ipad for Beginners How to Work the ipad Buttons The On/Off, Sleep/Wake button: This button is on the top of your ipad, and you use it to put your ipad's screen to sleep or wake it up. Home button: No matter what you're doing, you can press the Home button at any time to display the Home screen on your ipad. Application icons: Each icon shown on the touchscreen launches an ipad application. Twenty apps come with your ipad, and you can add more (many are free) by downloading them from the App Store. Volume Up/Down control: The upper part of the button increases the volume; the lower part decreases it. Mute switch: When the switch is set to Silent mode the down position, with an orange dot visible on the switch your ipad doesn't make any sound when you receive new mail or an alert pops up on the screen. Note that the Mute switch doesn't silence what you think of as "expected" sounds, which are sounds you expect to hear in a particular app. Therefore, it doesn't silence the itunes or Videos apps, nor will it mute games and other apps that emit noises. About the only thing the Mute switch mutes are "unexpected" sounds, such as those associated with notifications from apps or the ipad operating system (ios). If the switch doesn't mute your notification sounds when engaged (that is, you can see the little orange dot on the switch), look for a little No Rotation icon to the left of the Battery icon near the top of your screen. If you see this icon when you flick the Mute switch, there are two possible reasons. Reason 1: Your ipad is running an older version (version 3) of ios. Reason 2: Your ipad is running version 4 or higher of ios and you have selected the Lock Rotation option in the Settings app's General pane. Reason 1 occurs because ios 3 treats the switch as a rotation lock, period, with no option for you to use it as a Mute switch. If that's the case, may we suggest you connect your ipad to your computer and use itunes to upgrade your ipad to the current version by clicking the Check for Updates button on the Summary tab and following the instructions for updating your ipad. The current version of ios (6.0) treats it as a Mute switch by default, but you can change it to a Rotation Lock in the Settings app's General pane. Settings> General > About o Connect to WiFi network (ipad only works best when connected to WiFi. NOTE: You may need to sign into the Regis network with your login via Safari before it functions properly) o Airplane mode (to disable all WiFi while on a plane, or when you would like to save battery life and not use internet) o FYI: for parents; you can set up extensive restrictions through settings if you wish to. Sound/volume
o Adjust the alerts volume: Go to Settings > General > Sounds and drag the slider. Or, if Change with Buttons is turned on, use the volume buttons on the side of ipad. Charge the battery: The best way to charge the ipad battery is to connect ipad to a power outlet using the included Dock Connector to USB Cable and 10W USB power adapter. When you connect ipad to a USB 2.0 port on a Mac with the Dock Connector to USB Cable, ipad may charge slowly while syncing. Important: The ipad battery may drain instead of charge if ipad is connected to a PC, to a computer that s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, to a USB hub, or to the USB port on a keyboard. o NOTE: heat will degrade your battery s performance. Don t leave in hot car. o Optimize settings for long battery life: adjust brightness; turn off wifi; use in airplane mode; minimize the use of location services; turn off push notifications; lock ipad when not in use; use auto lock. Set a passcode via settings Gestures How to Master the ipad Multitouch Screen To move around on your Apple ipad, use the multitouch screen. The ipad has no mouse and no physical keyboard or keypad buttons; the multitouch screen displays virtual versions of buttons and controls as required for the tasks at hand. Prep your fingers for the following: Flick a finger on the ipad screen to scroll through music, pictures, s, contacts, and more. Tap against the ipad screen to open applications, play songs, choose photos, and so on. Though it may not look like it, your ipad is a multitasking marvel. While you can have only one app on your screen at a time, you can swipe left or right with four or five fingers to switch between recently used apps. Or double-tap the Home button to see the icons of recently used apps. Pinch and unpinch to enlarge web pages and pictures, or to make them smaller. To pinch or unpinch using multitouch, place your thumb and index finger against the ipad screen. Then keeping the thumb in place, drag your index finger to pinch or unpinch accordingly. Trust the ipad virtual keyboard. It makes suggestions and corrects mistakes on the fly. Tap anywhere in text to select one or more words. Correct errors in a note or by holding your fingers against the ipad screen to bring up a magnifying glass that lets you position the pointer in the precise spot that needs to be edited. Lift your finger when the cursor (a vertical line) is in the proper spot. Customize home screen o Drag apps on top of each other to Make folders o Click and hold any app to go into customization mode and you can move an app to another page if you wish. (click home button to set) Wallpaper background Keyboard options o Did you know you can dictate text instead of typing? To use Dictation, ipad must be connected to the Internet. Turn on Dictation: Go to, Settings > General > Keyboard > Dictation.
App store (because let s face it, it is all about the apps that you will be using) o Do you have an apple ID? Gotta have one before using the App store. Even if it is a free app. ipad user guide (your first free download! A must have) o ibooks app> then download the ios 6 users guide manual You can view the ipad User Guide on ipad in Safari, or you can install the free ibooks app and download the guide from the ibookstore. View the user guide in Safari: In Safari, tap the ipad User Guide bookmark. Or go to help.apple.com/ipad. Add an icon for the user guide to the Home screen: tap to Add to Home Screen. View the user guide in ibooks: If you haven t installed ibooks, open the App Store, then search for and install ibooks. M a i l s e t MAIL: set-up- refer to step by step procedure at the end of this document Multitasking o Dbl click home button o Delete suspended from memory o Updates for apps Safari o o o Bookmarks Add to home screen Searching
Resources: ipad For Dummies, 5th Edition by Edward C. Baig, Bob LeVitus Five Things to Try When Your ipad Acts Up Most of the time, your ipad behaves itself, but every so often it doesn't. Here's a quick review of things you can try if your ipad isn't working the way you expect: 1. Reset your network connection. If you can't connect to websites or Apple's App or other stores, tap the Settings icon on your Home screen, and then tap General Reset Reset Network Settings, which often cures network connectivity issues. 2. Restart your ipad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button, and then slide the red slider to turn it off. Wait a few seconds. Press the Sleep/Wake button to turn on the ipad again. 3. Reset your ipad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button while you press and hold the Home button at the same time. This forces your ipad to restart. Ignore the Slide to Power Off slider when it appears; continue to hold down both buttons until you see the Apple logo in the middle of the screen. 4. Reset ipad settings. Tap the Settings icon on your Home screen, and then tap General Reset Reset All Settings. Resetting ipad settings won't erase your data, but you'll probably have to redo some settings afterwards. 5. Restore your ipad. Connect your ipad to your computer as though you were about to sync. Then select the ipad in the itunes sidebar and click the Restore button on the Summary tab. Restoring your ipad erases all your data and media, and resets all your settings. Because your data and media (except contacts, calendar events, and playlists you've created or modified on your ipad since your last sync) still exist on your computer, you shouldn't lose anything. Your next sync will take longer, and you will have to reset any settings you've changed since you got your ipad. To be safe, right-click your ipad in itunes sidebar (on the left side) and choose Back Up before you click Restore.
Seting up Regis on your ipad Begin by clicking on the Settings icon which is located on your homescreen. Doing so should bring you to this screen: First select the Mail, Contacts and Calendars item from the left hand pane. Next select the Add Account item from the right hand pane. You should now be seeing the screen below. Select the item that is labeled Microsoft Exchange. This action should reveal the screen below.
Enter your address and password in the fields provided. You may enter any text that you wish into the description field. I chose my name but it can be anything. When you are done with this, select the button that is labeled Next. This action should reveal the screen below. Verify that your address is correct. Enter the server name which is .regis.edu (without the quotation marks). Enter regisnet (again without the quotation marks) in the Domain field. Enter your username in the field provided. This is the portion of your address that precedes symbol. When you are finished, touch the button that is labeled Next. This action should reveal the screen below.
Select the items that you would like to synchronize with your Regis and then activate the button that is labeled Save. Congratulations! You are done. Your ipad should start synchronizing with your Regis account. It will generally take several minutes to completely synchronize, but you should start seeing items appear within a short time.
