3 What is LANGUAGE! ereader? LANGUAGE! ereader is a text-to-speech software program designed to assist students as they read the Instructional Text Selections in the LANGUAGE! curriculum. You can use ereader to: Read the LANGUAGE! Instructional Text Selections Have key vocabulary words and definitions read aloud Access the LANGUAGE! glossary Hear text that you highlight Type and save notes about what you are reading ereader has particular applicability for nonreaders and readers with: Learning difficulties including reading, writing, and attention challenges Visual disabilities such as low vision or difficulty with tracking Mobility challenges English as a second language This Quick Start Guide helps you get started with ereader right away. Minimum System Requirements Windows 2000/Me/XP/Vista operating system Adobe Flash Player 7 or higher Adobe Reader or higher A current Web browser for Windows and Mac OS operating systems Sound

4 Starting ereader from CD-ROM ereader may only be run on a single computer; it will not function over a network. Insert the LANGUAGE! ereader CD-ROM for the LANGUAGE! Book you want to view into your CD-ROM drive; the program should run automatically. If the program does not run automatically, double-click the LANGUAGE! ereader icon on your desktop to start the program. Read the enclosed license agreement carefully. If you wish to continue, click Accept Getting Around Toolbar You can access most of the functions you need via the ereader toolbar. Depending on where you are within ereader, some toolbar buttons will be disabled. TOC: Returns you to the Table of Contents page to select a new reading selection. Glossary: Brings up the full listing of LANGUAGE! glossary words and their definitions for this book. Notes: Opens an editable PDF with note-taking framework so you can cut-and-paste text into the document or write your own notes. You may also save the document to your hard drive for later use. Help: Opens this document.

5 Return to Start: Returns the viewer to the beginning of the text selection. Play/Pause: If you click the Pause button, it gets replaced by the Play button. If the users selects Play after pausing the selection, the audio and highlighting will resume in the same location at which they were paused. Stop: Stops the audio and highlighting. When the viewer presses Play, the audio will start over at the beginning of the page. The Forward and Back buttons jump forward or backward one page; the Up and Down buttons jump forward or backward one paragraph. Using the Glossary Some words within the Instructional Text Selections are highlighted, indicating that they are glossary words. Click a highlighted word to see and hear its definition. To return to the main selection, click the X in the upper right-hand corner of the glossary word window. You can also access the entire glossary by clicking the Glossary icon in the toolbar.

6 Creating Notes You can type and save notes in ereader. The notes document is an editable PDF that allows students to type their own text or use the copy and paste function to paste text from another application. To open the notes document, click the Notes button. Type your note into the PDF that appears. To save your note, select File > Save As. In the Save As dialog box, change the file name if desired and browse to the folder in which you wish to save the Notes file. Click Save. If you ve created student folders (see below), you may need to navigate to the appropriate folder before saving. To open a saved note, select File > Open. Select a note in the Open dialog box and click Open. If you ve created student folders (see below), you may need to navigate to the appropriate folder before selecting a note. Creating Notes Folders for Students You can create a personal folder for each student to save notes. Although ereader does not function over a network, if the computer on which you are running the application is connected to a network, you may create a folder there in which students can save their notes. To create personal folders: 1 Browse to the location on your local hard drive or the network drive on which you wish to create the folder. 2 Right-click on the window (Windows users) and select New > Folder or select New > Folder from the File menu. 3 Change the name of the new folder to a student s name. You ll need to show students how to find their folders when saving or opening a note. Printing Notes You may print the notes document as you would any other PDF: Select File > Print... from the File menu.
