2 Getting Started with SuperNova SuperNova is a magnifier and screen reader; it is especially used for visually impaired people so they can clearly see and hear everything displayed on the screen at the same time. To start SuperNova there should be an icon on the desktop. Or: 1) Go to Start 2) Programs 3) Find Dolphin Double click this icon Press CTRL+SHIFT+S as a shortcut to open SuperNova 4) Click on SuperNova Access Suite Once SuperNova has started you will have a toolbar on the screen which looks like this: Viaual tab Speech tab Braille Tab Enhancements 2
3 Visual Tab Displays the magnifying options Speech Tab Displays the speaking tools Braille Tab Displays the brailing tools (this will not be covered in this guide) Enhancements Tools which enhance text visibility and speech clarity The Visual Toolbar Let s see how the visual tab tools work: Magnifier OFF/ON this determines whether the screen magnification is on or off. Click here to turn the magnifier on or off Magnifier view this gives you different views of the screen, e.g. you could have the screen magnified and the other half as normal, or you could simply have the whole screen magnified. Colour Scheme this tool allows you to apply a colour overlay on the screen, so it can be black text on a white background or inverted colours. Click here to turn on/off the colour scheme. Select the colour scheme you would like to use here 3
4 Highlighting this tool is used for when reading or typing text. It produces a marker or highlights the words so your vision is clearly pointed to that word. Click here to turn on/off the highlighter Mouse Pointers this tool allows to you change the mouse pointer colour and size when it is in different states, e.g. when the loading timer is shown on screen. 1) Firstly click on the Mouse Pointers button 2) A new window will now appear: Select the highlighting style you would like to use here First select the colour scheme of the pointer Now select the state of the mouse pointer 3) Click Apply. Line View Line view makes only the line where the cursor is viewable. To start line view click on the button. Click here to turn on Line View You can only see Line View when the magnification is turned on 4
5 To turn off Line View click the Esc key. Here are a list of commands when in Line View mode: Decrease magnification Increase magnification Next Line Previous Line Move forward Move Backwards LEFT CONTROL + NUMPAD MINUS LEFT CONTROL + NUMPAD PLUS PAGE DOWN PAGE UP RIGHT ARROW KEY LEFT ARROW KEY Document Reader The tool allows you create your own reading environment, where the text, background and highlight can all be set to a value that makes reading comfortable for you. Hooked Areas a hooked area allows you to create your own magnification window anywhere on the screen. To do this: 1) Click on the Hooked Areas button 2) Now in the new window click New 5
6 Click New 3) Now type in a description of the hooked area and click Choose Screen Area to Hook 4) Click OK on the next dialog box 5) Now drag a box with your mouse cursor wherever you want the Hooked Area to be and press Enter. 6) Click Apply to save the hooked area. Saving your SuperNova Settings Once you have set the screen colours, magnification level and mouse pointers to suit your needs you can set SuperNova to automatically start up again with these settings. 1) Go to File 2) Click on Save Settings 6
7 The next time you open SuperNova your settings will be automatically loaded. To restore the settings back to the way they were originally: 1) Go to File 2) Move down to Restore Defaults 3) Click on Global Preferences You can also export your settings; you could save them on a USB stick and load them up on another computer into SuperNova. 1) Go to File 2) Move down to Export 3) Click on User Settings 4) Now just select where you would like to save your user settings To Import your settings, follow the same steps as above but instead of clicking on Export, click on Import. The Speech Toolbar Now let s see how to use the Speech Toolbar 7
8 Voice Off/On Click this button to turn speech on or off Volume this allows you to change the volume of the voice Speed - this determines how fast SuperNova speaks in words per minute; to change this click on the up or down arrow. Click here to change the speed Voice Preferences This allows you to change the voice of the reader and also the language. Character Echoes this tool allows words to be read back to you whilst typing. Clicking on the button will open this window: Click here to have each individual letter read back whilst you type Click here to have each word read back whilst you type Click here to have each words and letters read back whilst you type Text Styles - You can specify settings for punctuation announcement, number announcement and text attribute announcement by selecting options in the Text Style Announcements" dialog box. 8
9 Verbosity - the verbosity is how much information is read out by SuperNova about a program. Each level reads out displayed text but with a different amount of detail. Read From Here this tool does exactly what it says, click anywhere on the screen and then click on the Read from Here button. Enhanced read from here - this tool displays the text being read out running across the top of the screen Press the Escape key to exit Enhanced Read from Here mode. The Magnification tool must be on for Enhanced Read from Here to work Exiting SuperNova 1) Go to File 2) Click on Exit 9
