1 Development Authority of the North Country (DANC) Internet Mapping Application Instructions Public Viewer 1. Purpose The purpose of this document is to outline basic functionality of the DANC Internet Mapping Application (IMA). The IMA is a web-based geographic information system (GIS) that is hosted by DANC for the benefit of the public and its various customers. The IMA is accessible via an internet browser at 2. Logging-in To log into the Public IMA, follow these steps: Open Internet Explorer and navigate to Click on the Public button Choose your Area of Interest: Entire Region or click the down arrow to choose a specific area Click on the Enter button Click on ENTER 3. Navigation When the map first opens, a Metadata Information window will be open. This window will tell you when the map data was last updated. Hit Close to remove the Metadata Information window. To move about the map: left-click with your mouse and drag while holding the mouse button down, then release the button. To zoom-in or out: left-click with your mouse on the triangle located on the zoom bar. The zoom bar is located on the map tools window (if this window is not displayed, click on the blue Tools button on Page 1 of 11

2 the upper right-hand corner of the screen). Hold the mouse button down and drag the triangle to the right to zoom in and the left to zoom out. If your mouse has a center wheel, zooming in and out can be done by moving the mouse wheel. Zoom in or out by clicking on and dragging the triangle to the left or right. Alternatively use your mouse wheel (if equipped). 4. Displaying Legend The legend contains all of the layers in the IMA. To view the legend, click on the Map Layers button on the Map Tools window (if this window is not displayed, click on the blue Tools button on the upper right-hand corner of the screen). To Display Legend: 1. Click Map Layers Button 2. Click on the word Legend 3. View entire legend by dragging the scroll bar up/down. 5. Turning Layers On/Off It is possible to turn layers on or off in the IMA. Each item displayed in the legend has a corresponding layer. To turn layers on/off, click on the Map Layers button in the on the Map Tools window. Page 2 of 11

3 To turn layers on/off : 1. Click Map Layers Button 2. Click on the word Layers 3. Layers are turned on when a check is displayed in the layer s corresponding box. To turn a layer on/off, click on the check box with your mouse. 6. Printing Maps 4. Layers can be grouped. Triangles represent layer groups. To display all layers within the group, click on the triangle. To print a map (note this function only prints to an Adobe PDF format): Pan to the area of the map you want to print Zoom in/out to the desired extent Turn on/off the layers you want displayed/don t want displayed. Click on the Print Map button on the Map Tools window To Print a Map: 1. Click Print Map Button 2. Enter a title, choose size, click on legend items if you want a legend (optional) 3. (Optional) to add legend items, check the box next to the items you want. Click OK to return to print map window. Page 3 of 11

4 4. Click Print Button 5. Choose where you want to save the map and ADD THE.PDF EXTENSION ON TO THE END OF YOUR MAP NAME. In this example, the map would be saved as MAP_TITLE.PDF These steps will save a PDF of your map to your computer. To open the map, navigate to the saved document and open in Adobe Reader. If you don t have Adobe Reader, you can download for free from 7. Select Queries and Exporting Results Select Queries allows you to search the map for layers with certain specifications; for example, searching all of the hydrants with the same manufacturer. Exporting allows you to convert the results of the query into a Microsoft Excel-readable format. To perform a query, make sure the Select window is displayed. If it is not, click on the blue Select button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. To perform a select query: 1. Click on the layer drop-down to select the layer. 2. Click on the Search Field drop-down to select the search field. 3. Type in the value. To get a pre-populated list, click in the search value field box and click space on your keyboard, then click the backspace button. Choose from the pre-populated list by clicking on the value you want. Page 4 of 11

5 The results of the query are displayed in the results window at the bottom of the screen. Double-clicking on each row of the results window will pan and zoom the map to the corresponding result. In the example above, the map will zoom to the hydrant that corresponds to the yellow row; this is a Mueller Centurion hydrant with a 2-port configuration, which was installed in To export results to Excel-format: 1. Click on the Export to Excel button on the results window. 2. Choose where you want to save the map and ADD THE.CSV EXTENSION ON TO THE END OF THE DOCUMENT S NAME. In this example, the results would be saved as resutls.csv 8. Go To Tools The Go to tool allows you to quickly and easily zoom to a certain location on the map by entering an address, road intersection, or by choosing a preset common location. Page 5 of 11

6 Make sure the Go To window is displayed. If it is not, click on the blue Go To button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. 1. To find a certain address, click on the blue address bar and fill in the information. Click on find. 2. To find an intersection, click on the blue intersection bar and fill in the information. 3. To find a common location, click on the blue common locations bar and choose the location you want to see. Click on the down arrow to see the preset common locations. 9. Drawing The Drawing Tools allows you to draw or write notes on the map, and then save the drawing to your computer. You can also calculate measurements on the map. Make sure the Drawing Tools window is displayed. If it is not, click on the blue Draw button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Click on the type of drawing you would like to make: point, line, polygon, circle, text, etc. Page 6 of 11

7 Example: I chose to draw a circle to indicate an area where a possible water line break occurred. Click on the circle button and use the options to customize the circle s appearance. I made the circle red with transparent diagonal hash marks. After choosing how you want to the circle to look, use your mouse to draw the circle on the map. I added text by clicking on the text button. You can customize the text. Use your mouse to click on the map where you want the text. To save the drawing, click on the save icon in the Drawing Tools window. Page 7 of 11

8 Choose where you want to save the drawing and ADD THE.TXT EXTENSION ON TO THE END OF THE GRAPHIC S NAME. In this example, the results would be saved as break.txt If you have a previously saved drawing that you would like to add to the map, click on the folder icon to navigate to where the graphic is saved. To measure distance or area, click on the Measurements tab in the Drawing Tools window. If you want to measure distance, click on one of the line drawing buttons. If you want to measure area, click on one of the polygon buttons. Choose your units from the options here. Use your mouse to click on the map where you would like to measure. The distance or area will show in the lower left corner of the Drawing Tools window. Page 8 of 11

9 If you want to delete your drawings or measurement, click on the Clear Drawing icon If you only want to delete the most recent drawing, click on the Undo icon 10. Elevation Tools The Elevation Tool allows you to create an elevation profile of the area of your choosing. Make sure the Elevation Tools window is displayed. If it is not, click on the blue Elev. button in the upper righthand corner of the screen. Click on the straight line or free hand line button. Use your mouse to draw a line over the area you want to see an elevation profile for. Double click to end the line and see the profile. The elevation profile will pop up on the screen. The elevation profile is interactive. You can move your mouse pointer along the elevation line in the profile to see the elevation displayed. Page 9 of 11

10 If you want to save the image of the Elevation Profile, you can use the print screen function on your computer s keyboard, or the snipping tool if your computer is equipped, to save the image as a graphic that you can or place in a document. 11. Measure Tool The Measure Tool allows you to measure distance or area, and allows you to find the coordinates of a location. Make sure the Measure Tools window is displayed. If it is not, click on the blue Measure bar in the Map Tools window in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. You can choose to measure Distance, Area, or find the coordinates of a Location. To measure the distance between two or more points on the map, select the Distance tab. Select the Units you want to measure the distance in. You can also choose to measure straight lines, or draw a free-hand line. To use the straight line tool, click the mouse on the first location on the map, and then click on the next location. Double click on the last location to end the line. The distance will be displayed on the window s lower left corner. To use the free hand line tool, hold the mouse button down as you draw the line. 11 To measure area, select the Area tab. Select the units and the how you would like to draw the area polygon: straight line polygon or free-hand polygon. Click the mouse to draw the polygon to fit the area you want to measure. Click the mouse to draw the polygon, double click to end it. To find the geographic coordinates of a location, select the Location tab. Click on the locater button, and then click on the point on the map you want coordinates for.
