Pro Tools Getting Started Creating a New Session Load the Session Template located in the dock by clicking on it. or Press COMMAND+N to create a new session Enter the Session Name in the Save As box. Session names should follow the Digidesign File Management Conventions. Verify the Session Parameters are correct: - Audio File Type: BWF (.WAV) - Sample Rate: 48 khz - Bit Depth: 24 bit - I/O Settings: Venue D-Show Creating New Audio Tracks Press COMMAND+SHIFT+N to add new tracks. - Enter the number of tracks you would like to create in the Create box. - Select Mono or Stereo from the dropdown list - Select Audio Track from the dropdown list - Select Samples Common Keyboard Shortcuts SPACEBAR!!! COMMAND+=!!! COMMAND+N!!! COMMAND+SHIFT+W!! Start/Stop Playback Cycle view between the Mix and Edit windows Create a new session Close a session 1

Pro Tools Navigating Pro Tools Navigating Pro Tools There are two main windows for Pro Tools: The Edit Window and the Mix Window. Edit Window Mix Window 2

Pro Tools Navigating Pro Tools You can select either window from the Window menu dropdown or you can cycle between the two by pressing COMMAND+=. The Edit Window The Edit Window is where you will spend the most time working. The Edit Window displays audio for the session in a timeline fashion. The center of the window features the tracks for the session. Along the top of the window youʼll find the toolbar which contains tools for editing the session along with counters and transport controls.. The Tracks List along the left of the window lists all the tracks in the session. Tracks can be hidden or shown by clicking the dot. The Groups List along the left of the window displays a list of all track groups for the session. Groups can be activated or deactivated by clicking on the group name. Active groups are highlighted. Use EXTREME CAUTION if using the All group. The Regions List on the right side of the window displays the audio regions in use for the session. Pro Tools manages audio as regions. Regions may be complete audio files or edited sections of a complete audio file. Editing in Pro Tools is non-desctructive so regions on an audio track may be trimmed without altering the original data. The Track, Group, and Region Lists may be hidden by clicking on the arrows at the bottom of the column. There is also a drop down menu available by clicking on the down arrow at the top of the list. 3

Pro Tools Navigating Pro Tools The Edit Window Toolbar The edit window toolbar features commonly used editing tools. Edit Tools There are three main editing tools. The Trimmer, the Selector, and the Grabber. Clicking on the tools in the toolbar will change the cursor into that editing tool. The Trimmer allows you to trim the head or tail of an audio region. The Selector allows you to select a section along a track. Just click and drag to select. The Selector is also used to place the playback head on an audio track. Just click where you want audio to start. The Grabber allows you to grab a region of audio and drag it forward or backwards in time or onto another audio track. Clicking and holding on the Grabber or Trimmer tools will display a dropdown list of some different variations of those tools. These different variations are more useful for advanced editing and should be avoided by Pro Tools newbies until they have a good understanding of the basic versions. Edit Modes There are four Edit Modes. Edit Modes determine how audio regions can be moved along the timeline. Slip mode is the most commonly used. Slip allows users to drag audio anywhere on the timeline. Shuffle mode allows you to shuffle regions on the timeline. Spot mode is for precisely placing regions in time. Clicking on a region while in Spot mode will bring up a window to enter time information for where the region should start. Grid mode snaps regions to a grid. The grid can be either time based or music based for use when working with defined tempos. 4

Pro Tools Navigating Pro Tools Zoom Controls The zoom controls provide a quick way to zoom in or out. The waveform zoom control allows users to zoom in and out on the height of the waveform on a track. The region zoom control zooms in and out on the timeline. Track Height Tracks in the edit window can be made bigger or smaller as needed. There are two ways to change track height. The first way is to drag the split between tracks up or down. The second is to click just to the right of the meters and select a height. 5

Pro Tools Navigating Pro Tools The Mix Window The Mix Window appears much like a traditional mixer giving us a view of the different tracks in a session. Each track features traditional console features such as inserts, sends, and input and output settings. Clicking on any of these will bring up menus for user selection. Double-clicking on the Track Name will allow a user to enter the name of that track. NOTE: Each track must have a unique name. Along the left side of the window are the Track List and the Group List. These function the same as they do in the Edit Window. 6

Pro Tools Recording Recording Audio Arm Tracks First arm the tracks you want to record on. Do this by clicking the Track Record Enable button on the tracks you want to record on. Holding OPTION and clicking a Track Record Enable button will arm all tracks for recording. Arm the Transport Click the Record button on the transport to arm the transport for recording. Record Press Play to begin recording. 7

Pro Tools Commands Keyboard Focus The Commands Keyboard Focus activates all the great hot-keys that can perform a lot of Pro Tools functions without having to find them on a menu. Commands keys do things like separate or trim regions, change edit tools or modes, and zoom in and out in the Edit Window. If you have a keyboard with labels or an overlay, the functions listed are the Command Keys. To use the Commands Keyboard Focus, it is important to make sure they are turned on. In the Edit Window locate the a-z button in the upper right of the tracks area. If you look around the window, youʼll see a few of these located in some different places, but you want the one at the upper right of the tracks. Click it to highlight it, and the Commands will be active. 8

Pro Tools Exporting 2 Track MP3ʼs Basic Editing - How To Export 2 Track MP3ʼs Start by navigating to the Edit Window. Find the 2 Track Master tracks and zoom in on them so you can see what youʼre doing. Separate Regions Scroll to the left and right until you find the sections of audio you want to make into MP3ʼs. Once youʼve located the area, you need to separate the audio into regions that you can export. You can do this a couple of ways. Highlight a section of audio using the selector tool and then use the Separate Region command. Alternately, use the selector to place the cursor where you want to break up the region and then use the Separate Region command. The Separate Region command can be accomplished using a hot-key or by using the command in the Edit menu in the menubar. Highlighting a section of audio is faster, but dropping the cursor is typically more accurate. 9

Pro Tools Exporting 2 Track MP3ʼs Name the Regions Once the regions are separated, they need to be properly named. The simplest way to do this is to select the Grabber tool and doubleclick on each region. Export the Regions Once everything is named, we can export the regions. First select the regions either on the timeline or in the Region list. Next select the Export Regions as Files command from the Region list dropdown menu. Use the drop down lists to set the proper parameters: File Type: MP3 Format: Stereo Bit Depth: 16 bit Sample Rate: 44.1 khz Conversion Quality: Tweak Head Click on Choose... to select a destination directory. Make sure you know where the files will be going. Click Export... once you are finished. 10

Pro Tools Exporting 2 Track MP3ʼs The MP3 window will open next. Set the Encoding Speed to Slowest and the bit rate to the desired quality(256 is recommended). Next fill in the ID3 Tag Info. Click OK when finished to proceed. 11
