1 Macintosh OS X 10.4 Tips Copyright 2005 Oliver Jovanovic Mail Tips Mail ~/Library/Mail stores most mail files and mailboxes ~/Library/Mail/LSMMap file stores junk mail training ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes stores mail (can also drag self created folders from Mail to desktop to create backups) ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist stores mail preferences View > Message > Long Headers to check the origin of suspicious View > Message > Raw Source to check the content and links of suspicious View > Bcc Address Field to send blind carbon copies Mark junk mail as such, and correct mistakes to improve the accuracy of the junk mail filter, then set Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail to Automatic to automatically sort it out Mail with Hotmail Install httpmail for Tiger (available at Quit Mail before installing the plugin Double click the Installer on the mounted disk image to install the plugin Start Mail, Mail > Preferences > Account > + to add a new account Make sure httpmail is selected as the Account Type Enter Hotmail (or something similar) as the Description for this account Enter your first and last name under Full Name Enter your Hotmail address (something like username@hotmail.com ) under Address Make sure the Incoming Mail Server is set to hotmail.com Enter your Hotmail user name ( username, for example) under User Name Type your Hotmail password under Password Mail with Gmail Enable POP for all mail in your Gmail Settings, under Forwarding and POP, and Save Changes Add a new account as above, but with POP Account Type, your account information, and incoming mail server pop.gmail.com Then choose Add Server from Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and enter smtp.gmail.com for the outgoing server, enter 587 for the Server port, check Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and select Password authentication

2 Mail with AOL Add a new account as above, but with IMAP Account Type, your account information, and incoming mail server imap.gmail.com Then choose Add Server from Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and enter smtp.aol.com for the outgoing server, enter 587 for the Server port and select Password authentication Mail with Yahoo Upgrade to Yahoo! Mail Plus (available at for $19.99/year). This allows you to use a POP3 mail client such as Apple Mail to access your Yahoo Mail Use Mail Forward for Mac OS X (available at mailfwd_macx.html for $19.95).This will forward your Yahoo (and also Hotmail, AOL and Gmail) mail to one of your free IMAP or POP accounts Address Book Tips To quickly create groups, select members by Command clicking or Shift clicking then selecting New Group From Selection command in File menu Can bring up maps from the home or work labels Can import from Palm by selecting all contacts, dragging to temporary folder on desktop, then dragging all from folder into Address Book Backup by backing up entire Address Book application (File > Back up Address Book ) Safari Tips Command click on a link to open it in a new window (or tab) Has a tabbed browsing mode which can be activated from Safari > Preferences > Tabs Can select entire URL by clicking on its favorites icon (favicon.ico) Can drag a URL to the Desktop or folder to create an Internet Shortcut Has internal shortcuts.html page inside Safari package (file:///applications/safari.app/contents/resources/shortcuts.html) Command click on the title bar to see all pages visited in the current site Option click on the back or forward arrow to see URLs visited recently Control click (or hold click) on the back or forward arrow to see names of sites visited recently View > Show Status Bar to see URLs (Command Backslash) Command 1 to 9 is links 1 to 9 on Bookmarks Bar Can create a Bookmark Bar folder for web downloads (file:///pathname)

3 Can search bookmarks (click book icon on left of Bookmark Bar, then Command F) Can open all bookmarks in a folder in the Bookmark Bar by Command clicking on it Command clicking on a link in the Bookmark Bar opens it in a new tab behind your current view Can activate a Debug menu in Safari that has many useful options (including letting Safari appear to be Internet Explorer) by typing the following commands in Terminal, which is located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder (first quit Safari): defaults write com.apple.safari IncludeDebugMenu 1 exit To remove the Debug menu, type the following commands in Terminal (after quitting Safari): defaults write com.apple.safari IncludeDebugMenu 0 exit Account and Login System Preferences Tips Accounts Add new accounts by clicking on the +.To permanently delete an account, click on -.Do not delete the Support account or your own (lastname) account. In Password, can change password and Address Book information In Picture, can change picture used for log in, ichat and Address Book In Login Items, can add applications that will start automatically when you log in In Login Options can set account to log in automatically. If you have multiple user accounts on one computer, can use Enable fast user switching Security Can require a password to wake the computer from sleep or once the screen saver kicks in (the timing of which can be controlled from Desktop & Screen Saver) Can set the computer to logout automatically after inactivity, and use secure virtual memory Can enable FileVault to encrypt your entire home directory, and set a master password for the computer. Recommend using Disk Utility to create an encrypted disk image in which to store private files instead Classic Can set to automatically start Classic when you log in (useful if you frequently use one or more Classic applications, e.g. DNA Strider)

4 Navigation Tips Window Navigation In any application, including the Finder, Command H hides the application Command Option H hides all other applications Option Command W or Option click red closes all windows Command click and drag lets you move a window without bringing it forward Command ` cycles between open windows in an application (even the Finder) Folder Navigation Finder Go menus have shortcuts, including Home (Command Shift H) and connect to server (Command K) Command Up (Command Up arrow) takes you to the folder above Spring-loaded folders can be turned on and off and have their delay adjusted in Finder > Preferences Views Icon View shortcut is Command 1. Can adjust size of icons under View > Show View Options List View shortcut is Command 2. Can click a heading to sort by that column, click on arrow to reverse sort order. Column View shortcut is Command 3. Useful for moving files around, particularly with more than one window open Can Shift click to select multiple files in any view Can Command click to discontinuously select multiple files in List or Column View Dock, Toolbar, Sidebar and Menulet Tips Switching Applications in the Dock Command Tab switches to next open application in the dock. A single press of Command Tab takes you to the most previously used application; another single press takes you back to the one you started in, allowing quick back and forth switching.to keep moving, hold down Command and keep Tabbing Command Shift Tab goes to the previous open application in the dock Controlling Applications in the Dock Click and hold to get application options, including Quit and Show in Finder, or hierarchical

5 submenus for a folder or hard drive item Click and hold to Force Quit a stalled application. If this fails, use Command Option Esc To bring all windows of an application forward, select it in the dock. Control click an application to get list of its open windows. Only the selected window comes forward Option click to hide an application (or launch it hidden) Command click to open the application s folder with the application selected Command Option click to hide all other applications (or launch it with all others hidden) Hiding and Customizing the Dock Command Option D in Finder to hide Dock Command drag to drag onto Dock without other icons moving Command Option drag to a Dock icon to force opening with that program To change the Dock, hold the mouse pointer over the separation line in the Dock, when it changes, click and drag to resize the Dock (down smaller, up larger), or hold the Control key and click while holding the pointer over the separation line to get various Dock preferences (can also select Dock from System Preferences) Sidebar Drag commonly or currently used folders (such as Utilities) onto the Sidebar for easy access, drag them off to remove them (this does not delete the folder, just removes it from the Sidebar) Toolbar Select Customize Toolbar from View. Icon only saves space. Can add other useful items Command drag to rearrange or remove icons (drag off to remove) Menulets Double click to add to menu bar Command drag to reorder or remove from menu bar File Tips Saving Files Files with unsaved changes have a small dot in the upper left red circle In Save dialogs, click on triangle to get expanded save view Command D jumps to Desktop, and can use Go menu commands (Command Shift H for Home, etc)

6 Renaming Files Click on filename, not the icon Hit Enter after selecting file Deleting Files Command Delete after selecting a file or files to the trash Can undo (Command Z), but not if you have emptied the trash Click and hold trash to empty, or Command Shift Delete If cannot empty the trash because a file is in use, quit the application that used it first If cannot empty the trash because a file is locked, unlock it via File > Get Info If cannot empty the trash because of a permissions problem, try repairing permissions on that hard drive with Disk Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities/) If all else fails, the file can almost always be deleted at the Unix command line File Aliases Command L creates an alias of the selected item in that folder Command Option drag to create an alias elsewhere Can add a folder or folders with aliases to the dock Internet Shortcuts are aliases to a particular URL, and can be created by dragging the URL to the desktop Printing Tips Add new printers and select default printers in Print Center Any OS X application can print to PDF file format by selecting File > Print and clicking on the PDF button, then selecting Save As PDF... To automatically reduce the size of an image-heavy PDF (i.e. for ) select Compress PDF instead (other useful automated actions can also be selected) Maintenance Tips Repair permissions with Disk Utility once a month Run Software Update manually at least once a month Backup your home directory by burning it to a CD-R at least once a month (insert a blank CD-R, drag the folder onto it, then click on the Burn icon in the Sidebar) Be careful not to eat or drink near the keyboard Keep a soft, thin cloth over your keys to prevent marks on the screen Clean once a month with iklear or a soft dust cloth
