Using Safari on the imac Like most applications, you look to the Dock (near the bottom of the display) to start Safari: The Safari icon looks like a compass. Click it once to start Safari. As with all Mac applications, Safari s menu system is run from the Menu Bar at the top of the screen (separate from the Safari window. Note: where available, the keyboard shortcut for the command is shown on the right side of the menu. (See the Appendix for a list of symbols used.) Safari menu: This is the leftmost menu item (not File ). The third item is Preferences (the keyboard shortcut is +, ) which is comparable to Options in browsers designed for Windows. Here is the first of the Preferences pages: For Homepage, only one page can be selected (some browsers permit multiple tabs). Changes are saved immediately. File menu: The items in this menu are generally self explanatory. New Private Window (second item) is comparable to Internet Explorer s InPrivate Browsing ; Firefox s Private Window ; and Chrome s Incognito Window. 1 *
Edit menu: The items in this menu should be self explanatory for those normally used for web browsing (mostly used for entering text). View menu: The second item is the Customize Toolbar option. When selected, this opens a small window just beneath the tabs (if present), in the center of the browser and highlights the two areas to which you may drag buttons (to add them to the toolbar). In addition to the instructions present, you can also drag an item off the toolbar to remove it. The Favorites Bar, if selected, appears between the toolbar and the tabs (if present). The Sidebar can display Bookmarks or Reading List or Shared Links or Favorites. If Show Sidebar is selected, it will display the content type last used. If a specific Sidebar is selected, it can be selected from this menu. The Status Bar is useful for seeing the true destination of a web page s link (which is not necessarily the text in a link). Choosing Show All Tabs will force a tab to appear when there is but a single page open. When more than one page is open, the tabs always appear. A tab can be closed by using +W or by clicking on the grey on the grey background on the left side of a tab. The Zoom options work as they do in other browsers. 2 *
If a web page is encountered with strange characters (usually because it omitted a character set and/or uses characters incompatible with its character set. If this arises, the menu item Text Encoding can be used to try to find the correct encoding. (The first three after Default are the most likely candidates, unless the page is supposed to be in a language which does not use a Roman alphabet.) Other items in this menu should be self explanatory. History menu: The items here should be self explanatory. If the Home button is not present (by default it is absent from the toolbar) and you cannot remember the keyboard shortcut ( + +H ), this is the only way to go directly to your homepage. Note: the item Reopen Last Closed Window is under the History menu, but the Undo Close Tab is under the Edit menu and is only available until a new tab is opened. Bookmarks menu: This menu includes Show Bookmarks, which is identical to Show Bookmarks Sidebar under the View menu. Edit Bookmarks opens as a tab in Safari, filling the window. Reading List is a quick way to save web pages for later reading when not connected to the Internet. (In addition to the menu and the shortcut displayed to the right, a quick way to save a link to the Reading List without opening it, is to click on the link whilst holding the G key.) The Favorites menu opens a sub menu containing all items saved to Favorites and includes an Open in Tabs item which will open all favorites, one tab per favorite. Windows menu: This is used to switch between tabs. The active tab is displayed at the bottom of the menu. 3 *
Help menu: The Search item here has a space for entering text. It searches menu items and help topics. It does not perform a web search. The remainder of Safari s controls are at the top of the Safari window. On the left are (L to R) the window controls, the back and forward navigation controls, and sidebar control. This closes Safari, but leaves it running in the background (consuming memory) so it can be relaunched more quickly. When closed this way, a small black dot will appear under Safari s icon in the Dock. Pages open at the time are not saved. This minimizes Safari to the Dock, leaving the current page(s) open. A thumbnail of the active page with a small Safari icon will appear between the Downloads and the Trash icons (along with any other minimized applications) on the right side of the Dock. Safari can be restored by clicking on either the Safari icon on the left side of the Dock or on the icon between the Downloads and Trash icons. This maximizes Safari (switches to Full Screen). When maximized, the entire screen is used; both the Dock and the Menu Bar at top are hidden. To exit Full Screen, move the mouse to the top of the screen: after a brief pause (a mouse click will speed things), the Menu Bar and the window controls will appear (but with nothing inside the circles and the yellow control greyed out). Click the green circle to exit Full Screen or the red circle to close Safari. This opens the Sidebar. These are navigation controls: back and forward. The center of the top portion of the Safari window is a combination Address (URI) bar and Search bar. The right section of the top portion of the Safari window contains three buttons. The leftmost is the Share button. When clicked, a choice of ways to share the active web page appear: The next button is the Show all tabs button. When clicked, all open tabs are shown as thumbnails within a larger window. From here, tabs can be closed ( in the upper left corner of thumbnail), new ones opened (click the large plus sign), or switched to (click on thumbnail). 4 *
Appendix The Mac keyboard: The symbols used in the menus and in instruction manuals are = Command = Option / Alt = Control = Shift A typical Safari window, with the Sidebar open to Favorites: 5 August 2017
