebar to display its contents or click the Go menu, click Netork to display all netorks, and then double-click a netork computer to brose its contents Work ith your computer; drag files from your computer to the netorked computer or vice versa. TROUBLE? If the netorked computer is not set up for file sharing, see Setting Up File Sharing on page 0 and see Setting Up Mac and Windos to Share Files on page for instructions on setting up file sharing.
