Making Selections Photoshop Chapter C
Compositing Combining images from different sources To do this, user must know how to select parts of the varying images
Selecting Methods Freeform tools Create own unique selections 1. Lasso Tool 2. Polygonal Lasso Tool 3. Magnetic Lasso Tool Fixed area tools Create circular or rectangular selections 1. Rectangular Marquee 2. Elliptical Marquee 3. Single Row Marquee 4. Single Column Marquee Wand tool Make selections using colors Menu Command Increases and decrease selections made
Which tool to use? Practice!! Practice!! Practice Evaluate the images Are their edges that can be traced to isolate the image? Is their a color that can isolate an object?
What do I do with the selection? Cut Copy Paste Drag and drop
Select Using Shapes Click the appropriate tool on the toolbox Rectangular, circular? Drag the pointer around the object A marquee (dotted lines) define the area selected Look at page Photoshop C-5 and discuss the various selection tools
Fastening Points Fastening point is an anchor within a marquee (dotted lines defining selection looks like marching ants) When the dotted line returns to the initial fastening point made, a small circle appears on the pointer indicating that you are at the starting point Click the pointer and the marquee closes
Deselecting or Reselecting Selection stays selected until you unselect or deselect To deselect: menu bar/select/deselect To reselect: menu bar/select/reselect To select all: menu bar/select/select all Ctrl D=deselect Ctrl Z=stops selection process
Using Guides Non-printable horizontal and vertical lies Display on image to allow user to position selection Unlimited number of guides can be created To display guides: Display rulers Position pointer on either ruler Click and drag the guide to the desired position Snap feature enables the object to snap to the guide Turn on snap feature by clicking menu/view/snap and click and drag the guide to the location Delete guide by clicking and dragging back to the ruler Do pages C-7 to C-11
Modifying a Marquee Add to selection button Draw an additional marquee (directly next to the current selection) It is added to the current marquee Menu bar/select/grow Selects pixels adjacent to marquee
Modify Marquee Modify by: Expanding (menu/modify/expand) Contracting (menu/modify/contract) Smoothing edges (menu/modify/smooth) Enlarging Adding border (menu/modify/border) Look at page Photoshop C-13 Do pp C-14-c-15
Select Using Color When to use color for selection? When there is a high contrast between colors How to make color selections? Menu/color range or Magic Wand
Magic Wand Four options when using magic wand: Tolerance (how similar the pixels are to those originally selected; value 0 to 255; lower the value the closer in color the selected pixels will be. Anti-aliased Softens selection appearance Contiguous Select pixels next to one another Use All Layers Select pixels from multiple layers at once
Color Range Use a dialog box which lets you use the pointer to identify which colors you want to use to make a selection Can also use invert check box to exclude a chosen color from selection Fuzziness is similar to tolerance: the lower the setting the closer in color pixels must be to be selected
Transforming a Selection Chages size and other qualities Edit/transform/ Scale, rotate, skew, perspective After selecting transform little squares called handles appear around selection Drag the handle until image has the look you want Can use transfer submenu to flip a selection horizontally or vertically
So to change size of selection Select the object (magic wand, rectangular marquee, etc.) Go to edit/transform/scale or Ctrl T Select the handles Resize
Healing Brush Fix dirt, scratches, bulging veins, wrinkles, pimples First sample an area by pressing the alt key, then left clicking and drag the pointer over the area to be duplicated this samples the area Then paint over the imperfections which matches the sample pixels to the damaged area Healing brush matches texture, lighting, shading Corrections can be made with broad strokes or short clicks of mouse Pp C18-C21
Vignette Effect A picture or portrait whose border fades into the surrounding color at the edges Gives image old world appearance Tones down overwhelming background How to do it? Create a mask with a blurred edge Mask allows to modify a particular area Mask is created with a marquee
Creating a Vignette Uses feathering to fade a marquee shape Feather setting blurs the area between the selection and the surrounding pixels Creates a distinctive fade at the edge of a selection Use marquee or lasso tool Create a marquee Modify feather setting (try setting of 10-20) Pp C23
