1 KIN 147 Lab 02: Acceleration Data Analysis Excel analyses work much better on PCs than on Macs (especially older Macs) Your goal is to correctly analyze accelerometer data Analyzing the Acceleration Data o Open the Microsoft Excel file called KIN 147 Acceleration Data Analysis Template Under the File dropdown menu, select the Save As command Rename your file as follows: Your Name KIN 147 Lab 02 Acceleration Data Analysis Jump Type (SJNAS, SJAS, CMJNAS, or CMJAS) Click on the Save button o You will be analyzing the participant s acceleration files. Click on the Dropbox link to the KIN147 Student Data sent by to you from Dr. Kao (suggestion: bookmark this link for use on future labs) Click on folder for this lab Click on Accelerometer Data folder Click on your group s folder Click on the first file with the participant s name on it The file should open online In upper right corner of the screen, you will see a blue Download dropdown menu Click on the dropdown arrow Select direct download The file should open Save the file to a new folder on your desktop Repeat these steps for the participant s remaining three jumps o Open Microsoft Excel Click on the File menu In the dropdown list, click on Open In the Open dialog box, navigate to the new folder you created on your desktop Make sure you are displaying All Files Double-click on the.txt file you want to analyze The Text Import Wizard will open Click on the Next button Click on the checkbox next to the word Comma Click on the Finish button Select cell A6 For PC users, simultaneously hold down the shift key AND the Ctrl key and press the key. For Mac users, simultaneously hold down the shift key AND the Command key and press the key. Hold down the Ctrl key and type the letter c 1
2 o Select the window on your desktop showing the Excel file Your Name KIN 147 Lab 02 Acceleration Data Analysis Jump Type (SJNAS, SJAS, CMJNAS, or CMJAS) o Select the tab at the bottom of the worksheet labeled Digital Filtering fc=10 Select cell G4 Hold down the Ctrl key and type the letter v For PC users, hold down the Ctrl key and press the key. For Mac users, hold down the Command key and press the key. Press the key 2 times Hold down the shift key and Press the key 3 times For PC users, simultaneously hold down the shift key AND the Ctrl key and press the key. For Mac users, simultaneously hold down the shift key AND the Command key and press the key. Hold the down the Ctrl key press the D key. Select cell F4 Type in the value 0 Press the enter key Select cell G5 o For PC users, hold down the Ctrl key and press the key. For Mac users, hold down the Command key and press the key. o Press the key 1 time o For PC users, simultaneously hold down the shift key AND the Ctrl key and press the key. For Mac users, simultaneously hold down the shift key AND the Command key and press the key. Under the Home tab, click on the word Fill o Select the word Series o In the box next to the word Step Value, type in o Click on the OK button o Creating Charts Of The Participant s Data Ax Acceleration Data Select cells K4 and L4 o For PC users, simultaneously hold down the shift key AND the Ctrl key and press the key. For Mac users, simultaneously hold down the shift key AND the Command key and press the key. o For PC users, select the Insert tab. Click on the Insert Scatter (X,Y) or Bubble Chart icon. Select Scatter with Smooth Lines. o For Mac users, select the green Charts tab in the toolbar. Click on the Scatter icon. A drop down menu will appear. Select Smooth Line Scatter. Trim the vertical axis Exam the participant s Ax acceleration data Identify the maximum acceleration value 2
3 o Move the mouse pointer above the data shown on the chart to the greatest acceleration value. A pop up window will open with 2 numbers in-between parentheses. The first of the numbers is the horizontal axis value (in this case, time). The second number is the vertical axis value (in this case, acceleration) o Write down the acceleration value o Round this number to the next higher integer value. o For example The participant s maximum acceleration was g Round this number to the next higher integer of value of 8g Identify the minimum acceleration value o Move the mouse pointer above the data shown on the chart to the minimum acceleration value. A pop up window will open with 2 numbers in-between parentheses. The first of the numbers is the horizontal axis value (in this case, time). The second number is the vertical axis value (in this case, acceleration) o Write down the acceleration value o Round this number to the next lower integer value. o For example The participant s minimum acceleration was g Rounding this number to the next lowest integer value of -2g Move the mouse pointer over the vertical axis of the participant s graph until a test box appears with the following words: Vertical (Value) Axis Perform a right mouse click On the menu that appears, select Format Axis In the window that appears, o Type in the maximum integer acceleration value you calculated above (e.g. 8) in the box labeled maximum o Type in the minimum integer acceleration value you calculated above (e.g., -2) in the box labeled minimum Find the following words Horizontal axis crosses o Select Axis value o Type in the participant s minimum integer acceleration value (e.g., -2) Trim the horizontal axis Examine the participant s Ax acceleration data Find the time when the participant started to squat (e.g., ) o Round this number down to the nearest whole number (e.g. 10) Find the time the participant stood up (e.g., ) o Round this number up to the nearest whole number (13) Move the mouse pointer over the horizontal axis of each graph until a text box appears with the following words: Horizontal (Value) Axis Perform a right mouse click 3
4 On the menu that appears, select Format Axis In the window that appears, type in the time when the participant started the squat (e.g., 10) in the box labeled minimum and type in the time the participant stood up (e.g., 13) in the box labeled maximum o If you have selected the correct values for trimming the horizontal axis, the jump acceleration data will be in the center of the graph Remove the legend Select the (Series 1) Label in the legend Hit the Delete key Add appropriate chart title and axis labels Select the Ax Acceleration Chart (PC users, follow the instructions below) o Select the Design toolbar underneath the words Chart Tools o Click on the Add Chart Element drop down menu o Place mouse pointer over the words Axis Titles Click on Primary Vertical o Highlight the label Axis Title to the left of the vertical axis Type in the following: Acceleration (g) o Click on the Add Chart Element drop down menu o Place mouse pointer over the words Axis Titles Click on Primary Horizontal o Highlight the label Axis Title underneath the horizontal axis Type in the following: Time (seconds) o Highlight the label Chart Title at the top of the chart Type in the following: Lab 02 Jump Type (SJNAS, SJAS, CMJNAS, or CMJAS)Acceleration Data Analysis Ax Filtered (fc=10) o Repeat for the Participant s remaining jumps Select the Ax Acceleration Chart (Mac users, follow the instructions below) o Select the purple Chart Layout tab next to the green Charts tab o Click on the icon that says Axis Titles o A drop down menu will appear, select Vertical Axis Title Select on Rotated Title o Highlight the label Axis Title to the left of the vertical axis Type in the following: Acceleration (g) o Click on the icon that says Axis Titles o A drop down menu will appear, select Horizontal Axis Title Select on Title Below Axis o Highlight the label Axis Title underneath the horizontal axis Type in the following: Time (seconds) o Click on the icon that says Chart Titles o A drop down menu will appear, select Title Above Chart o Highlight the label Chart Title at the top of the chart 4
