How to Use Internet Explorer 9 The Basics: 1. The Address Bar is located at the very top of your open webpage. This is where you will type in the address of the website you d like to visit. For example, if you want to get to the Google website, type in (you don t even have to type in the www. part of it) into the address bar and then either click the right arrow or press the Enter key on your keyboard. 2. You will notice that after going to Google (or any website that you ve typed in) the left facing arrow on the left of the address bar is now filled in. The left facing arrow is called the Back button and the right facing arrow is called the Forward button. Use these buttons if you need to go back or forward to a previous webpage that you ve visited. 3. To refresh a page click the circular arrow located within the address bar. This will refresh the webpage you are currently on. This is useful if the page hasn t loaded properly or if you want to see if any new information has been added to it since you ve opened it. 4. If you ever want to return to your set home page either press the Alt and Home keys on your keyboard or click the Home button located in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. (Either by the Star icon or if you have the Command Bar visible you can click it there)
5. If your Menu bar is hidden and you want to show it temporarily, then press the Alt key on your keyboard. Press the Alt key again to hide it. Another way to make the Menu bar appear permanently as well as the other important toolbars such as Favourites and Command, is to right-click anywhere above the address bar. From within the menu that appears click beside each bar you want displayed so that there is a check mark beside them. Menu Bar: Contains the File, Edit, View, Favourites, Tools, and Help options. Favourites Bar: When you save favourite pages you can choose to have them appear on the Favourites Bar. This is handy if you have web pages that you visit very frequently as you can have one click access to them from any webpage. Command Bar: Contains frequently used options such as the Home, Print, and Page buttons. Using Tabs: 1. If you d like to have multiple web pages open at one time so you can navigate between them, click the darkened square that is next to the tab that you currently have open. Or you can press the Ctrl and T keys on your keyboard.
2. As you can see, I have three tabs open and I can still continue to open more if desired. If you ever want to close a tab, hover your mouse over the tab so an X appears beside it (the X will already be visible if you currently have that tab open) and then click it. The tab will now close. **If you have numerous tabs open and you click the red X button in the top right-hand corner of the address bar you will be asked if you d like to close all tabs or just the current one you re in. Printing web pages: There are a number of ways to print web pages. 1. If you want to print the entire content of a web page then you can either click the Print button from within the Menu bar (under the File option) or the Command bar, or you can press the Ctrl and P keys on your keyboard. 2. This will bring up the print menu where you can then proceed to change any settings you want and then click the Print button to print. If you only want parts of a web page you can click and drag over the text/pictures you want and then use one of the above methods to proceed to the print menu. Then from within the Print menu make sure you check off the box beside Selection under the heading Print Range.
3. Lastly, some web documents need to be printed from within the website that is hosting the documents. For example, within an website such as Outlook/Gmail you will want to click the Print button that is within that webpage (usually visible right above the document) so you won t get all of the clutter that would show up on the sides of the document if you printed it through your web browser. Saving Web Pages: If you d like to save a web page onto your computer so you can view it later even without an Internet connection, click the File button located on the Menu bar. From within the menu that appears click Save As. Give your webpage a file name, select where you d like to save it, and then click the Save button. Your webpage will now be saved on your computer for you to view whenever you d like. Bookmarking Pages: 1. If you want to bookmark certain web pages so you can access them easier in the future, make sure you are on the web page you want and then either press the Ctrl and D keys on your keyboard or click the Star icon located in the upper right-hand corner and then click the Add to Favourites button. 2. You can choose to either add the web page to your Favourites List or to your Favourites Bar. As mentioned before the Favourites Bar will display your favourite web pages underneath the address bar.
3. If you save them in your Favourites list you can access them anytime by either pressing the Alt and C keys on your keyboard or by clicking the Star icon and then clicking the Favourites tab. History: Also within the Star icon you can view your web browsing history. Click on the Star icon and then click the History tab or press the Ctrl and H keys on your keyboard. You can then choose how you want your history to be displayed. Other Options: 1. To access a variety of other options either press the Alt and X keys on your keyboard or click the Gear icon located in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. From here you can choose the Print or File option as well as
the Zoom option (use this to make text bigger or smaller). There are a variety of other buttons available here but one of the most important ones is Internet Options. 2. When you click the Internet Options button you are provided with the Internet Options window. From here you can change your general, security, privacy, content, connections, programs, and advanced options. These can include changing your homepage, clearing your browser history, altering your cookies, adjusting your font, and so on. Click the OK button whenever you are done changing your settings within this menu.
