RITIS Training Module 10 Script Welcome to the Regional Integrated Transportation Information System or RITIS Module 10 CBT. To begin, select the start button or press Shift+N on your keyboard. To return to the Florida Analytics main page, select Florida Analytics Tools in the upper left corner of the page. To access the Bottleneck Ranking, select Bottleneck Ranking in the center section of the home screen or the award ribbons icon from the top left of the screen. This brings you to the Bottleneck Ranking to select your roadways and date range. The default Roads section is the Standard road selection section. To the right of the Florida symbol, type the road you are interested in and press the Enter key or select the search icon to the right of the field. Typing I-10 will give you multiple options. Select the I-10 (69 interchanges) option to select it. Once selected, the road will be highlighted in the map portion of the screen. You can zoom in or out as desired from the map section using the mouse wheel to scroll or the plus/minus signs in the top left corner of the map. Selecting the target site icon re-centers the map on your selection. To report an issue with the road you selected, select Report a problem with this road. This allows you to report an issue to RITIS support. Fill out the Report a problem section and describe the problem in the section provided. Leave the box checked if you want to receive an when the issue has been resolved. Select the Submit button to submit your issue. Select the Cancel button or the X in the upper right corner of the Report a problem window to cancel reporting an issue. You can change the color of the road by selecting the color box to the left of the road name and selecting a new color. Only distinct traffic message channel, or TMC, codes from overlapping sections will be used in calculations and duplicates will be ignored. You can limit your selection to only one direction by unchecking a direction. To limit the selection further, change the radio button from Entire road to Partial Road. This gives you the option to select what intersection markers you want to use for the road. When you change your intersections listed in the drop down menus, the highlighted road section will update on the map as well as the number of miles of roadway selected and the number of TMC codes included. Keep in mind that the number of miles includes both directions of the road when both Eastbound and Westbound are selected. Hovering over the information icon, the blue circle icon with a white lowercase i, will give you additional information about the mileage for a roadway. If you zoom into the highlighted road section and hover over it, you will see individual TMC segments. TMC segments vary in length. A TMC segment may vary in length for the opposite direction of the same portion of a roadway. Selecting a TMC segment allows you to remove it from the selection. There will be a separate TMC segment for each direction. You can repeat removing TMC segments as desired. To add the TMC segment back, select the note to the right of the zoom buttons in the upper left corner of the map. You can select the Add all TMCs back button or individually add them back by highlighting the TMC you want to add by selecting it, then selecting the green circle with the white plus sign. You can
repeat this as desired. You can continue to edit a road even when using other Road tabs by expanding the section by selecting the triangle to the right of the Road Name details. To use the advanced road selection tool, select Advanced on the right side in the Roads box. This allows you to pick the roadway and limit it to specific counties, zip codes, road classes, and directions. Pick the counties of interest, directions, zip codes, and road classes, and type the road name. Then hit enter or select the Search button. If you restrict a roadway to areas where it does not exist, the message No roads found for road name will appear. Once the road is added, you can change the color of the road by selecting the color box to the left of the road name and selecting a new color. To select roads by region, select the Region tab in the Roads box. To select all roads for a county, select the county of interest and select the Add region button in the Roads box. This will add all roads in the county including available arterials within that county. Once a road is added, you can change its color by selecting the color box to the left of the road name and selecting a new color. If you select a region that spans more than one road, you will not be able to use the Congestion Scan tool in conjunction with the Massive Data Downloader. This notice will appear when you hover over a caution icon, the yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it, next to the region in question; for example, Region/Monroe County/ All Roads. Does not follow RITIS. Is there a specific road we can use throughout the course to pull examples from?4/21/16 Per Derek Vollmer DELETE. (Misplaced slide) To select specific TMC codes, select the List of TMC codes tab in the Roads box. Type a TMC Code, that is, HERE data TMC code, such as , not FDOT TMC codes, in the available space. List as many TMC codes as you want separating them with commas. You will get an error message at the bottom of the Roads box noting a TMC code is invalid. This error message will remain until you finish typing the valid TMC code. The same error message will appear if you type more than one TMC code without separating the codes with commas. Leaving the Auto refresh map box checked will refresh the map as you add TMC codes. Having the box checked doesn t add them until you press the Add TMC codes, but it does show their location on the map. Once you have completed the list of TMC codes, select the Add TMC codes button. You can then expand the section to edit the TMC codes by selecting the triangle to the right of the TMC codes added. You can revise the TMC codes as desired and press the OK button. Once the TMC codes are added, you can change their color by selecting the color box to the left of the number of TMC codes and selecting a new color. You can save a set of TMC codes after you have entered several roadways (using Road, Region, List of TMC codes, or a combination of tabs) by selecting the Save at TMC set button in the bottom right corner of your selected roads box. This allows you to give the TMC code set a name for future use. There is no need to enter your name in the TMC code set name since you can sort by your address. You have the ability to keep the TMC code set private or allow others within your agency to use this newly created set. If you need to run queries frequently on complex TMC code sets, this is very useful. Once your information has been entered, select the Save button. If you select the Cancel button or the X in the upper right corner of the TMC set window, it will not save your TMC code set.
Notice that to find a specific TMC code, you could select an entire road, hover over the area of interest, and write down the TMC code you want to use in the List of TMC codes section. This can be helpful if you are only interested in one or two TMC codes on a road and they are not next to each other. Intersections could allow you to narrow a roadway segment, but only for adjacent TMC codes. Removing TMC codes individually from a roadway can be time consuming if you need to remove most of the TMC codes. To view a saved TMC code set, select the Saved TMC Set tab in the Roads box. You can sort by Owner to find your TMC code sets quickly or sort by TMC Set. To sort by Owner, select the Owner column. To sort by TMC code set name, select the TMC Set column. You can filter the TMC Sets shown in the list by selecting Filters. You can check a box to only show your TMC code sets. Additionally, you can filter further by checking the Filter by text box and typing the text you want to filter. Once the correct TMC code set is found, double select it to select it. To rename your TMC code set, hover over the TMC Set name and select the pencil icon; rename as desired and select the Save button. The renaming option allows you to revise the choice for making the TMC code set visible to other users within your agency or only yourself. To delete your TMC code set, hover over the TMC Set name and select the red circle icon with the minus sign. It will confirm deletion of the TMC code set. If you still want to delete the TMC code set, select the Yes button. If you do not want to delete the TMC code set, select the No button or the X in the upper right corner of the confirmation window. It will not allow you to delete or rename someone else s TMC code set. To remove a road, region or TMC codes in the Roads section, select the red X to the left of the Road, Region, or TMC code. Be sure you want to remove it before selecting the red X since you will have to repeat the selection steps to add it back. To hide a selection, such as road, region, or TMC code, select the open eye image next to the road name, region, or TMC code you wish to hide. To unhide a selection, select the closed eye image next to the road name, region, or TMC code you wish to unhide. It may be helpful to hide a selection to see if there are overlaps in your selection. Keep in mind that if you select a roadway multiple times, it will appear in your data set multiple times. To identify a date range, select the calendar icons to select the dates of interest and scroll months and years using the arrows within the calendar. Today is the default selection. The dates selected are inclusive. For example, if you select 07/27/ /31/2015 it will return five days of data. Only a maximum of three months can be selected. Hovering over the information icon, which is the blue circle icon with a white lowercase i, will remind you of the time restriction. After all your selections have been made, select the Submit button. If the Submit button is grayed out instead of blue, you need to make a selection in sections 1-2. A new tab will open showing a Loading icon until the Bottleneck Ranking generates. The list of bottlenecks section displays a list of bottlenecks with associated details. As you zoom in, the list will only include the bottleneck and events in the area you are viewing.
This list can be sorted by Rank, Location, Average Duration, Average Max Length, Occurrences, Impact Factor or Number of Events. The Impact Factor and All Events/Incidents columns are defined by hovering over the information icon, which is the blue circle icon with a white lowercase i. below the list of bottlenecks is the map and occurrences section. To export the list of bottlenecks, select the Save button in the upper right corner of the list. Pick the location on your computer where you want to store the file, rename it with a more descriptive name, and select the Save button. Be sure to use.csv extension if you rename the file. You can easily open the file after it is saved by navigating to its location on your computer. The file contains the same information displayed in the list plus Starting TMC code, Direction, Latitude and Longitude. To save the map screenshot, select the Save button in the upper right corner of the map. Pick the location on your computer where you want to store the file, rename it with a more descriptive name, and select the Save button. Be sure to use a.jpg extension if you rename the file. You can easily open the file after it is saved by navigating to its location on your computer. To save the data associated with the bottleneck currently selected in an Excel file, select the Save button in the upper right corner of the graph section. Pick the location on your computer where you want to store the file, rename it with a more descriptive name, and select the Save button. Be sure to use a.csv extension if you rename the file. You can easily open the file after it is saved by navigating to its location on your computer. The file contains the start time, clear time, duration, max queue length and number of events. To save the graph screenshot, select the Save button in the upper right corner of the graph section. Pick the location on your computer where you want to store the file, rename it with a more descriptive name, and select the Save button. Be sure to use a.jpg extension if you rename the file. You can easily open the file after it is saved by navigating to its location on your computer. To remove or show events displayed on the map, uncheck the box at the top of the map. You will have the option to show events during the selected time range or only during bottleneck conditions by using the radio buttons at the top of the map. You have the option to remove or show bottleneck ranking, highlight selected bottleneck and remove or show events labels next to rank by checking or unchecking boxes at the bottom of the map. The large icon showing on the map represents the bottleneck. The number to the left within the large icon on the map represents the rank of the bottleneck and the number on the right represents the number of events associated with that bottleneck. The graph section can be changed from Line, Spiral and table view by changing the radio button at the top right of the graph section. The maximum queue length can be adjusted by dragging the color scale at the bottom of the graph section. The color can be changed to Grayscale by checking the Grayscale box at the bottom of the graph. Hovering over events in the graph section will provide details on the event. Selecting the event in the graph section will open the Timeline for that event in a new tab. Selecting the bottleneck portion of the graph will open the Congestion scan for the bottleneck in a new tab. When viewing the Spiral graph, the cycle can be changed by using the Cycles drop down menu. The default cycle is day but can be changed to week.
When incidents show on the Bottleneck Ranking map, you can select them to see details and open an incident timeline by selecting the Timeline button. If there are multiple events associated with an icon, you will be able to select the event to review it and have the option to open a Timeline button. To close an incident window, select the X in the upper right corner of the window. Selecting the Timeline button will open a new tab with the incident timeline. This allows you to see details of the incident, including a heat map of speed readings, and details when responders arrive on the scene. Hover over various points to see details corresponding to the event including how many vehicles are involved. You can hide and expand different sections by selecting the triangle next to the section headers. You can switch between the Map and Timeline view by selecting the Map icon in the upper right corner of the page, then the Timeline icon to return to the timeline. You can zoom in or out of the map using the zoom icons in the upper left corner of the map or using the wheel on your mouse. The bullseye on the map represents the location of the incident. If you drag your map or scroll too far off the incident, you can select the bullseye button in the upper left corner to recenter the map on the incident. You can save an image of the timeline from the Map or Timeline view by selecting the picture icon in the upper right corner of the page. Pick the location on your computer where you want to store the file and rename it with a more descriptive name. Be sure to use a.jpg extension if you rename the file. You can easily open the file after it is saved by navigating to its location on your computer. Once you have opened a new timeline tab, you can leave the newly opened tab, go back to the Bottleneck Ranking, and select another event timeline. It will open a new tab for that event. You can repeat this as desired. When the graph section is in table view, selecting the congestion scan icon, which is in the far left column of the table, will open a new tab with the congestion scan for that bottleneck. Once the congestion scan generates, it shows heat maps on both sides of the roadway segment. Each heat map represents a direction of the roadway. The heat maps are grayed out where data is not available. For this reason, maps are gray for time ranges that have yet to occur. Once you have opened a new congestion scan tab, you can leave the newly opened tab, go back to the Bottleneck Rankings, select another bottleneck and generate another congestion scan. It will open a new tab for that bottleneck. You can repeat this as desired. The default time range for the congestion scan is 12am to 12am. You can adjust your Time Range at the top of the page by selecting the am or pm tag, dragging it until you reach the new time, then releasing the tag. You can repeat this as desired. The default data type shown is Speed. The data type options are: Historic Average Congestion, Comparative Speed, Congestion, Speed, Travel Time Index, Buffer Index, and Planning Time Index. You can change the data type by selecting the Data Type drop down menu in the top center of the screen and selecting a different data type. The Color Thresholds at the top of the page will change as you change your Data Type. You can adjust your Color Thresholds by selecting the color tag, dragging it until you reach the new threshold, then
releasing the tag. It is recommended to adjust the leftmost or rightmost threshold first then continue your adjustments in the same direction. If you are unsure of the free flow speed for the roadway, you may not want to adjust the thresholds. However, adjusting thresholds can dramatically display changes in the heat maps. If you want to reset the Color Thresholds back to the default setting, select the reset button, the green circular arrow to the right of Color Thresholds at the top of the screen. To revise the Congestion Scan display, select the Display Options button in the upper right corner. This allows you to change the Graph display mode, show or hide different graphs or heat maps, and change options displayed on your scan. To remove the play bar at the bottom of the screen, check the Hide player box. Zooming options are also available. To use the mouse wheel to zoom in on the time range or road, the appropriate boxes have to be checked in this section. You can add the ability to use advanced road zooming options. When this option is checked, it provides the use of sliders to make a more refined selection on the road segment. To remove traffic events from you map(s), uncheck the Show traffic events box. To close the Display options window, select the Display options button. Hovering over the heat maps, displays tooltip information and changes the shading color of the corresponding road segment. You can select to lock the tooltip in that position by selecting the heat map. The Tooltip provides different information depending on what Data Type is being displayed. While the Tooltip is locked, changing the Data Type will not update the information provided. To remove a Tooltip from the locked position, select the same heat map spot again, select the X in the upper right corner of the tooltip, or select another area on the heat map to lock a different Tooltip. Only one Tooltip can be locked at a time per map. You can clear the locked tooltips by selecting the Clear all tooltip button in the upper right corner of the screen. The icons on the heat maps represent various events. You can hover the event icon to see the details. Selecting the event icon, opens a new tab for the event timeline. This allows you to see details of the event, including a heat map of speed readings, and details when responders arrive on the scene. Hover over various points to see details corresponding to the event, including how many vehicles are involved. You can hide and expand different sections by selecting the triangle next to the section headers. You can switch between the Map and Timeline views by selecting the Map icon in the upper right corner of the page, then the Timeline icon to return to the timeline. You can zoom in or out of the map using the zoom icons at the upper left corner of the map or using the wheel on your mouse. You can easily open the file after saving it by navigating to its location on your computer.
Once you have opened a new timeline tab, you can leave the newly opened tab, go back to the Congestion Scan, and select another event timeline. It will open a new tab for that event. You can repeat this as desired. To access the same information selected for the Congestion Scan in a Trend Map or Performance Charts, select the Switch to button in the upper right corner of the page. Select either Trend Map or Performance Charts after selecting the Switch to button. This opens a new tab for either the Trend Map or Performance Charts depending on your selection. The Trend Map and Performance Charts are covered in another training module. How to open a congestion scan for multiple roadways and multiple time periods is covered later. To send the Congestion Scan to another RITIS user, select the share icon, shown as three black dots connected by lines, in the upper right corner of the page. Select the clipboard icon in the upper right corner of the window. This copies the URL to your clipboard so you can paste it into an . To save the associated data for the Congestion Scan, make sure the Data Type reflects the data of interest, then select the save button in the upper right corner of the screen, select save as Excel file, and select Save as. Pick the location on your computer where you want to store the file, rename it with a more descriptive name, and select the Save button. Be sure to use an.xml extension if you rename the file. You can easily open the file after saving it by navigating to its location on your computer. The file will have a separate tab for each roadway direction. The data included is dependent on the data type when the save button was selected. To save a screenshot of the Congestion Scan, make sure the Data Type reflects the data of interest, then select the save button in the upper right corner of the screen and select save as Screenshot. Pick your Dimensions from the drop down menu and select Save as. Pick the location on your computer where you want to store the file, rename it with a more descriptive name, and select the Save button. Be sure to use a.jpg extension if you rename the file.
