2 Your network folders Your network folders at Kent are: a safe place to store and back up your work available from your own laptop or a student PC accessible from on and off campus Where to find your folders Students If you re using a student PC, save your work to the Documents folder (found on the Z drive). It s your personal folder on the Kent network. You can store up to 1GB. You can browse to your folder from any student PC: click Start, then File Explorer open the folder containing your IT account username. Staff Shared folders Your department can apply for access to shared folders if needed. To set up your access to shared folders or resources, an authorised colleague needs to apply on your behalf: Your personal file storage You have a personal folder with up to 1GB of storage on the Kent network: click Start then Computer (Windows 7 / 8) / File Explorer (Windows 10) open the folder containing your IT account name. Your personal folder(s) contain(s) your IT account username. They are generally set up on your X or Z drive(s), or on your departmental drive. Don t save to the Documents folder or the Desktop. They are not networked or backed up. 2

3 Access your files from your laptop How to map a network drive (Windows) 1. Go to the Map Network Drive option for your Windows version: Windows 10: from the Desktop, click the Windows icon (bottom left), then File Explorer. Right click This PC (left menu), then Map network drive... Windows 8: from the Desktop, click File Explorer (bottom left), then Computer (left menu). Choose Map Network Drive from the top ribbon. Windows 7: click Start, then Computer, then Map Network Drive (top menu). 2. Input your folder s full network name in the Folder box: To find out the full name of your Z drive, login to this web page: For other folders on the network, enter: \\servername.kent.ac.uk\foldername 3. If you intend to use the folder regularly, make sure Reconnect at logon or Reconnect at Sign-in is ticked so that the folder is always available. 4. Tick Connect using different credentials, then Finish. If using Vista, click different user name/connect using a different user name. Enter your Kent IT account username in this format: UKC\abc1 replace abc1 with your own username it won t work if you don t include UKC\ 5. Click OK. A window appears with your folder contents displayed. How to disconnect a mapped drive: Right-click on the folder and select Disconnect. 3

4 How to map a network drive (Mac) Mac OS 10.7 and above 1. In the Finder menu (top of screen) click Go then Connect to Server. If the Finder menu is not at the top, click Finder from the Dock. 2. In the Server Address box type your folder name: to find out the full name of your Z drive, log in to this web page: for other folders on the network, enter: smb://servername.kent.ac.uk/foldername 3. Click Connect. A Connecting To Server progress box appears, and another box asking for a server name and password. Enter your IT Account details. Enter your Kent IT account username in this format: UKC\abc1 replace abc1 with your own username it won t work if you don t include UKC\ 4. Click OK. A window appears with your folder contents displayed. 5. In the Finder menu (top of the screen), click File, Add To Sidebar: this adds a shortcut to the folder on the left of your Finder window for easy access. To disconnect a mapped drive Click and drag the folder to the Trash can on the Dock. Access your files from off campus Once you ve mapped a drive to your folder, you can access it off campus. You ll need to use the VPN (Virtual Private Network) to connect to our network. Set up your VPN connection Search the Kent website for VPN for full details. You ll need to: complete the online registration form optimise your security settings remove/disable file sharing options download and run the VPN setup tool 4

5 Limitations of the VPN If you use a Mac, iphone or ipad with the VPN, don t upgrade to Sierra or ios10. We re working on a solution and will VPN users to let them know when it s been fixed. Some services including SharePoint and OWA (Outlook Web access) don t work with Windows 10 over the VPN. You ll need to disconnect from VPN to use them until Microsoft fix this.
