Chapter 6 Defining Test Plans 29 CHAPTER 6 DEFINING TEST PLANS 6.1 Overview Use test plans to run automated tests on your channels. The Test Plan specifies the channels to be tested, their nominal levels, the tests to perform, and the limits to apply. There are nine pre-defined test plans available for your use. You can edit these pre-defined test plans as needed for your own system. 6.2 Defining Your Test Plan To view the list of pre-defined test plans, in the System File Sections middle panel, click the Auto Test Plans folder. The list of pre-defined test plans appears in the right panel. Each test plan contains three sections: Test Plan Channel Selection Use to designate specific tests for a channel and to include the channel in your test group. Also use to add-on individual tests along with your test group. Limits & Test Group Test Scheduling Use to assign limits for your tests and to include tests in your test group. Use upon a future release of ReVeal System Editor to schedule a test to be executed on a specific date. Each of these test plans are defined with default settings. You can create a new test plan or edit one of the existing pre-defined test plans. When you select a test for a channel, it will automatically execute that test when the device runs the test plan Test Plan Channel Selection Below are the common options used to designate tests for a channel and test group. Option Test Group Description Select this checkbox to add the list of additional tests available in the Limits and Tests Group section. You can select the Test Group on a per channel basis.

30 Chapter 6 Defining Test Plans Option HUM CCN CSO CTB FREQ ICFR DOM MER Pre-BER Post-BER Description Tests the HUM modulation. If the hum measurement is the same on both analog and digital signals, the distribution network may be the cause. However, if it occurs only on a digital channel, the modulator/up-converter may be the source of the problem. Tests the Carrier to Composite Noise Ratio (also known as Carrier to Noise Ratio). This test determines the available dynamic range in which the cable modem or set-top box will be operating. Tests the Composite Second Order distortion level. Typically, the CSO beats fall on either side of the video carrier. Since this level varies considerably over time, the distortion sometimes cannot be distinguished from noise. Therefore, it is recommended to keep this level 50dB below the digital signal. Tests the Composite Triple Beat distortion level. Typically, the CTB beat falls directly under the video carrier. Since this level varies considerably over time, the distortion sometimes cannot be distinguished from noise. Therefore, it is recommended to keep this level 50dB below the digital signal. Tests the Frequency Response. Tests In-Channel Frequency Response. Tests the Depth of Modulation of the channel being tested. Tests the Modulation Error Ratio, which is the figure of merit measurement of a QAM channel to determine digital signal quality. Tests the Bit Error Rate Pre-Forward error correction, so that a safe, operational rate can be maintained. Tests the Bit Error Rate Post-Forward error correction, so that a safe, operational rate can be maintained Limits & Test Groups Below are the most common tests available in the Test Group section. For limits, there are generally Min and Max values associated with each measurement and a tolerance limit for measuring a marginal result. The tolerance is a margin inside the

Chapter 6 Defining Test Plans 31 acceptable limit (passing) that will give a warning when test results are passing, but are Marginal because they are within the tolerance value of the limit. For instance, if the Carrier Level limit is set to a minimum of +0 dbmv and the maximum is set to dbmv with a tolerance of 2.0 db, measurements of 0.0 to 15.0 will pass. Measurements less than 0 dbmv and greater than 15.0 dbmv will fail. Measurements between 0 to +2.0 dbmv and to dbmv will be marginal (and passing). Tab Option Description Analog Video Level Analog Video Carrier level test. This is the peak measurement of the video Carrier. V/A Ratio V/A 2 Ratio Adj CH Ratio Tilt Peak/Valley Difference in level between the Video and primary Audio Carriers. Difference in level between the Video and secondary Audio Carriers. Level difference between the Video level of the current channel under test and the adjacent channel to the right. The Analog Tilt value is measured either between the user-selected markers or between the preassigned pilots. You choose this option when viewing the Scan test result. The Peak-to-Valley reading is the difference between the highest and lowest Analog Carrier Levels between the markers. Digital Carrier Level Digital Carrier level test. This is the average measurement across the channels associated bandwidth.

32 Chapter 6 Defining Test Plans Tab Option Pre BER 64 Pos BER 64 MER 64 Pre BER 256 Pos BER 256 MER 256 Tilt Peak_To_Valley Description Limits for the 64-Bit Error Rate Pre-Forward error correction. Limits for the 64-Bit Error Rate Post-Forward error correction. Limits for the 64-bit Modulation Error Ratio to determine digital signal quality. Limits for the 256-Bit Error Rate Pre-Forward error correction. Limits for the 256-Bit Error Rate Post-Forward error correction. Limits for the 256-bit Modulation Error Ratio to determine digital signal quality. The Digital Tilt value is measured either between the user-selected markers or between the preassigned pilots. You choose this option when viewing the Scan test result. This is the Max/Min value between the markers or pilots.

Chapter 6 Defining Test Plans 33 Tab Option Description Cable Modem Test Length Rx Level Tx Level DS Throughput US Throughput MER Pre Fec BER Post Fec BER The Test Length specifies the amount of time during which the PreFEC BER and PostFEC BER measurements will be made. The range of programmable times is 1 to 30 seconds. Shorter test length times result in quicker SMART tests but smaller samples of the data. Longer test length times result in longer SMART test times, but more accurate measurements since a larger sample of data is taken. Modem Receive Level Modem Transmit Level Downstream Throughput Speed Upstream Throughput Speed Modulation Error Ratio to determine Modem signal quality. Bit Error Rate Pre-Forward error correction. Bit Error Rate Post-Forward error correction.

34 Chapter 6 Defining Test Plans Tab BKER Option Test Length Description Block Error Rate. This indicates the relative BER performance in the return direction. BKER (Block Error Rate) is calculated by dividing the number of packets transmitted by the instrument by the number of lost packets (not returned by the CMTS to the instrument). Expect the BKER to be in the range of 0 to 1E-6. Specifies the amount of time during which the Pre- FEC BER and Post-FEC BER measurements will be made. The range of programmable times is 1 to 30 seconds. Shorter test length times result in quicker SMART tests but smaller samples of the data. Longer test length times result in longer SMART test times, but more accurate measurements since a larger sample of data is taken. Since cable modem service is more susceptible to interruption and there is only one cable modem downstream channel to test, you may want to run the test length at 5 or even 10 seconds to get a better sample.

Chapter 6 Defining Test Plans 35 Tab Option Description VoIP Latency The total delay through the network, representing the time elapsed between the time a person starts talking (or any timed event) and the person on the other end of the conversation hears the beginning (or any timed event) of the conversation. Latency is perceivable at approximately 80 msec and becomes objectionable at approximately 200 msec. Jitter Lost Packets The peak variation in the delay through the network. Jitter is managed by buffering the voice data before playback. Naturally, this increases the overall delay (latency). If the jitter exceeds the capacity of the jitter buffer (typically 50 msec), or the jitter buffer plus latency delay exceeds approximately 80 msec, the jitter becomes perceivable. If the total exceeds 200 msec, it becomes objectionable. Displays a count of the lost packets (not returned from the Ping IP address). Lost Packets is the count of the upstream transmitted packets that are not returned. One percent or 1 in 100 (1.0 E-2) lost packets will generate perceivable impairments in a telephony call. Three percent or 3 in 100 (3.0 E-2) lost packets may cause the call to be dropped. % Lost Packets Percentage of lost packets.
